Chapter 8: The Woman They Underestimated

Marcus controlled the narrative for forty-eight hours.

That was all he needed.

Forty-eight hours to turn suspicion into doubt.

Doubt into rumors.

Rumors into headlines.

Every news channel repeated the same story.

A wealthy heiress.

A broken engagement.

A dramatic wedding accusation.

Some people believed me.

Others didn’t.

Because that was the thing about truth.

It was slower than lies.

Lies ran.

Truth walked.

But truth arrived.

I sat in the conference room at Hartwell Medical Systems surrounded by my legal team.

Daniel placed his tablet on the table.

“Marcus has hired three public relations firms.””

I looked at the screen.

“He’s preparing for court.””

“He’s preparing for war.””

I nodded.

“Then we stop reacting.””

Everyone looked at me.

For years, people had seen me as Daniel Hartwell’s daughter.

The grieving woman.

The emotional woman.

The woman who needed protecting.

They forgot something.

My father trained me.

I knew how to fight.

“Release everything,” I said.

Daniel hesitated.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“The financial records?””

“Yes.””

“The recordings?””

“Yes.””

He looked concerned.

“Claire, if we release the full investigation, some of your private information will become public.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

The room became silent.

Then I said:

“I spent six months letting them believe I was weak.””

I closed the file.

“I’m done helping them believe it.””

That afternoon, Hartwell Medical Systems released a statement.

Not a defensive statement.

Not an emotional statement.

Evidence.

Every transaction.

Every recording.

Every document.

Every connection.

The internet changed within hours.

People who had questioned me began asking different questions.

Why did Marcus lie?

Why did Ethan hide money?

Why did Thomas betray his own family?

And most importantly:

Why did everyone underestimate Claire Hartwell?

That evening, I received a message.

From Marcus.

*You’re becoming your father.*

I stared at the screen.

Then replied.

*No.*

A few seconds passed.

*I’m becoming myself.*

He called immediately.

I answered.

“You’re angry.””

“No,” Marcus said.

His voice was different.

Less confident.

“You’re dangerous.””

I smiled slightly.

“That’s what people say when they realize they were wrong.””

Marcus was silent.

Then:

“You think this ends with me?””

“I think it ends with everyone who chose to hurt innocent people.””

A pause.

Then he said something unexpected.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

My expression changed.

“Know what?””

“Your father didn’t die naturally.””

The world stopped.

I stood.

“What did you say?””

Marcus continued.

“I thought you knew.””

My hands tightened around the phone.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

“Ethan was not involved with my father’s death.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“He wasn’t.””

My heart raced.

“Then who was?””

Silence.

Then:

“Find the medical report your father’s doctor changed.””

The call ended.

I immediately called Daniel.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

A terrible feeling settled over me.

I drove to his office.

The lights were off.

His door was unlocked.

“Daniel?””

No response.

Then I saw it.

His desk.

Papers everywhere.

A broken coffee cup.

And a message written on a sheet of paper.

Three words.

*STOP DIGGING, CLAIRE.*

Underneath was another sentence.

May you like

One that made my blood freeze.

*Your father’s death was not the beginning. It was the warning.*
