Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead
“I’m sorry I left you.””
The voice came from the darkness.
Nobody moved.
Not because they were afraid.
Because nobody knew how to react.
For eighteen years, Luca Moretti had lived with one certainty.
His mother was gone.
A grave.
A memory.
A story everyone repeated until it became fact.
But now…
She was standing somewhere inside his home.
Alive.
Breathing.
Waiting.
The emergency lights flickered back on.
Slowly.
One by one.
The hallway appeared again.
And there she was.
A woman standing at the end of the corridor.
Older than the photograph.
Older than the memory Luca carried.
But unmistakably her.
Lucia Moretti.
Luca didn’t move.
Neither did she.
They simply stared at each other.
Two strangers connected by blood.
Separated by eighteen years.
“Luca.””
Her voice cracked.
His name.
Just his name.
That was all it took.
Something broke in his expression.
Not completely.
He was still Luca Moretti.
Still the man who controlled every emotion.
But I saw it.
A son who had waited his entire life for someone who was never supposed to return.
His lips parted.
“Mom?””
The word sounded strange coming from him.
Like he hadn’t used it in years.
Lucia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
One word.
And suddenly, the strongest man in the room looked like a child again.
Vanessa stepped back.
Teresa covered her mouth.
The silver-haired man lowered his head.
Everyone understood they were witnessing something private.
Something painful.
Luca took one step forward.
Then stopped.
“Is this real?””
Lucia nodded.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
The answer confused him.
“You wish you weren’t alive?””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“I wish you never had to learn the reason I left.””
Luca’s face hardened slightly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked around the room.
“Everyone keeps protecting me from the truth.””
His eyes returned to her.
“I’m tired of being protected.””
Lucia nodded slowly.
“You have every right to be angry.””
“Angry?””
His laugh was quiet.
Painful.
“I buried you.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“I know.””
“I visited your grave.””
“I know.””
“I spoke to a stone because I thought my mother was gone.””
Her shoulders shook.
“I know.””
Luca looked away.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then he asked the question he had been carrying all night.
“Why?””
Lucia closed her eyes.
Because she knew.
That was the question that mattered.
“Because your father made me disappear.””
The room went silent again.
Luca’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Like some part of him had already known.
“He killed you?””
Lucia shook her head.
“No.””
She looked down.
“He saved my life.””
Everyone froze.
Luca stared.
“What?””
Lucia walked slowly into the room.
“Your father wasn’t the villain you think he was.””
The words landed heavily.
Vanessa looked confused.
Even Elena looked surprised.
Luca’s voice became colder.
“Then explain.””
Lucia looked at the letter in his hand.
“He knew someone inside the family was trying to destroy him.””
Luca looked at Vanessa.
Then the silver-haired man.
Then Elena.
“Who?””
Lucia’s eyes moved toward the staircase.
Up.
Toward the rest of the mansion.
“Someone who had access to everything.””
A chill moved through me.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
Not an enemy outside the family.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Lucia continued.
“Your father discovered that Moretti Holdings was being drained from the inside.””
Luca frowned.
“By who?””
“He didn’t know at first.””
“But you did?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Lucia looked at Vanessa.
The room changed instantly.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“No.””
Lucia didn’t look away.
“I’m sorry.””
Luca turned toward Vanessa.
“You?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, Luca.””
Lucia stepped forward.
“Your father believed your mother’s family was involved.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The silver-haired man closed his eyes.
Like he had known this day would come.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You knew?””
He didn’t answer.
Her face changed.
“You knew.””
The man finally spoke.
“Your father made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You knew my entire family was connected to this, and you let me walk into this house?””
Luca looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Lucia took a breath.
“Your father and Vanessa’s father were partners.””
“We know that.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
Everyone waited.
“Your father wanted out.””
Luca frowned.
“Out of what?””
Lucia looked at him.
“The organization that helped build his empire.””
The word nobody wanted to say remained unspoken.
But everyone understood.
Luca’s company had not been built only with money.
It had been built with power.
And power always came with a price.
“Your father tried to leave,” Lucia continued.
“But people don’t leave easily.””
Luca looked at the letter.
“He hid the documents.””
“Yes.””
“In Caruso’s restaurant.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Lucia smiled sadly.
“Because Teresa was the only person he trusted completely.””
The older woman started crying.
“He came to me that night.””
Everyone looked at her.
“The night before he died.””
She nodded.
“He told me if anything happened, I had to protect the letter.””
Luca looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Teresa wiped her tears.
“Because he asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because he said the person who hurt him would come after you next.””
Silence.
Luca looked at Lucia.
“And you left me to protect me?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know it sounds impossible.””
“It sounds like you abandoned me.””
The words were quiet.
But they hurt more than shouting.
Lucia closed her eyes.
“I know.””
Luca looked away.
For the first time, I saw something other than anger.
Grief.
A grief that had been waiting eighteen years.
Lucia stepped closer.
“I watched you grow up.””
His eyes moved back to hers.
“What?””
“I was never far.””
The room went silent.
“You were there?””
She nodded.
“I saw your first business meeting.””
Luca froze.
“I saw you graduate.””
His expression changed.
“I saw you visit my grave.””
A tear finally escaped.
“I wanted to run to you every time.””
Luca looked broken.
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because every person who knew I was alive became a target.””
She looked at the hidden camera.
“At least, that’s what I believed.””
Luca frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lucia looked at Elena.
Then the silver-haired man.
Then Vanessa.
“I was wrong.””
A pause.
“Someone wanted me hidden.””
“Who?””
Lucia looked directly at Luca.
“Someone who benefited from my disappearance.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Luca’s phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
Everyone watched as he opened it.
One sentence.
No explanation.
No name.
Just a warning.
*IF YOU TRUST YOUR MOTHER, YOU WILL DIE LIKE YOUR FATHER.*
Luca stared at the screen.
Lucia saw it.
And her face changed.
Because she recognized the message.
“Who sent that?””
Luca looked at her.
“You know.””
She slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Lucia’s voice became barely audible.
“The person who has been controlling everything since the night your father died.””
Luca stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
She looked at everyone in the room.
Then whispered:
“The person who ordered your father’s murder…”
A pause.
“The person who made me disappear…”
Another pause.
“The person who is standing inside this mansion right now.””
Everyone turned.
Slowly.
Looking at one another.
Then Lucia pointed.
Not at Vanessa.
Not at the stranger.
Not at Elena.
At someone nobody expected.
Someone who had been there the entire night.
Someone who had never once been questioned.
May you like
And Luca’s face changed when he heard the name.
Because it was the last person he ever imagined betraying him.
