Chapter 5: The Daughter I Never Knew I Had
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words on the screen.
Not because they were complicated.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
*Now ask who her real father is.*
The photo of Lily stared back at me.
My little girl.
Sitting somewhere dark.
Holding the teddy bear that had carried the truth my family tried to bury.
My knees almost gave out.
“Daniel?””
Vanessa’s voice sounded far away.
I looked at her.
“Who is Lily’s real father?””
The color drained from her face.
“Daniel…”
“Answer me.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“Don’t do this here.””
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””
My voice echoed through the woods.
“You lied to me.””
Ryan looked down.
Vanessa started crying.
“Please.””
“No.””
I held up the phone.
“My daughter is missing. Someone is threatening us. And now I’m finding out there’s a possibility I’m not even her father?””
Louder this time, I said:
“Who is Lily’s real father?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was the answer I feared.
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman I had loved.
The woman who had held my hand through every difficult moment of my life.
The woman who had looked me in the eyes every night and said, “Our daughter is lucky to have you.””
Was it all a lie?
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“I need the truth.””
Her lips trembled.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked away.
“After everything settled.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everything settled?””
I pointed toward the phone.
“My daughter is missing.””
Then toward the woods.
“We’re standing in the middle of nowhere because someone sent me a picture of her.””
My voice broke.
“And you’re telling me you were waiting for a better time?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
That answer hurt.
Because a part of me understood it.
But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.
Not now.
“Tell me.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Lily’s mother was Emily.””
I nodded.
“You said that.””
“Emily was my best friend.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the ground.
“Before I met you, I knew Emily.””
Ryan stayed silent.
I noticed that.
“Ryan knew her too?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Of course he did.””
The pieces were falling into place.
Not quickly.
Not cleanly.
But they were falling.
“Emily and I were close in college,” Vanessa continued.
“She was like a sister to me.””
“And?””
“And she got pregnant.””
The wind moved through the trees.
I stared at her.
“With who?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“With you.””
Everything inside me went silent.
The world became nothing but that one sentence.
With you.
I shook my head.
“No.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I backed away.
“That’s impossible.””
Ryan looked at me.
“Daniel.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He didn’t answer.
“You knew?””
His silence confirmed it.
I felt something crack inside me.
“You knew I had a daughter?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I couldn’t.””
I stared at him.
“You couldn’t?””
He looked ashamed.
“Emily asked me not to.””
I almost couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
Ryan looked toward the ground.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
His voice became quieter.
“She was afraid of what would happen if you found out.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And then what?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Emily died before she could tell you.””
“How?””
No one spoke.
I already knew.
The way they avoided my eyes.
The way the stranger on the phone had mentioned it.
The way Vanessa looked like she had been carrying a weight for years.
“How did Emily die?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She didn’t die in an accident.””
The forest suddenly felt colder.
“What happened?””
Ryan answered.
“She was killed.””
My breath caught.
“Killed?””
He nodded slowly.
“Someone wanted her silent.””
I looked at Lily’s picture again.
My hands shook.
“She knew?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Who?””
“Lily.””
The question came out broken.
“Did Lily know I was her father?””
Vanessa looked away.
And that was worse than any answer.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“No.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She didn’t know.””
“Why?””
“Because we were afraid.””
I stared at her.
“You were afraid?””
Ryan stepped in.
“Daniel, listen.””
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to explain anything.””
My voice lowered.
“You watched me raise someone who was my daughter, and you said nothing.””
Ryan’s eyes filled with regret.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His face changed.
Because the answer was something he hated.
“Because Emily left something behind.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A letter.””
Vanessa looked at him sharply.
“Ryan.””
He ignored her.
“She wrote instructions.””
My heart pounded.
“What instructions?””
Ryan looked at me.
“She said if anything happened to her, Lily should stay away from you.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
“Why would she say that?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because Emily thought you were in danger.””
I looked at both of them.
“What danger?””
Before anyone could answer, my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
This time there was no photo.
Just a video.
My fingers hesitated.
Then I pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
The camera moved slightly.
And there was Lily.
Alive.
Sitting on a chair.
The teddy bear in her arms.
My heart nearly stopped.
“Lily!””
She looked toward the camera.
“Dad?””
I stepped closer.
“Baby, I’m here.””
But she couldn’t hear me.
The video wasn’t live.
Her eyes were red from crying.
Then she spoke.
“Dad, if you’re watching this…”
She looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
I covered my mouth.
“Don’t say that.””
Her voice continued.
“I found something in Grandma’s old box.””
I froze.
Grandma.
My mother.
“What?””
Lily held up a piece of paper.
A letter.
“I think it was supposed to be yours.””
The video shook.
Someone outside the room moved.
Lily looked scared.
Then she whispered:
“Uncle Ryan told me not to tell you.””
My eyes moved toward Ryan.
He went pale.
“He said if you knew the truth…”
Lily started crying.
“He said you would hate me.””
My entire body went cold.
“No.””
I whispered.
“No, baby.””
But the video continued.
“And he said…”
The door behind Lily creaked open.
Her eyes widened.
“Dad…”
The video froze.
A shadow appeared in the doorway behind her.
A man’s voice said:
“You shouldn’t have shown him that.””
The screen went black.
I looked up slowly.
Ryan was staring at me.
But he wasn’t the only one afraid.
Vanessa was crying.
And I realized something.
They both knew exactly what Lily had found.
“What was in that letter?””
Nobody answered.
I stepped toward Ryan.
“What was in Emily’s letter?””
Ryan looked at me.
For the first time, he looked completely defeated.
“She wrote the truth about Lily’s father.””
My heart pounded.
“I know that.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He took a breath.
“The letter wasn’t about proving you were her father.””
I stared at him.
“Then what was it about?””
Ryan looked at the phone.
At the frozen image of Lily.
Then back at me.
“It was about proving who wasn’t.””
A cold silence followed.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“It means Emily was never sure Lily was yours.””
My stomach turned.
“Then whose daughter is she?””
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa started crying harder.
And then Ryan said the one name I never expected.
“The man who hurt her.””
I felt every hair on my body rise.
“No.””
Ryan nodded.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.””
My phone buzzed one more time.
May you like
A final message appeared.
*Now you understand why I had to take her. She was never yours.*
