Chapter 2: The Signature on the Paper

“Vanessa…”

Luca Moretti said her name quietly.

But the room reacted as if he had shouted.

The folder in his hand remained open. His eyes stayed fixed on the final page, on the signature printed beneath the agreement that had just changed the entire evening.

Vanessa’s face lost its color.

“Luca, wait.””

He looked up slowly.

The man standing in front of her now was not the charming fiancé she smiled beside in photographs.

This was Luca Moretti—the man everyone in Chicago respected, feared, and rarely saw angry.

“What am I waiting for?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

The candles on the dining tables flickered behind us. The white roses Vanessa had carefully chosen suddenly looked artificial, like decorations in a room where something ugly had been uncovered.

I stood near the kitchen entrance, still holding the empty tray.

I should have left.

Employees were not supposed to stand in the middle of private arguments.

But nobody moved.

Not even the staff.

Not even Teresa.

Because everyone wanted to know the same thing.

What had Vanessa done?

Luca tapped the document with his finger.

“This agreement says Moretti Holdings purchased the building containing Caruso’s restaurant three weeks ago.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“It was an investment opportunity.””

“An investment opportunity?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You knew Teresa owned that restaurant.””

Vanessa crossed her arms, trying to recover her confidence.

“Of course I knew.””

The answer shocked me.

She didn’t even deny it.

Luca stared at her.

“Then why did you hide it from me?””

Vanessa looked around the room.

At the employees.

At Teresa.

At me.

Like she was calculating how much truth she could admit without losing control.

“Because you would have made an emotional decision.””

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“My emotional decision?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You have a habit of confusing loyalty with business.””

Teresa’s eyes widened.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

This woman had just described kindness like it was a weakness.

Luca lowered the folder.

“You purchased a building because of a restaurant my father loved.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I purchased a property. The restaurant was there.””

“Then why was Teresa’s eviction notice prepared the same day?””

Silence.

A terrible, heavy silence.

Vanessa looked away.

That was the answer.

Luca saw it too.

The man in the gray suit who had brought the folder cleared his throat.

“Mr. Moretti, there’s something else.””

Luca turned.

“What?””

The man opened another file.

“We found a second document.””

Vanessa’s eyes immediately snapped toward him.

“What document?””

The man hesitated.

“That’s exactly the problem.””

Luca held out his hand.

The document was passed over.

He read it.

His expression changed again.

This time, confusion replaced anger.

“What is this?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Luca looked at her.

“I asked you a question.””

She took a breath.

“It’s nothing.””

He laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe she thought he would accept that answer.

“Nothing has your signature on it.””

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Teresa.

She looked just as confused as I was.

Luca turned the page toward himself.

“You authorized the purchase.””

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“Yes.””

“Without my approval.””

“It was under my investment account.””

“But it used Moretti Holdings legal resources.””

She didn’t respond.

Luca looked down again.

Then he noticed something.

A small detail.

A tiny line at the bottom.

“What is this?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Luca noticed.

“What is this clause?””

She stepped forward.

“Luca, please.””

“No.””

His voice cut through the room.

“Explain.””

She looked uncomfortable for the first time since I had met her.

“The property had debt.””

“And?””

“And the restaurant was not profitable.””

Teresa lowered her head.

Luca looked at her.

“Teresa?””

The older woman spoke quietly.

“I was making enough to survive.””

“Were you?””

She nodded.

“Barely.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“That’s the point. It was a failing business.””

I looked at her.

“A failing business that your fiancé’s father loved?””

Her eyes turned toward me.

For a moment, I thought I had gone too far.

Then Luca spoke.

“Emma.””

I immediately straightened.

“Yes, Mr. Moretti?””

“Stay.””

The single word surprised me.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“Luca, this is unnecessary.””

He ignored her.

“Teresa.””

The older woman looked up.

“Yes?””

“Did anyone from my company speak to you before the eviction notice?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did anyone offer assistance?””

Another shake.

“No.””

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“You made sure she had no options.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From making a bad decision because of an old memory.””

Luca stared at her.

Then he walked toward the dining table and placed the folder down.

“My father had almost nothing when he started.””

Nobody spoke.

“He ate at Caruso’s when he couldn’t afford expensive restaurants. Teresa gave him food when he had no money.””

Teresa’s eyes filled with tears.

Luca continued.

“She didn’t ask who he was. She didn’t ask what he could become. She saw a hungry kid.””

His voice lowered.

“And you decided that memory was inconvenient.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re making this sound worse than it is.””

“No.””

Luca looked at her.

“You’re making it sound smaller than it is.””

The front door opened again.

This time, several guests entered.

They stopped immediately.

They had arrived expecting champagne and music.

Instead, they found silence.

A billionaire heir standing in the center of his mansion.

His fiancée looking like she had lost control of the room.

And an elderly woman holding a wooden spoon like it was the only thing she had left.

One of the guests whispered Vanessa’s name.

She turned quickly.

The embarrassment on her face transformed into anger.

“This is not the place for this conversation.””

Luca looked at her.

“You’re right.””

For one second, I thought he would let it go.

Then he said:

“It should have happened three weeks ago, before you destroyed someone’s livelihood.””

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You’re humiliating me.””

Luca stared at her.

“No.””

He glanced at Teresa.

“You did that yourself.””

The guests became silent.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to leave.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to admit they had witnessed something they were never supposed to see.

Teresa slowly stepped forward.

“Luca.””

He looked at her.

“I don’t want trouble.””

His expression softened.

“You should have come to me.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t think I had the right.””

Those words hit harder than anything else.

Luca looked genuinely hurt.

“Teresa, my father spent twenty years telling people your restaurant was family.””

The old woman smiled sadly.

“Your father was a good man.””

“He was.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“He would have hated seeing this.””

Luca looked at the papers again.

Then he turned to the man in the gray suit.

“Cancel the purchase.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can’t.””

Luca looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because the contract is already signed.””

“Then break the contract.””

“It will cost millions.””

He didn’t blink.

“I know.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You’re willing to lose millions over a restaurant?””

Luca looked at the tray sitting on the counter.

The empty tray.

The one that had started everything.

“No.””

His eyes moved back to Teresa.

“I’m willing to spend millions because someone tried to make me forget what mattered.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said something quietly.

Something that only a few people heard.

But I did.

And I knew immediately it was important.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Luca looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Her expression changed.

Fear appeared beneath her anger.

For the first time, Vanessa looked less like a woman in control.

And more like someone who knew a secret was about to come out.

“I didn’t buy that building because of the restaurant.””

Luca’s face became still.

“Then why?””

She hesitated.

The entire room waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I found something inside it.””

Luca stared.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Teresa.

Then at me.

Then back at Luca.

“A document your father left behind.””

The room went silent.

Luca’s expression changed.

“My father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He hid it in the restaurant.””

A chill moved through me.

Because whatever was inside that old restaurant…

Whatever Luca Moretti’s father had left behind…

Vanessa had not destroyed Caruso’s because she wanted a property.

She had destroyed it because she was searching for something.

Luca took one step toward her.

“What document?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Teresa suddenly gasped.

Her hand flew to her chest.

“Wait…”

Everyone turned.

The old woman looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“Teresa?”” Luca said.

She looked at him.

Then at Vanessa.

And whispered:

“Your father told me never to give that to anyone.””

Luca went completely still.

“Give what?””

Teresa’s fingers tightened around her wooden spoon.

“The letter.””

A cold silence filled the mansion.

“What letter?”” Luca asked.

The old woman’s eyes filled with fear.

May you like

“The one your father wrote the night before he died.””

And then the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
