Chapter 7: The Voice From The Past
For a moment, nobody in the room moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody spoke.
Because the impossible had just become real.
Emily was alive.
The woman everyone said was gone.
The woman whose name had haunted every secret in my family.
The woman who was supposed to be buried in the past.
She was on the phone.
Talking to me.
“Emily?”” I whispered.
My voice barely sounded like my own.
“Yes.””
The answer was soft.
Human.
Real.
I grabbed the edge of Lily’s desk to steady myself.
“No.””
A thousand thoughts crashed into each other.
“She’s dead.””
“I know.””
“You died.””
“I know.””
“Then who am I talking to?””
There was silence.
Then she said:
“Someone who spent eight years hiding because I thought it was the only way to keep Lily alive.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
Ryan looked like he couldn’t move.
Detective Harris slowly walked closer.
She motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
Everyone heard her voice.
“Daniel…”
The way she said my name brought back memories I didn’t know I still had.
A summer afternoon.
A college hallway.
A girl with messy hair laughing because I spilled coffee all over my shirt.
Emily.
Before everything became complicated.
Before secrets.
Before pain.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because someone is listening.””
My eyes moved around the room.
The detective immediately understood.
“Who?””
Emily hesitated.
Then:
“The person who has Lily.””
My chest tightened.
“You said someone I trust.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
A long silence followed.
I looked at Ryan.
Then Vanessa.
Neither looked away.
Emily finally spoke.
“Daniel, before I tell you, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Lily was never taken because of who her father is.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
“Because of what she found.””
The letter.
My mind returned to the video.
Lily holding a piece of paper.
Something she thought belonged to me.
“What was in that letter?””
Emily’s voice changed.
Fear entered it.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“Of what happened the night I disappeared.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Detective Harris.
She was listening carefully.
“Emily, everyone thinks you died.””
“I know.””
“Why let them believe that?””
“Because the person who tried to kill me thought I was gone.””
The words hit like a punch.
Tried to kill me.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Ryan whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Emily continued.
“Daniel, I didn’t have a choice.””
“Who did this?””
Another pause.
Then:
“I don’t know who planned it.””
My heart sank.
“But I know who helped.””
The detective stepped closer.
“Emily, this is Detective Harris. We need your location.””
Emily went quiet.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.””
“Why?””
“Because I already trusted the wrong person once.””
Her voice broke.
“And I can’t do that again.””
The call became silent.
“Emily?””
Nothing.
Then suddenly:
“Daniel?””
“Yes?””
Her voice softened.
“Tell Lily I’m sorry.””
My eyes burned.
“Tell her yourself.””
Another silence.
Then the line disconnected.
Nobody spoke for almost a minute.
Then Detective Harris turned to us.
“Someone here knows more than they’re saying.””
No one argued.
Because she was right.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know Emily was alive?””
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“Did Ryan?””
Ryan looked offended.
“No.””
But something about his answer felt incomplete.
Not a lie.
Not exactly.
A hidden piece.
“Ryan.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Where were you the night Emily disappeared?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But Detective Harris noticed too.
“Mr. Ryan Carter?””
Ryan looked at her.
“I already answered questions about this years ago.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
She stepped closer.
“Where were you that night?””
Ryan looked down.
“I was with Vanessa.””
The room became still.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Detective Harris looked between them.
“You were together?””
“Yes.””
“How long had you been seeing each other?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Six months.””
The detective nodded slowly.
“And Emily knew?””
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“Emily knew about you two?””
Ryan nodded.
“She found out.””
“How?””
“She saw messages.””
“And?””
Ryan looked away.
“And she was angry.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Angry enough to fake her death?””
“No.””
Ryan looked at me.
“Emily wasn’t trying to punish anyone.””
“Then what was she doing?””
“Running.””
“From who?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
Detective Harris stepped in.
“Mr. Carter, you said Emily was afraid of two people.””
Ryan looked at her.
“Mark and Daniel.””
“But she contacted Daniel tonight.””
“Yes.””
“Which means she’s no longer afraid of Daniel.””
Ryan said nothing.
The detective’s eyes narrowed.
“Then why was Daniel on the list?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Because Emily was wrong.””
The answer surprised me.
“She thought Daniel was dangerous.””
“Why?””
“Because someone made her believe it.””
“Who?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
But this time, I believed him.
Because he looked as lost as I felt.
The search for Lily continued.
Police officers arrived.
The house filled with voices.
Footsteps.
Radios.
People looking through every corner.
But I stood frozen in Lily’s room.
Because one question kept repeating in my head.
How could everyone know pieces of my daughter’s life except me?
A small box sat under Lily’s bed.
I pulled it out.
Inside were old drawings.
Photos.
Little memories.
A child’s collection of everything important to her.
Then I found something strange.
A photograph.
It was old.
The edges were worn.
I picked it up.
My hands froze.
It was me.
And Emily.
Young.
Happy.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
Behind us stood a little girl.
A baby.
Wrapped in a pink blanket.
I turned it over.
Written on the back:
*Daniel and Emily — Summer before everything changed.*
My heart pounded.
Detective Harris came over.
“What did you find?””
I handed it to her.
She studied it.
Then looked at me.
“Is that Lily?””
I nodded.
“She looks about six months old.””
Detective Harris examined the photo.
“Mr. Carter…”
“What?””
She pointed at the corner.
“There’s a date.””
I looked.
The date was eight years ago.
The same year Lily was born.
But underneath the date was another marking.
A small handwritten note.
One sentence.
My blood turned cold.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It was my mother’s.
*If Daniel finds this, it means Vanessa failed to keep her promise.*
I stared at the words.
My mother.
She had known.
She had been part of this.
I turned the photo over again.
There was more writing.
A final line.
*The truth about Lily was never hidden to protect her. It was hidden to protect Daniel.*
I looked at Detective Harris.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Emily’s number.
A photo appeared.
Lily.
Still alive.
Still holding the teddy bear.
But this time, someone was standing behind her.
The picture was blurry.
But I recognized the clothes.
The watch.
The hand resting on Lily’s shoulder.
My stomach dropped.
Because the person standing behind my daughter wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t Mark.
It wasn’t some enemy from the past.
It was someone who had been in my house.
Someone who had hugged Lily.
Someone who had told me they loved her.
I slowly looked up.
Across the room, Ryan was standing there.
But he wasn’t the person in the photo.
The person behind Lily was wearing the same jacket Ryan had been wearing when he arrived.
The same jacket now hanging by my front door.
I turned toward him.
“Ryan…”
His face changed.
He saw the picture.
And for the first time all night…
he looked truly terrified.
“Daniel,” he whispered.
“I can explain.””
I stared at him.
My voice came out cold.
“Then explain why you’re standing in my house…”
May you like
I lifted the phone.
“…while a picture shows you standing behind my daughter somewhere else.””
