Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Lies

The room exploded into chaos.

Detective Harris immediately stepped between me and Ryan.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

Her voice was sharp.

Commanding.

But I barely heard her.

All I could see was the photo on my phone.

Lily.

My little girl.

Sitting somewhere unknown.

And behind her…

The jacket.

The watch.

The familiar shape of someone standing close enough to touch her.

Ryan’s face had gone pale.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

And that scared me more.

“Daniel,” Ryan said quietly.

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

Because he knew.

Whatever explanation he had, I was not ready to hear it.

“Detective,” I said.

My eyes never left Ryan.

“Ask him.””

Detective Harris looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter, whose jacket are you wearing?””

Ryan looked down.

The jacket.

The same dark jacket in the photo.

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t know?””

“I mean—I know it’s mine.””

“Then explain.””

“I can’t.””

The answer made the room colder.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Why can’t you?””

Ryan looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

Then finally at the floor.

“Because if I tell you everything, you’ll understand why Emily disappeared.””

Nobody moved.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“Then tell me.””

Ryan shook his head.

“Not here.””

I almost laughed.

“Not here?””

“My daughter is missing.””

“I know.””

“Then you know I don’t care where.””

Ryan looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the brother I grew up with.

The person who would have done anything for me.

Then I remembered the last eight years.

The secrets.

The lies.

The silence.

“Talk.””

Ryan took a slow breath.

“Eight years ago, the night Emily disappeared…”

He stopped.

Detective Harris crossed her arms.

“Continue.””

Ryan swallowed.

“I wasn’t with Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“What?””

Ryan looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

The words hit her hard.

I looked between them.

“You lied.””

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where were you?””

He looked at me.

“With Emily.””

The room went silent.

Eight years earlier.

That was the place where every secret seemed to begin.

Eight years earlier.

Before Lily learned to walk.

Before Vanessa became my wife.

Before I knew my life was built on missing pieces.

“Why were you with Emily?”” I asked.

Ryan looked exhausted.

“Because she called me.””

“Why?””

“She was scared.””

“Of Mark?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then who?””

Ryan looked at me.

“You.””

I felt anger rise again.

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I’m not saying you did anything.””

“Then what?””

Ryan’s voice broke slightly.

“I’m saying Emily believed someone had convinced you to hurt her.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She thought someone was manipulating you.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“The night she disappeared, she gave me Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was six months old.””

My mind struggled to process it.

“You had Lily?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Three days.””

I stared.

“Three days?””

Ryan nodded.

“Emily was trying to leave.””

“Leave where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Why didn’t she take Lily?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because she thought someone was watching her.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

“And then?””

Ryan looked down.

“Then I made the biggest mistake of my life.””

“What?””

“I gave Lily to Vanessa.””

My face changed.

“Why?””

“Because Emily asked me to.””

“Why would Emily ask Vanessa?””

Ryan looked at her.

“Because Vanessa was the only person Emily trusted.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I promised her.””

I turned.

“What?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I promised Emily I would protect Lily.””

“By lying to me?””

She nodded.

“I thought I was doing the right thing.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You thought you were controlling the truth.””

Vanessa looked away.

Because she knew I was right.

Detective Harris walked toward Ryan.

“You’re saying Emily was alive after that?””

“Yes.””

“Where did she go?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you stayed in contact?””

Ryan hesitated.

Too long.

Detective Harris noticed.

“You did.””

Ryan looked down.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You talked to her?””

“Sometimes.””

“For eight years?””

“Yes.””

“While I raised her daughter?””

Ryan’s face broke.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t want your apology.””

Ryan looked at me.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying Emily asked them not to.””

Ryan looked at me.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Of what would happen if the wrong person found Lily.””

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Another message.

I looked down.

This time there was no picture.

Only a location.

An address.

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want your daughter back.*

Detective Harris immediately said:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“My daughter is there.””

“You don’t know that.””

“I do.””

“Mr. Carter—”

“I’m going.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

His expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You kept secrets.””

“I know.””

“You were with Emily the night she disappeared.””

“I know.””

I looked him in the eyes.

“And somehow, my daughter is with someone wearing your jacket.””

Ryan looked hurt.

But he nodded.

“You have every reason not to trust me.””

Finally.

Something honest.

Detective Harris took the phone.

“We need to trace the location.””

“Do it.””

She looked at the screen.

Then her expression changed.

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

“Detective?””

She looked at me.

“This address…”

“What?””

She swallowed.

“It’s an abandoned property.””

“Whose?””

She looked at Ryan.

“Your father’s old house.””

The room went silent.

My father’s old house.

A place I hadn’t visited in fifteen years.

A place where my family’s darkest memories lived.

“What would Lily be doing there?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ryan whispered:

“Because that’s where Emily hid the truth.””

We arrived twenty minutes later.

Detective Harris followed close behind.

I wanted to go alone.

But I knew she was right.

Walking into a possible trap without backup would not save Lily.

It would only create another person she had to lose.

The old house stood at the edge of the property.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A place frozen in time.

I stepped onto the porch.

The wood creaked beneath my feet.

Ryan stood behind me.

“This is where it happened.””

I looked back.

“What?””

He stared at the house.

“Where Emily gave me Lily.””

The front door was unlocked.

That scared me.

Someone wanted us to enter.

Inside, the air smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Rain.

Detective Harris searched room by room.

Then I heard it.

A sound.

A tiny sound.

A child crying.

“Lily?””

I ran.

“Lily!””

The crying stopped.

I reached the basement door.

It was locked.

Behind it…

a voice whispered.

“Dad?””

My heart shattered.

“Lily!””

I grabbed the handle.

“It’s okay. I’m here.””

Her voice shook.

“Dad, don’t open it.””

I froze.

“Why?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because he’s waiting.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

She moved closer.

“Who is waiting, Lily?””

My daughter whispered through the door:

“The person who told me you weren’t my real dad.””

My hand tightened around the handle.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Lily said:

“Uncle Ryan.””

I turned slowly.

Ryan was standing at the end of the hallway.

His face was completely broken.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t move.

Because behind me, my daughter was trapped.

And in front of me stood the man she was afraid of.

Then the basement door unlocked from the inside.

Slowly.

The handle turned.

The door opened a few inches.

And a voice came from the darkness behind Lily.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that had been impossible.

A voice that belonged to someone who should have been dead.

“Daniel.””

I stared into the darkness.

Emily stepped forward.

Alive.

Terrified.

And holding a gun.

“Don’t trust Ryan.””

Everyone froze.

Emily looked directly at me.

“He’s the reason Lily was taken.””

Ryan whispered:

“No.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your brother wasn’t protecting Lily from the truth.””

May you like

She looked at Ryan.

“He was protecting himself from it.””
