Chapter 2: The Evidence

The chapel went completely silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that happens when people realize they have been standing beside a disaster without knowing it.

The video showed a restaurant.

A private room.

Three months earlier.

Ethan sat at a table with Marcus and two men I recognized from his investment company.

On screen, Ethan looked relaxed.

Confident.

Untouchable.

“I don’t understand why she’s still fighting,” Marcus said.

The Ethan on the screen laughed.

“Because she still thinks this is her company.””

A few people in the chapel gasped.

Ethan stepped toward the projector.

“Claire, this is ridiculous.””

I didn’t look at him.

“Keep watching.””

The video continued.

“She’ll sign eventually,” Ethan said.

“After the wedding, everything becomes easier.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What if she refuses?””

Ethan smiled.

That smile.

The one I had seen a thousand times.

The one I once thought was charming.

“Then we make sure she has nothing left to protect.””

The room erupted.

Whispers.

Questions.

Shock.

Vivian stood up.

“That recording is fake.””

I finally looked at her.

“Is it?””

Her face hardened.

“You think you can embarrass my son with some edited video?””

I pressed a button.

Another file opened.

Then another.

Bank records appeared.

Emails.

Contracts.

Private messages.

Dates.

Amounts.

Names.

Ethan’s entire plan unfolded across the screen.

He had created fake consulting companies to move money away from Hartwell Medical Systems.

He had pressured employees.

Threatened executives.

Manipulated investors.

And he had planned to force me into signing control of my father’s company away.

The man who promised to protect my legacy had spent months trying to steal it.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

Hard.

“You’re done.””

Several guests saw it.

This time, nobody laughed.

I looked down at his hand.

Then back at his face.

“Let go.””

Something in my voice made him hesitate.

Maybe because it wasn’t fear.

Maybe because it was the first time he heard me speak without trying to please him.

A security guard moved closer.

Ethan released me.

The pastor looked devastated.

“Claire… is this true?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

The pastor looked at Ethan.

“Did you hurt her?””

Ethan immediately changed his expression.

The anger disappeared.

The victim appeared.

“I was trying to calm her down.””

I almost laughed.

That was Ethan’s greatest talent.

Turning every monster into a misunderstood hero.

“She fell,” Vivian said quickly.

My mother stood.

“No, she didn’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

My mother’s voice shook.

“But I saw the bruises.””

Ethan looked annoyed.

“Mrs. Hartwell, you’re emotional.””

My mother stared at him.

“You don’t get to use that word against women anymore.””

The room became colder.

The video continued playing.

The next recording was audio only.

Ethan’s voice filled the chapel.

“Once the merger happens, Claire won’t have the authority to remove me.””

A woman’s voice asked, “What if the board objects?””

Ethan answered.

“They won’t. People follow money.””

I watched the investors sitting in the front row.

Their expressions changed.

Because they realized something.

They weren’t watching Claire Hartwell’s downfall.

They were watching their own.

One investor, Richard Hale, stood suddenly.

“You lied to us.””

Ethan turned.

“Richard, don’t do this.””

“You told us the merger was approved.””

“It will be.””

“No,” Richard said.

“It won’t.””

The confidence on Ethan’s face started breaking.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Because Ethan never understood the difference between power and control.

Power is earned.

Control is borrowed.

And borrowed things eventually get taken back.

The final video appeared.

This one was from the hotel.

The morning of the wedding.

The camera angle was from inside my suite.

Ethan walked in.

Everyone watched as he searched through my documents.

He found the missing page from the prenuptial agreement.

“What did you do?”” he demanded.

My recorded voice answered.

“I removed the section that gave you control over Hartwell Medical Systems.””

The Ethan on screen laughed.

“You thought you could outsmart me?””

Then everyone saw what happened next.

They saw him shove me.

They saw my head hit the mirror.

They saw the moment I covered my mouth because I was afraid to scream.

The chapel exploded.

Someone shouted.

Someone else called the police.

Vivian covered her face.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she was afraid.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then he looked at me.

“You planned this.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“You used our wedding.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You used our wedding. I just stopped you from using me.””

For the first time, Ethan looked small.

Not innocent.

Not misunderstood.

Small.

The police entered minutes later.

But before they reached him, Ethan whispered something only I could hear.

“You think you won?””

I looked at him.

“I know I did.””

He smiled.

A cold, dangerous smile.

Then he leaned closer.

“Ask yourself one question, Claire.””

I frowned.

“What?””

His eyes moved toward Vivian.

“My mother wasn’t the only person helping me.””

My stomach tightened.

Because I knew Ethan.

He never revealed information unless he believed it would hurt.

The police officer grabbed his shoulder.

“Sir, you need to come with us.””

Ethan walked away.

May you like

But his final words stayed behind.

“You have no idea who else is involved.””
