Chapter 7: The Message That Changed Everything
I stared at Olivia’s message until the words stopped looking like words.
*Daniel, if Ethan finds you, do not trust him. He is the reason I disappeared.*
My fingers went numb.
My heart wanted to believe it.
Of course it did.
Because believing Ethan was responsible was easier.
It matched every suspicion I had carried for twelve years.
The missing evidence.
The closed investigation.
The way he always seemed one step ahead.
The way Maya reacted when she saw him.
Everything pointed to him.
But then I looked at Ethan.
And for the first time that night, I saw something I hadn’t expected.
Pain.
Not guilt.
Not fear of being caught.
Pain.
“You got that message too,” he said quietly.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Emily did.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
She froze.
“Because he’s lying.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice became sharper.
“Everyone.””
I pointed at the files scattered across the table.
“Ethan says Olivia disappeared to protect me.””
I pointed at the phone.
“Olivia says Ethan made her disappear.””
I looked between them.
“So which one of you is lying?””
Neither answered.
That silence was worse than any confession.
Ethan slowly lowered his phone.
“You deserve the truth.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
“Twelve years too late.””
His jaw tightened.
“I know.””
That surprised me.
Ethan Cole admitting fault felt impossible.
But he continued.
“I made mistakes.””
Emily shook her head.
“Mistakes?””
Ethan looked at her.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you know what Olivia wanted you to know.””
Emily stepped closer.
“And you know what you wanted everyone to believe.””
The tension between them was immediate.
This wasn’t a confrontation between strangers.
They had history.
Years of it.
I looked at Ethan.
“What happened that night?””
He looked at the floor.
For a moment, he looked older.
Tired.
Not like the powerful detective everyone feared.
Just like a man carrying something heavy.
“Your sister discovered something.””
“What?””
“A network.””
I frowned.
“What kind of network?””
“One involving people inside the system.””
I looked at the files.
“Missing witnesses?””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
My anger faltered.
Just slightly.
“So you admit it?””
“I admit Olivia was right.””
Emily stared at him.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I expect you to understand why I couldn’t tell the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“You were the detective.””
“Yes.””
“You had power.””
“Yes.””
“You had a badge.””
His eyes lowered.
“And that’s exactly why I was dangerous.””
The room went quiet.
I studied his face.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan walked toward the table.
He picked up one of the files.
“This investigation was bigger than Olivia.””
He opened it.
Inside were names.
Dates.
Locations.
“People disappeared because they knew too much.””
My eyes moved across the pages.
One name after another.
Then I saw something.
A name I recognized.
My hands stopped.
“What is this?””
Ethan looked at me.
“That’s the first person who tried to expose them.””
I stared at the page.
Because written there was the name of a man who had died eleven years ago.
A man everyone said had committed suicide.
But according to these files...
He was investigating Olivia’s disappearance.
I looked up.
“Who killed him?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
But then Emily spoke.
“Ethan.””
Her voice was different.
Afraid.
He turned.
“What?””
She was staring at something behind him.
The cabin window.
A small red light blinked in the darkness outside.
My stomach dropped.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan moved quickly.
He grabbed the files off the table.
“We need to leave.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because someone found us.””
Emily looked at him.
“You said nobody knew about this location.””
“I was wrong.””
That was the first time I heard fear in Ethan’s voice.
Not controlled fear.
Not fake fear.
Real fear.
He grabbed the recorder from the table.
“Where’s Maya?””
The question hit me.
My blood turned cold.
“She’s with Officer Brooks.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“She’s safe.””
His expression changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“Who exactly did you leave her with?””
I stared.
“Officer Brooks.””
Ethan looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
And whispered:
“That’s not possible.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel Brooks disappeared six years ago.””
The cabin went silent.
I felt like the floor had vanished.
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“He was declared missing after investigating a corruption case.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked just as shocked.
“That’s impossible,” she whispered.
I pulled out my phone.
My hands shook as I called the diner.
The line rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
A voice.
Not Maya.
Not Emily.
Not Officer Brooks.
A man.
“Hello, Daniel.””
I stopped breathing.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from tonight.
From years ago.
From the night my sister disappeared.
The voice continued.
“You really should stop trusting people who claim they’re here to help.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who are you?””
A quiet laugh.
“You know who I am.””
The call ended.
I looked at Ethan.
He already knew.
“Who was it?””
I swallowed.
“Brooks.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“No.””
Ethan immediately moved toward the door.
“We have to get back.””
I followed.
But before we reached the exit, Ethan stopped.
He looked at me.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“If Brooks has Maya…”
His expression hardened.
“Then this was never about the flash drive.””
I stared.
“What was it about?””
Ethan looked at the files.
Then at me.
“You.””
The word hung between us.
I felt a chill.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ethan opened the door.
The storm had stopped.
The forest was silent.
Too silent.
“Because Olivia didn’t disappear to hide from them.””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“She disappeared to protect you.””
I didn’t move.
Because every version of this story I had believed was collapsing.
Ethan walked into the darkness.
I followed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Not because I forgave him.
But because somewhere out there was Maya.
And I had promised her I would come back.
As we reached the car, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One photo.
I opened it.
And my entire body froze.
It was Maya.
Sitting in a dark room.
Crying.
And beside her was a woman.
A woman I had spent twelve years believing I would never see again.
Olivia.
May you like
Under the photo was one sentence:
*“Come alone if you want your sister and the girl to survive.””*
