Chapter 9: The Truth They Buried

Officer Brooks stood beneath the flickering emergency lights like he owned the building.

Maybe he did.

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

The man who had comforted Maya.

The man who had promised to protect her.

The man who had stood in my diner and acted like he was on our side.

He had been the enemy all along.

Maya pressed herself against me.

Her small hand gripped my jacket.

Olivia stepped in front of her.

A protective instinct.

A motherly instinct.

Even though Maya wasn’t her child.

That told me everything.

She had spent twelve years protecting people.

Not herself.

Brooks smiled.

“You all look disappointed.””

Ethan’s expression was cold.

“Daniel, get Olivia and Maya out.””

Brooks laughed.

“You still think you’re in control.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You’re finished.””

Brooks tilted his head.

“Am I?””

He opened the folder in his hand.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

He pulled out one page and held it up.

“Do you know what people don’t understand about secrets?””

Nobody answered.

“They think secrets survive because people are powerful.””

He smiled.

“Wrong.””

He looked at me.

“Secrets survive because people are afraid of what happens when they learn the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What did you do?””

Brooks looked almost offended.

“Me?””

He laughed softly.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Olivia’s face hardened.

“You destroyed lives.””

Brooks looked at her.

“Careful.””

That single word made Maya flinch.

I noticed.

So did Olivia.

Brooks continued.

“You disappeared twelve years ago because you couldn’t accept reality.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No.””

“You thought exposing us would fix everything.””

“You hurt people.””

“We protected order.””

The words made my stomach turn.

“Order?””

Brooks looked at me.

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea how fragile this town was.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re talking about protecting a town?””

“I’m talking about protecting thousands of lives.””

“By destroying innocent ones?””

Brooks smiled.

“That’s the part people never understand.””

He pointed toward the files.

“Every system requires sacrifices.””

Silence.

The kind of silence that comes when someone finally reveals exactly who they are.

Not a mistake.

Not a misunderstanding.

A choice.

I looked at Ethan.

“Who is he?””

Ethan answered quietly.

“The person who controlled everything.””

Brooks smiled.

“Ethan always had a dramatic way of explaining things.””

“You used me.””

Ethan’s voice was different.

Angrier.

Brooks looked at him.

“I used everyone.””

That admission hit harder than any denial.

Emily stepped closer.

“Why?””

Brooks looked at her.

“You still don’t understand?””

“No.””

“You all think this was about money.””

He shook his head.

“It was never about money.””

“Then what?””

Brooks looked at Olivia.

“Control.””

The word hung in the air.

“She found records she wasn’t supposed to find.””

Olivia stared.

“You mean evidence.””

“No.””

Brooks smiled.

“I mean power.””

He walked toward the table and placed the folder down.

“People like Olivia always believe the truth automatically wins.””

He looked at me.

“But it doesn’t.””

My hands tightened.

“You kidnapped Maya.””

“No.””

He glanced at the girl.

“I rescued her.””

Maya immediately shook her head.

Her hands moved.

Fast.

Angry.

I watched her signs.

You lied.

Brooks looked at her.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Those words made my blood boil.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s a witness.””

The same word.

Again.

Like Maya wasn’t a person.

Like she was just evidence.

I stepped forward.

“You’re not touching her.””

Brooks smiled.

“You sound exactly like your sister.””

Olivia moved closer to me.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

But Brooks continued.

“You know what the hardest part was?””

Nobody answered.

“Your sister was the only person who refused to break.””

He looked at Olivia.

“We tried everything.””

My stomach twisted.

“What does that mean?””

Olivia looked away.

And that was when I understood.

There were things she still hadn’t told me.

Things she had carried alone.

Brooks saw my reaction.

“You thought she disappeared willingly?””

He laughed.

“Your sister spent years running.””

I looked at Olivia.

“Running from what?””

Her eyes filled.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not again.””

I stepped closer.

“I spent twelve years believing you were dead.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

A long silence.

Finally, Olivia whispered:

“I was hiding from everyone.””

My heart sank.

“Everyone?””

She nodded.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

Her eyes moved toward Ethan.

“Not even him.””

Ethan looked away.

I noticed.

“You weren’t sure about him?””

Olivia shook her head.

“At first.””

Brooks laughed.

“Finally. Some honesty.””

Olivia ignored him.

“Ethan found me after I escaped.””

“Escaped?””

She nodded.

“From them.””

She looked at Brooks.

“He wasn’t my enemy.””

I looked at Ethan.

“He protected you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Ethan answered this time.

“Because Brooks was watching you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Every move.””

The room went quiet.

Ethan continued.

“I tried to get information without putting you in danger.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I kept you alive.””

Before I could answer, a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Brooks looked annoyed.

“What was that?””

Then the emergency lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The building went dark.

For three seconds.

Then every phone in the room lit up.

A notification.

Everyone looked down.

Including Brooks.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

Olivia reached for her phone.

I looked at mine.

A video file.

Sent to everyone.

Sender:

Unknown.

Brooks opened it first.

His confidence disappeared.

The screen showed security footage.

Footage from twelve years ago.

The old evidence building.

A younger Brooks.

A younger Ethan.

And Olivia.

Alive.

The video showed Brooks ordering Ethan to destroy files.

Ordering him to close the investigation.

Ordering him to make Olivia disappear.

But then something happened.

Something nobody expected.

Ethan in the video refused.

Young Ethan said:

“If you hurt her, I’ll expose everything.””

Brooks’ face went dark.

The video continued.

Brooks leaned closer.

“You really think you’re a hero?””

Young Ethan answered:

“No.””

A pause.

“I think I’m the only person left who can stop you.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Brooks stared at Ethan.

“You recorded me.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Olivia.

“She did.””

Olivia nodded.

“I knew one day we would need proof.””

Brooks looked around.

At the phones.

At the evidence.

At the fact that his secret was no longer hidden.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Then he smiled.

Slowly.

“You think this changes everything?””

He reached into his coat.

Everyone froze.

Ethan moved instantly.

But Brooks didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small remote.

My heart dropped.

“What is that?””

Brooks looked at the old evidence building around us.

“The reason this place was abandoned.””

Olivia’s face went pale.

“No.””

Brooks pressed a button.

A distant sound echoed beneath the floor.

A mechanical click.

Then another.

I looked at Olivia.

“What did he do?””

She whispered:

“He’s going to destroy the evidence.””

Brooks smiled.

“And everything else.””

The floor trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Maya grabbed my hand.

Ethan looked toward the exit.

“We need to move.””

But Brooks blocked the hallway.

Because he wasn’t trying to escape.

He was trying to make sure nobody left.

He looked directly at me.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

“Your sister spent twelve years trying to reveal the truth.””

May you like

A smile.

“Now you’re going to spend your last few minutes watching it disappear.””
