Chapter 6: The Truth Buried Beneath Eight Years

I read the message again.

Then again.

My brain kept rejecting it.

*She was never yours.*

Four words.

Four words that somehow managed to destroy eight years of memories.

The first time Lily called me Dad.

The first time she took my hand at the grocery store because she was scared of getting lost.

The night she had a fever and slept on my chest because she said my heartbeat made her feel safe.

Was all of that meaningless?

No.

I refused to believe that.

A person’s blood didn’t create a father.

Love did.

But someone had taken my daughter.

Someone had hurt her.

And now they were trying to make me doubt the only thing that mattered.

“Daniel.””

Vanessa’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

“Tell me the truth.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Vanessa looked broken.

“I know Emily was afraid before she died.””

“Afraid of who?””

She looked at Ryan.

My stomach tightened.

“Why do you keep looking at him?””

Ryan immediately looked away.

That was all I needed to see.

“You know something.””

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to protect people anymore.””

His face hardened.

“I was trying to protect Lily.””

“By lying to me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Ryan took a breath.

“I thought keeping you away was the only way to keep her safe.””

My anger burned.

“Safe from what?””

Ryan looked toward the dark woods.

“From the same person who has her now.””

The air left my lungs.

“You know who took her?””

Ryan didn’t answer quickly enough.

“You know.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Ryan’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“I think it’s Mark.””

The name returned.

The dead man.

The number.

The message.

My skin turned cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Ryan looked at me.

“I thought so too.””

“You told me he was dead.””

“He is.””

“Then how is he texting me?””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody knew.

Or because they knew too much.

I couldn’t tell anymore.

We returned to the house.

The police had to be called.

I didn’t care what Vanessa or Ryan thought.

I didn’t care what secrets came out.

My daughter was missing.

That was the only thing that mattered.

The officer arrived twenty minutes later.

A woman named Detective Harris.

She was calm, professional, and immediately noticed something was wrong.

Not because of the missing child.

Because of the people standing in the room.

“You all know each other?””

“Yes,” I said.

Her eyes moved between us.

“Family?””

I hesitated.

That one second told her enough.

“Mr. Carter, I need everyone to be honest with me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Ryan.

Then the empty staircase.

“My daughter disappeared from her bedroom.””

The detective’s expression changed.

“How old?””

“Eight.””

“Name?””

“Lily.””

She wrote it down.

“When did you last see her?””

I looked at the clock.

“About forty minutes ago.””

“Anyone else in the house?””

I answered carefully.

“My wife.””

Detective Harris looked at Vanessa.

“And?””

I paused.

“My brother.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Your brother?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“I was here when she disappeared.””

“Why were you here?””

Nobody answered.

The detective noticed.

Again.

She noticed everything.

“Mr. Carter.””

I looked at her.

“I’m going to ask this once.””

Her voice became firmer.

“Is there anything about this situation that I need to know?””

I thought about lying.

Protecting my family.

Protecting their reputation.

But then I remembered Lily hiding a recorder inside a teddy bear because she thought adults would ignore her.

“No.””

I looked directly at Vanessa and Ryan.

“Not anymore.””

I told her everything.

Not every detail.

Not yet.

But enough.

The bruises.

The recording.

Ryan.

The messages.

The unknown number.

Emily.

Mark.

When I finished, Detective Harris sat quietly for a moment.

Then she looked at me.

“Who is Mark?””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Mark was someone from our past.””

“That’s not very specific.””

“No.””

“Try again.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Mark was Emily’s fiancé.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ryan looked at me.

“I didn’t tell you that part.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Emily was engaged?””

She nodded.

“Before she died.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

The detective looked at me.

“What’s wrong?””

I shook my head.

“Nothing.””

But everything was wrong.

Every answer opened another door.

Every door led to another secret.

Detective Harris continued.

“Why would Mark want your daughter?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ryan spoke.

“Because he believed Lily belonged to him.””

My eyes moved toward him.

“Why?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Because Emily told him something.””

“What?””

Ryan hesitated.

“Before she died, she told Mark that Lily wasn’t yours.””

The words hurt less this time.

Not because they mattered less.

Because I was starting to understand.

Someone had been manipulating this truth for years.

Someone wanted me confused.

Angry.

Distracted.

Detective Harris stood.

“I need the letter.””

Everyone looked at her.

“The letter Lily mentioned.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“We don’t have it.””

“But someone does.””

The detective looked at the frozen video on my phone.

“She found something.””

I nodded.

“She said it was from her grandmother’s box.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“When did your mother die?””

“Two years ago.””

She wrote something down.

“Did she know about Lily’s background?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She knew everything.””

The detective looked up.

“Everything?””

I nodded.

“My mother knew Lily wasn’t biologically mine?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence answered.

I stepped back.

“My own mother knew?””

Vanessa cried.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ryan quietly said:

“More than you think.””

Detective Harris searched the house.

While she did, I stood in Lily’s room.

The room where everything had changed.

I picked up her favorite drawing from the desk.

It was a picture of our family.

Four people.

Me.

Vanessa.

Lily.

And Ryan.

She had drawn us holding hands.

I stared at Ryan’s face on the paper.

My brother.

The man I trusted.

The man who knew more about my daughter than I did.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

Ryan stood at the doorway.

I didn’t want him there.

But I didn’t tell him to leave.

Not yet.

“Why?””

He looked confused.

“Why what?””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His expression collapsed.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because Emily made me promise.””

“Why would she make you promise?””

Ryan took a long breath.

“Because the night she died…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“The night she died, she called me.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Ryan looked at me.

“She said someone was trying to take Lily.””

“Who?””

His voice dropped.

“She said if anything happened to her, I had to keep Lily away from two people.””

“Who?””

Ryan looked at me.

“One was Mark.””

My heart pounded.

“And the other?””

Ryan hesitated.

That hesitation terrified me.

“Ryan.””

He whispered:

“You.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She was afraid of you.””

The room went silent.

I felt anger rise.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then why say it?””

“Because that’s what she believed.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Ryan and I stared at it.

Detective Harris looked up from downstairs.

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

Then Detective Harris said:

“Answer it.””

My hand shook as I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman’s voice spoke.

A voice I had never heard before.

But Ryan recognized it.

His face turned pale.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He couldn’t answer.

The woman spoke.

“Daniel?””

I held the phone tighter.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Emily.””

The room stopped.

My heart stopped.

Ryan dropped into the chair.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

And the voice continued:

“I know you think I’m dead.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Who is this?””

The woman whispered:

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

A pause.

“I should have told you the truth before they made you hate me.””

I looked at Ryan.

At Vanessa.

At the empty room.

Then the voice said:

“Lily is not Mark’s daughter.””

My entire body froze.

“She’s yours.””

I closed my eyes.

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

Then Emily said the words that changed everything.

“But the person who took her…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“…is someone you trust more than anyone.””
