Chapter 5: The Hidden Enemy

I couldn’t move.

The person standing in my doorway was the last person I expected.

Daniel Reed.

My attorney.

My father’s closest legal advisor.

The man who had helped me expose Ethan.

The man who had sat across from me for weeks building the case.

He looked different now.

Not because his appearance changed.

Because I finally saw him clearly.

Thomas stepped aside.

Daniel walked in.

“I’m sorry, Claire.””

My voice came out quietly.

“Were you ever on my side?””

Daniel looked away.

That answer hurt more than a confession.

“You don’t understand.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that right before they betray me.””

Thomas crossed his arms.

“Daniel didn’t want this.””

“Then why is he here?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

Daniel placed the file on the table.

“I found something your father hid.””

I stared at him.

“You mean stole.””

His face tightened.

“No. Protected.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Not about Ethan.

Not about Thomas.

About me.

My heart raced.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father discovered someone was trying to destroy Hartwell Medical Systems years ago.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he pointed to the papers.

“Your father created a backup ownership structure.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Ethan’s plan was never about taking control.””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

Daniel continued.

“He wanted access.””

I stared.

“Access to what?””

Daniel turned the page.

And I saw it.

A patent.

A technology my father had spent ten years developing.

A surgical system that could transform the medical industry.

The company was valuable.

But the technology was priceless.

Ethan didn’t want my company.

He wanted my father’s final invention.

My hands shook.

“How did you know?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I helped your father hide it.””

The room went silent.

Then I understood.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I stared.

“My father asked you to keep secrets from me?””

“He asked me to protect you.””

I looked at Thomas.

Then Daniel.

Then the documents.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me.

But somehow, I was always the last person to know the truth.

A noise came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Thomas looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

“What did you do?””

Daniel answered calmly.

“I called the police.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You betrayed us?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I stopped protecting the wrong people.””

Minutes later, the police arrived.

Thomas was arrested.

The evidence against him was overwhelming.

But Ethan remained the biggest question.

Because when officers searched his accounts, they found something impossible.

A transfer.

A payment.

A message.

From someone who had been working with him.

Someone who had known everything.

The detective placed the printed message in front of me.

“We need you to identify this person.””

I looked at the name.

And my entire world stopped.

Because it was not Thomas.

It was not Vivian.

It was not Natalie.

It was someone else.

Someone who had sat in that chapel.

Someone who had laughed when Ethan said I needed a reminder.

The detective watched my face.

“Do you know them?””

I whispered the name.

And suddenly, the entire wedding made sense.

May you like

Because Ethan wasn’t the only one who thought he owned me.

He was just the first one arrogant enough to say it out loud.
