Chapter 6: The Friend Who Held the Secret

The first thing I felt was betrayal.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Betrayal.

Because the person standing in the doorway was not Ethan Cole.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t some hidden enemy waiting in the shadows.

It was someone I had trusted.

Someone who had sat beside me through twelve years of grief.

Someone who had listened to me talk about Olivia until my voice broke.

Someone who had told me, over and over, that I needed to accept she was gone.

“Emily.””

Her name left my mouth like a question.

The diner waitress.

My friend.

The woman who had poured my coffee every morning for the last five years.

The woman who had hugged me when the anniversary of Olivia’s disappearance came around.

The woman who had cried with me.

She stood in the cabin doorway, soaked from the rain, her face pale.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then she whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to come alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you say?””

Emily stepped inside slowly.

“I said you weren’t supposed to come alone.””

I stared at her.

The recorder in my hand suddenly felt heavy.

“You knew about this.””

Her eyes dropped.

That was all the answer I needed.

“You knew.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“No, don’t do that.””

She flinched.

“Don’t say my name like you’re still my friend.””

The pain on her face looked real.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because if she had looked cold, if she had looked guilty, this would have been easier.

But she looked like someone carrying a burden.

A burden she had chosen not to share.

“How long?”” I asked.

Emily swallowed.

“How long what?””

“How long did you know Olivia was alive?””

The silence was devastating.

Because she didn’t deny it.

I stepped back.

“Twelve years?””

“Daniel…”

“Twelve years, Emily?””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know everything.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Everyone says that when they’re hiding something.””

She looked at the recorder.

“You heard her message.””

“Yes.””

“She wanted you to find out this way.””

“Why?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she walked toward the table.

“Because she knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

I stared at her.

“Believe you?””

She looked up.

“Daniel, I’m the reason Olivia survived.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

I couldn’t speak.

Emily’s voice shook.

“Twelve years ago, when Olivia disappeared, I knew something was wrong.””

I looked away.

My jaw tightened.

“You told me she left.””

“I lied.””

The honesty stopped me.

She continued.

“I lied because Ethan was watching.””

I turned back.

“What does that mean?””

Emily walked to the window and looked out at the dark trees.

“After Olivia found what she found, she came to me.””

“What did she find?””

“A connection.””

“Between what?””

Emily looked at me.

“Between Ethan and dozens of missing people.””

The room felt smaller.

“What?””

“She found patterns.””

Emily’s voice lowered.

“People who disappeared after crossing paths with certain investigations. Witnesses who changed their stories. Evidence that vanished.””

I shook my head.

“And Olivia found this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she go to the police?””

Emily gave a sad smile.

“Because the police were where the problem started.””

I thought of Ethan.

The badge.

The respect.

The trust.

Everything.

I looked at the recorder.

“What happened that night?””

Emily became quiet.

Then she sat down.

“I was the last person Olivia called before she disappeared.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“She told me she was scared.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she made me promise.””

I stared at her.

“You promised my sister to keep her alive by pretending she was dead?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The answer was barely audible.

I turned away.

I wanted to understand.

I wanted to.

But twelve years of pain didn’t disappear because someone finally gave me an explanation.

“You let me bury her.””

“I know.””

“You let my family grieve.””

“I know.””

“You let me hate myself because I thought I failed her.””

Emily’s voice broke.

“I know.””

The cabin fell silent.

Then I heard something outside.

A sound.

A car door closing.

Emily froze.

My anger disappeared instantly.

Because her reaction was the same one Maya had.

Fear.

I looked toward the window.

“Who is here?””

Emily didn’t answer.

“Emily.””

She stood quickly.

“We have to go.””

I grabbed her arm.

“Who is here?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Ethan.””

My blood ran cold.

“He followed me?””

“No.””

“Then how does he know?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She looked at the recorder.

Then at me.

“Because he knows about the cabin.””

A shadow moved across the window.

We both stopped.

Emily’s face went pale.

“He’s early.””

I stared at her.

“Early?””

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small key.

“What is that?””

“Something Olivia left.””

She walked toward a bookshelf at the back of the cabin.

Behind a row of old books was a hidden metal panel.

I stared.

“How did you know that was there?””

Emily looked at me.

“Because I helped Olivia build this place.””

My head spun.

This wasn’t just a hiding place.

It was a command center.

Inside the panel were dozens of files.

Photos.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Names.

Too many names.

I stepped closer.

At the top of the first folder was a photograph.

My sister.

Olivia.

Standing beside Maya’s mother.

My eyes narrowed.

“Who is she?””

Emily’s expression changed.

“That’s Sarah.””

“Maya’s mother?””

She nodded.

“They worked together.””

The pieces started connecting.

Maya wasn’t random.

The flash drive wasn’t random.

Olivia wasn’t just hiding.

She was investigating.

I opened another file.

Inside were photographs of Ethan.

Hundreds of them.

Meeting people.

Receiving envelopes.

Standing beside officials.

My hands shook.

“How long was she collecting this?””

“Twelve years.””

I looked at Emily.

“And you knew.””

“Yes.””

The anger came back.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Olivia believed if you knew, Ethan would use you to get to her.””

I looked at the files.

“And now?””

Emily stared at the door.

“Now he already knows.””

A knock echoed through the cabin.

Three slow knocks.

My entire body went cold.

The same pattern from the diner.

Emily whispered:

“He likes people to know he’s coming.””

The doorknob turned.

I looked around.

There was nowhere to hide.

The door opened slightly.

Then Ethan’s voice came from outside.

“Daniel.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Don’t answer.””

But it was too late.

Ethan stepped inside.

His eyes moved from me.

To Emily.

To the files spread across the table.

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“You found it.””

I stared at him.

“You killed my sister?””

For a moment, Ethan said nothing.

Then he looked at Emily.

And smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“No.””

He looked back at me.

“Your sister is alive because I made a choice.””

I stepped forward.

“What choice?””

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“The choice to let her disappear.””

I felt the world tilt.

“You’re saying you saved her?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m saying I saved you.””

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

He looked at the files.

“Because Olivia made sure you would never believe anything I said.””

The rain outside grew louder.

Ethan reached into his jacket.

Emily immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

Then slowly pulled out his phone.

Not a weapon.

A message.

He showed the screen to me.

One new text.

One sentence.

My heart stopped.

Because the sender was Olivia.

May you like

And the message said:

*“Daniel, if Ethan finds you, do not trust him. He is the reason I disappeared.””*
