Chapter 9: The Truth Everyone Buried

The gun was not the thing that terrified me.

It was Emily’s eyes.

Because I had known Emily once.

Before secrets.

Before fear.

Before everyone became a stranger wearing a familiar face.

And the woman standing in front of me was not angry.

She was desperate.

“Emily,” I whispered.

Her hand tightened around the gun.

“I know what this looks like.””

My eyes moved to Lily.

She was standing behind Emily, holding the teddy bear against her chest.

Alive.

Safe.

But scared.

“Put the gun down,” Detective Harris said calmly.

Emily looked at her.

“I will.””

Her voice shook.

“But not until Daniel hears the truth.””

I looked at Ryan.

He was frozen.

For the first time since this nightmare began, he looked completely powerless.

“Ryan,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

“Tell me.””

Ryan looked away.

“I can explain.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone had said that.

Vanessa.

Ryan.

Everyone who had hurt me with the truth they refused to share.

“I’m tired of explanations.””

I stepped closer.

“Eight years.””

My voice became harder.

“Eight years of lies.””

Ryan’s face broke.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Emily looked at him.

“Finally.””

Ryan looked at her.

“You don’t understand what I did.””

Emily’s expression changed.

“You’re right.””

She lowered the gun slightly.

“I don’t understand how you lived with it.””

Detective Harris looked between them.

“Someone needs to start talking.””

Emily nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

She looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, come here.””

Lily didn’t move.

She looked at me.

“Dad?””

My heart broke.

I opened my arms.

“Come here.””

She ran.

I caught her instantly.

The moment I held her, every fear, every doubt, every terrible thought disappeared.

She was my daughter.

Nothing could change that.

She buried her face into my chest.

“I knew you would come.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’ll always come.””

Behind me, Emily started crying.

Because she knew.

She had missed years of moments like this.

We moved upstairs.

Detective Harris took the gun from Emily and secured it.

Nobody spoke until we were sitting in the old living room.

The same room where my father used to watch baseball.

The same room where Ryan and I played as kids.

A place full of memories.

Now full of ghosts.

Detective Harris looked at Emily.

“Start from the beginning.””

Emily nodded.

“I met Daniel when we were twenty.””

She looked at me.

“I loved him.””

My throat tightened.

“I loved you too.””

Vanessa looked down.

Nobody needed to say what happened next.

Life happened.

People made mistakes.

People got scared.

But children didn’t deserve the consequences.

Emily continued.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I was going to tell Daniel.””

She looked at Ryan.

“But Ryan found out first.””

I looked at my brother.

“Why?””

Ryan looked ashamed.

“Because Emily called me.””

Emily nodded.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Emily looked at me.

“Someone had been following me.””

The room went quiet.

“I thought it was Mark.””

The detective asked:

“Why?””

“Because Mark became obsessed with Lily before she was even born.””

Emily’s hands shook.

“He believed the baby belonged to him.””

I frowned.

“But Lily wasn’t his.””

“No.””

Emily looked at me.

“She was yours.””

I looked down at Lily.

She was holding my hand.

“So why did everyone think otherwise?””

Emily’s eyes moved toward Ryan.

“Because someone changed the story.””

Ryan looked away.

The detective noticed.

“Mr. Carter?””

Ryan didn’t respond.

“Now.””

Ryan sighed.

“After Lily was born, Mark found out.””

“How?””

“I told him.””

Emily looked at him.

“You shouldn’t have.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

I stared.

“You told him?””

“I thought I could reason with him.””

“And?””

Ryan’s voice became quiet.

“I was wrong.””

Emily continued.

“Mark became dangerous.””

She looked at Lily.

“He started threatening me.””

“What kind of threats?””

Emily swallowed.

“He said if he couldn’t have me, he would make sure nobody else did.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“So you disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Why not come to me?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Because someone convinced me you were involved.””

The room went silent.

My eyes moved to Ryan.

“You.””

Ryan looked like he had been punched.

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“You told me Daniel knew.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You told me Daniel wanted custody.””

“I thought—”

“You thought wrong.””

Her voice cracked.

“You made me afraid of the one person who could have saved us.””

Ryan looked broken.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily shook her head.

“No apology fixes eight years.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you?””

She wiped her face.

“I found out later.””

“About Emily?””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you.””

I looked away.

“Then why?””

“Because I promised Emily I would protect Lily.””

“You protected her by pretending she was yours?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I thought if you knew, you would take Lily and disappear.””

I looked at Lily.

“And what about me?””

Vanessa cried.

“I was wrong.””

That was the first honest thing she had said all night.

Maybe the first honest thing any of them had said.

Detective Harris looked at Ryan.

“There is still one problem.””

Everyone turned.

“The person who sent the messages.””

Emily went pale.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she said:

“Mark.””

My heart sank.

“But he’s dead.””

Emily nodded.

“That’s what everyone thinks.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Emily looked at me.

“He didn’t die.””

Ryan whispered:

“I saw the body.””

Emily looked at him.

“No.””

Ryan froze.

“That wasn’t Mark.””

The detective leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Emily took a breath.

“Mark disappeared after trying to hurt Lily.””

She looked at me.

“Someone helped him fake his death.””

“Who?””

Emily looked at Ryan.

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Emily’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Ryan?””

He looked at Emily.

“You think I helped Mark?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Ryan stood.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“I made mistakes.””

A tear rolled down his face.

“But I never hurt Lily.””

I believed him.

And somehow that made everything worse.

Because if Ryan wasn’t the person behind it…

then who was?

The answer came from Lily.

A tiny whisper.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She looked at Emily.

Then at Ryan.

Then at me.

“The person who took me…”

She hugged Teddy tighter.

“He wasn’t Uncle Ryan.””

Everyone froze.

I stepped closer.

“Who was it?””

Lily’s face turned pale.

“He told me his name.””

My heart pounded.

“What name?””

She whispered:

“He said nobody would believe me because everyone thought he was gone.””

The room became silent.

Then Lily said:

“His name was Mark.””

Emily stood suddenly.

“That’s impossible.””

Lily shook her head.

“He showed me a picture.””

“What picture?””

“My mom and him.””

Emily went still.

Then Lily reached into Teddy’s hidden pocket.

The recorder.

But this time, she pulled out something else.

A small folded piece of paper.

My breath caught.

“The letter.””

Lily handed it to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was old.

Familiar.

Emily stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I read the first line.

And my entire body froze.

Because it wasn’t written by Emily.

It wasn’t written by my mother.

It was written by Mark.

And the first sentence said:

*Daniel Carter, if you are reading this, then I failed to keep the truth buried.*

I looked up.

Everyone was waiting.

I continued reading.

And the next line made my blood run cold.

*The child you raised is not the only thing I took from you eight years ago.*

I looked at Emily.

At Ryan.

At Vanessa.

Then back at the letter.

Because suddenly I understood.

Lily wasn’t the only secret.

May you like

The entire story of my life had been stolen from me.

And the final page of the letter was missing.
