Chapter 8: The Sister Who Never Left

The photograph stayed open on my phone.

I stared at it until my eyes burned.

Maya.

Alive.

Terrified.

And beside her…

Olivia.

My sister.

The woman I had mourned for twelve years.

The woman I had imagined lying in some forgotten place, never knowing if she had been afraid, hurt, or alone.

She was alive.

But she didn’t look like someone who had been rescued.

She looked like someone who had survived.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was thinner.

There were lines around her eyes that hadn’t been there before.

But it was her.

No doubt.

No mistake.

My hand shook as I lowered the phone.

“She’s alive.””

Nobody spoke.

Not Ethan.

Not Emily.

Not even the rain.

The world had gone quiet again.

Then Ethan said something that made my anger return.

“I told you.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His expression hardened.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t get to stand there after twelve years and act like you understand what this feels like.””

Ethan looked away.

And that was the first time I saw something I never expected from him.

Regret.

Not the fake kind.

Not the kind people show when they’re caught.

The kind that comes from knowing there’s nothing you can do to undo the damage.

Emily stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“Where did Brooks take them?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed once.

“No one ever knows.””

“That’s not fair.””

I looked at her.

“Fair?””

My voice became quieter.

“My sister vanished. You knew she was alive. You watched me destroy myself trying to find her.””

Emily looked down.

“I know.””

“And now Maya is missing.””

“I know.””

The repeated words were becoming unbearable.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Ethan stepped forward.

“We need to focus.””

I looked at him.

“Focus?””

“Yes.””

“My sister is alive.””

“And someone has her.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

But he was right.

I hated that.

I hated that the man I wanted to blame was also the only person who seemed to understand the danger.

I looked at the photo again.

“Where would they take them?””

Ethan stared at the image.

Then something changed.

Recognition.

“What?””

He zoomed in.

On the wall behind Olivia and Maya.

A small detail.

A crack.

A mark.

I leaned closer.

“What is that?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“That room.””

“What about it?””

“I know where it is.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

“Then we don’t have much time.””

I looked between them.

“Where?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then said:

“The old county evidence building.””

I frowned.

“That place was abandoned.””

“Yes.””

“Why would they take them there?””

“Because nobody goes there anymore.””

I stared at him.

“Except you.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Exactly.””

The drive there was silent.

No one spoke.

The town passed by in darkness.

The same streets I had walked for years searching for answers.

The same places where people had looked me in the eyes and told me to let go.

But now I knew.

The truth had been buried.

Not lost.

Buried.

When we reached the old evidence building, it looked exactly how I remembered.

Broken windows.

Rusting fences.

A place the town had forgotten.

But someone had been there.

The front door was unlocked.

That alone told us everything.

Ethan raised a hand.

“Stay behind me.””

I almost smiled.

“Still giving orders?””

“Still ignoring them?””

“Always.””

For a second, something almost human passed between us.

Then it disappeared.

We entered.

The building smelled like dust and old paper.

The hallway lights flickered.

Ethan moved carefully.

Too carefully.

Like he had been here before.

I noticed.

“You know this place well.””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

Finally, he said:

“This is where I found Olivia’s first file.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He kept walking.

“Twelve years ago.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because the file wasn’t supposed to exist.””

“What was in it?””

He looked back.

“The original investigation.””

I frowned.

“The one everyone thought was lost?””

He nodded.

“My copy.””

The words barely left his mouth.

Then a sound came from deeper inside.

A child crying.

Maya.

I ran.

“Daniel!””

I ignored Ethan.

I followed the sound down the hallway.

At the end was a locked room.

Inside, I saw them.

Maya.

Olivia.

Both sitting against the wall.

Both alive.

“Olivia!””

My sister looked up.

The moment she saw me, her face broke.

Not with fear.

With sadness.

Like she had been waiting for this moment but never wanted it to happen.

“Daniel.””

Her voice.

After twelve years.

My knees almost gave out.

I unlocked the door.

Maya ran toward me first.

I hugged her tightly.

She was shaking.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

She held onto me.

Then Olivia stood.

Neither of us moved.

There were too many years between us.

Too many questions.

Too much pain.

Finally, she whispered:

“You got older.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“So did you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

That was all it took.

All the anger.

All the confusion.

All the nights I wondered if she was dead.

It all came rushing out.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I had no choice.””

“You could have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

I stared.

“What?””

She looked toward Ethan.

He stood silently in the doorway.

“You don’t know what happened after I disappeared.””

“Then tell me.””

She took a breath.

“Ethan found me first.””

I looked at him.

My anger returned.

But Olivia shook her head.

“Not the way you think.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked at Ethan.

“He saved me.””

The room went silent.

I stared at my sister.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, Ethan was never the person I was running from.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at Olivia.

“But your message…”

“I sent that.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Olivia swallowed.

“I sent that message because I needed you to bring Ethan.””

The entire room changed.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“I knew he was the only one who could protect you.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“Then why did you say he was the reason you disappeared?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Because he was.””

The answer confused me.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then lowered her voice.

“Because Ethan was the reason I disappeared…”

A pause.

“…and the reason I survived.””

Before I could ask another question, the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Maya grabbed my hand.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

Then a voice echoed through the building.

A voice we all recognized.

Officer Brooks.

“You took long enough.””

Ethan immediately moved.

But the sound of multiple footsteps filled the hallway.

Not one person.

Many.

Olivia’s face turned pale.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

She whispered:

“He brought everyone.””

The emergency lights flickered on.

And standing at the end of the hallway were several armed men.

Behind them was Brooks.

Smiling.

And beside him was a folder.

The same folder Olivia had spent twelve years trying to expose.

Brooks lifted it.

“You all spent so much time looking for the truth.””

May you like

He smiled.

“Now I’m going to show you why the truth should have stayed buried.””
