Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside the House
Lucia pointed across the room.
And every person followed her finger.
For a moment, nobody understood.
Then Luca did.
His face changed.
Not because he was shocked.
Because some part of him had already suspected.
“No.””
The word escaped him before he could stop it.
Lucia’s eyes filled with sadness.
“I’m sorry.””
Luca looked at the person standing near the doorway.
The person who had been beside him for years.
The person who had handled his schedules, his meetings, his private affairs.
The person who knew every weakness, every habit, every place Luca went when he needed silence.
His closest advisor.
His father’s old friend.
The silver-haired man.
Adrian Vale.
Adrian didn’t move.
He simply looked at Luca.
And somehow, that calm expression was worse than anger.
“Adrian?””
Luca’s voice was barely above a whisper.
The man who had helped raise him.
The man who had taught him business.
The man who had stood beside him at his father’s funeral.
The man Luca trusted more than almost anyone.
Adrian sighed.
“I hoped you would never have to learn this way.””
The room erupted.
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
She looked at Adrian like she was seeing him for the first time.
“You?””
Adrian looked at her.
“You knew enough to become dangerous.””
Her face went pale.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father was not the only person who made mistakes.””
Luca stepped forward.
“You were there.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Yes.””
“The night my father died.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew everything.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Luca’s expression hardened.
“How long?””
Adrian looked down.
“Long enough.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“Since before you were born.””
The words hit everyone.
Even Lucia looked away.
Luca stared.
“What?””
Adrian walked slowly toward the table.
“Your father and I were friends long before Moretti Holdings existed.””
Luca’s hands tightened.
“You were partners.””
“Yes.””
“And enemies?””
Adrian was silent.
That silence was enough.
Luca laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“My entire life.””
He looked around the room.
“My entire life has been surrounded by people who knew the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
“And everyone decided I was better off not knowing.””
Lucia stepped closer.
“Luca…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke slightly.
“No more.””
The room became still.
“I want the truth.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Luca’s eyes turned cold.
“I have spent eighteen years living with a lie.””
A pause.
“I can survive the truth.””
Adrian looked older suddenly.
Not physically.
But emotionally.
Like he had carried this secret too long.
“Your father wanted to leave.””
Luca frowned.
“You said that already.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Your father didn’t just want to leave the business.””
A pause.
“He wanted to expose everyone involved.””
Lucia closed her eyes.
Luca looked at her.
“Everyone?””
Adrian nodded.
“Politicians. Investors. People with power.””
“And you?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Luca stepped closer.
“Were you one of them?””
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Adrian said:
“Yes.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Luca stared.
“You were part of it.””
“Yes.””
“And my father trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“And you betrayed him.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Yes.””
Nobody moved.
I watched Luca absorb those words.
A person could prepare for enemies.
Enemies were simple.
You knew where they stood.
But betrayal from someone you loved?
That was different.
It changed the memories.
Every conversation.
Every piece of advice.
Every moment of trust.
Luca looked at Adrian.
“Why?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Because your father made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“He chose you.””
The answer confused Luca.
“What?””
“Your father found out that the people around him planned to use you.””
Adrian’s voice became quieter.
“He wanted to destroy the entire network before you inherited it.””
Luca looked at the letter.
“My father was protecting me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why kill him?””
Adrian looked away.
“Because he was winning.””
A chill moved through the room.
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Who ordered it?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Lucia stepped forward.
“Luca.””
He turned.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I need to hear it.””
Lucia looked at Adrian.
And Adrian finally said the words.
“The person who ordered your father’s death was not a stranger.””
A pause.
“It was someone in the family.””
Everyone waited.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Then at Lucia.
Then finally at Luca.
“Your uncle.””
The room froze.
Luca stared.
“My uncle died before I was born.””
Adrian nodded.
“That is what everyone was told.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because every secret in this family seemed to come back to the same thing.
A death that wasn’t a death.
A truth that wasn’t a truth.
A story carefully built for someone to believe.
“What are you saying?””
Adrian looked at Lucia.
“Tell him.””
Lucia shook her head.
“No.””
“Lucia.””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
Luca noticed.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“My brother was alive.””
The words landed like a storm.
Luca stepped back.
“My uncle?””
“Yes.””
“The man everyone said died?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lights flickered.
Again.
Everyone froze.
The same thing had happened before.
The same warning.
The same feeling of being watched.
A guard immediately reached for his radio.
“Security?””
Static.
Nothing.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone was inside the mansion.
Someone else.
Luca looked toward the staircase.
“How many people are in this house?””
The guards exchanged looks.
One of them answered:
“Everyone who was invited.””
Luca’s expression changed.
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
Then Lucia.
“Not everyone.””
The guard frowned.
“What do you mean, sir?””
Luca looked toward the dark hallway.
“Someone else has been here.””
A noise came from above.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming down the stairs.
Everyone turned.
A figure appeared at the top.
An older man.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
Luca stopped breathing.
Because he had seen that face before.
In old photographs.
In stories.
In the memories everyone told him.
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Like someone returning to a place that still belonged to him.
“Hello, Luca.””
Nobody spoke.
Lucia began to cry.
“No…”
The man continued walking down.
“You’ve grown into your father’s son.””
Luca stared.
Unable to move.
Unable to understand.
Because the man standing in front of him was supposed to have been dead for thirty years.
Adrian whispered the name.
The name that changed everything.
“Marco Moretti.””
Luca looked at his mother.
Then at the man.
And finally understood.
The person who had been controlling everything was not hiding in the shadows.
He had been waiting.
Inside the family.
May you like
Inside the house.
And now he was back to claim what he believed was his.
