Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Smile
The name on the paper blurred for a moment.
I read it once.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
*Marcus Vale.*
Ethan’s best friend.
His business partner.
The man who had stood beside him at the altar and laughed when Ethan joked about “reminding me who was boss.””
The man who had toasted our future.
The man who had hugged me at the rehearsal dinner and said, “You’re finally getting the family you deserve.””
I stared at the detective.
“No.””
He watched me carefully.
“You know him?””
I let out a slow breath.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
I looked back at the evidence.
“He’s the person who was standing closest to Ethan when he thought he had already won.””
The detective placed another file on the table.
“Marcus Vale transferred money to several accounts connected to Ethan’s operation. He also provided access codes to internal systems at Hartwell Medical Systems.””
I flipped through the documents.
The dates matched.
The transactions matched.
The messages matched.
But something bothered me.
Marcus was not just helping Ethan.
He was directing him.
A message appeared on the screen.
*Marcus: She is smarter than you think. Don’t underestimate her.*
Ethan replied:
*Ethan: She’s emotional. She’ll break.*
Marcus responded:
*Marcus: Make sure she does.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
For months, I had focused on Ethan because he was the person hurting me.
But Marcus had been standing behind him.
Watching.
Planning.
Waiting.
The detective leaned forward.
“There’s something else.””
He handed me a photograph.
It showed Marcus entering an old office building downtown.
I recognized the address immediately.
My father’s old research facility.
I stood.
“When was this taken?””
“Two weeks before your wedding.””
My stomach dropped.
Two weeks before the wedding, Marcus had visited the one place he had no reason to enter.
Unless he knew what was hidden there.
The detective watched my reaction.
“Claire, we believe Ethan was only the public face of the operation.””
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
“We think Marcus recruited him.””
That changed everything.
Because Ethan wanted power.
But Marcus wanted something else.
Something bigger.
That evening, I returned to Hartwell Medical Systems for the first time since the wedding disaster.
The building looked exactly the same.
The glass walls.
The polished floors.
The employees walking quickly between meetings.
But everything felt different.
Because now I knew how many people inside these walls had been forced to choose between loyalty and fear.
My father’s old assistant, Margaret, met me in the lobby.
The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears.
“Claire.””
I hugged her.
For the first time in days, I allowed myself to feel something other than anger.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I pulled back.
“For what?””
“For knowing something was wrong and staying quiet.””
I looked at her.
“What did you know?””
Margaret glanced around.
Then lowered her voice.
“Your father suspected Marcus years ago.””
My heart stopped.
“Years?””
She nodded.
“Marcus worked with your father when he was younger. Your father helped him after his own company failed.””
I remembered.
My father always believed in second chances.
“He gave Marcus a job?””
“Yes.””
“And Marcus repaid him by stealing from him?””
Margaret looked down.
“Your father said Marcus was dangerous because he didn’t hate successful people.””
I frowned.
“What did he mean?””
She swallowed.
“He hated being reminded that he wasn’t one of them.””
That sounded exactly like Marcus.
Unlike Ethan, who wanted to be admired, Marcus wanted to be feared.
I walked into my father’s old conference room.
The same room where Marcus had sat across from me and pretended to support me.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice immediately spoke.
“You should stop looking.””
My body went still.
“Marcus.””
Silence.
Then a small laugh.
“You always were your father’s daughter.””
“You’re going to prison.””
“Maybe.””
His calmness bothered me.
“Why are you calling?””
“To give you a chance.””
I almost laughed.
“A chance?””
“Yes.””
I walked toward the window.
“A chance to do what?””
“To walk away before you discover things you cannot forgive.””
My expression hardened.
“You threatened me.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I warned you.””
“You helped Ethan hurt me.””
“I helped Ethan control a situation that was already out of control.””
“You planned everything.””
“No, Claire.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“You did.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“You think Ethan forced his way into your life.””
The silence that followed felt heavier.
“But what if he didn’t?””
I stared at the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus whispered:
“Ask yourself why your father never told you the truth about how Ethan entered Hartwell.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because one sentence had created a question I couldn’t ignore.

How did Ethan really come into my life?
And why had my father kept that secret?
