Chapter 7: The Mother Behind the Locked Door

Six months.

Luca stared at the security footage.

Six months ago.

That was the part nobody could explain.

The woman in the video had walked through the Moretti mansion as if she knew every corner. She didn’t hesitate at the entrance. She didn’t look around nervously.

She belonged there.

Like the house had been waiting for her.

Luca replayed the footage.

Again.

And again.

The woman turned slightly toward the camera.

Even through the grainy image, there was no doubt.

She had his eyes.

The same dark eyes he saw every morning in the mirror.

The same eyes his father used to tell him were his mother’s greatest gift.

A memory.

Nothing more.

Because his mother had been dead.

At least, that was what he had believed.

“Stop it.””

Vanessa’s voice cut through the room.

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

Luca slowly turned.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I didn’t know she was here.””

“But you knew she was alive.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Luca looked away.

A person could survive anger.

Anger burned hot and disappeared.

But disappointment was different.

It stayed.

It settled.

It changed the way you saw someone forever.

“You were going to marry me.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

“And you knew my mother was alive.””

“I was trying to find out the truth.””

“No.””

Luca’s voice was cold.

“You were trying to control the truth.””

Vanessa flinched.

The silver-haired man stepped forward.

“Luca.””

He looked at him.

“What?””

“You need to understand something.””

“I’m tired of understanding.””

The man stopped.

Luca held up the tablet.

“For eighteen years, everyone around me decided what I was allowed to know.””

His eyes moved to Teresa.

“To my father.””

“To my mother.””

Then to Vanessa.

“And now I find out my fiancée was doing the same thing.””

Nobody spoke.

I watched Luca carefully.

The man everyone feared looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying a life that was never truly his.

Elena, the woman who had broken into the mansion, stood quietly near the wall.

Luca turned toward her.

“You said my mother has been watching me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena looked uncomfortable.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Of what would happen if you knew the truth.””

Luca laughed once.

“What truth?””

Elena looked at the letter still sitting on the table.

“The truth your father died trying to protect.””

Luca picked up the letter.

“Then tell me.””

“I can’t.””

His expression hardened.

“You broke into my house.””

“Yes.””

“You searched for something hidden by my father.””

“Yes.””

“You claim to know my mother.””

“Yes.””

“And now you’re telling me you can’t talk?””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“Not until she does.””

The room went silent.

Luca froze.

“She?””

Elena looked at him.

“Your mother.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because somehow, despite everything that had happened, Luca still wasn’t ready for those words.

He had spent eighteen years grieving a ghost.

And now that ghost had a voice.

A face.

A reason.

“When?””

Luca asked.

“When will I see her?””

Elena hesitated.

“Soon.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one I have.””

Luca stepped toward her.

“Where is she?””

Elena didn’t respond.

Then Luca’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

Again.

The same kind of call.

The room became completely silent.

Luca answered.

“Who is this?””

For a moment, there was only breathing.

Then a woman spoke.

A woman’s voice.

Older.

Soft.

Broken.

“Luca.””

His face changed.

I had never seen him react like that.

Not to anger.

Not to threats.

Not to betrayal.

His entire body froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Even after eighteen years.

“Who is this?””

The question came out almost like a whisper.

The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.

“I know you don’t remember me.””

Luca closed his eyes.

“Say your name.””

A pause.

Then:

“Lucia.””

The room disappeared.

At least for Luca.

I could see it happen.

The powerful businessman vanished.

The feared man vanished.

There was only a son hearing his mother’s name.

“Where are you?””

The woman didn’t answer.

“Luca, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Tell me where you are.””

“I need you to understand something first.””

“I spent eighteen years believing you were dead.””

Silence.

Then the woman whispered:

“I know.””

The pain in those two words was unbearable.

Luca gripped the phone tighter.

“Why?””

A long pause.

“Because your father made me disappear.””

Nobody moved.

Luca looked at Elena.

Then Teresa.

Then Vanessa.

Everyone had a different reaction.

But everyone believed the same thing.

His mother was alive.

And she had blamed his father.

“Why would he do that?””

The voice on the phone became quieter.

“Because I found out what he had done.””

“What did he do?””

“Luca…”

“What did he do?””

The woman breathed in.

Then said:

“He didn’t build Moretti Holdings.””

Luca closed his eyes.

The same words Elena had said.

The same warning.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying your father took something that wasn’t his.””

The room felt colder.

“What?””

“Everything.””

A pause.

“The company.””

“The money.””

“The name.””

Luca looked at the letter.

“My father left me the company.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“He left you a prison.””

Nobody spoke.

Luca’s hand trembled slightly.

“What does that mean?””

The woman didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“You need to find the original documents.””

“The ones hidden in Caruso’s?””

“Yes.””

“Vanessa was looking for them.””

Silence.

Then his mother said:

“Vanessa wasn’t the only one.””

Luca’s eyes moved toward the security camera footage.

“What?””

“There are people who have been waiting for those documents to appear.””

“Who?””

The woman’s voice became frightened.

“The people your father made deals with.””

“Names.””

“I can’t say them.””

“Why?””

“Because they’re listening.””

Everyone froze.

Luca looked around the room.

The mansion.

The security guards.

The cameras.

The walls.

“Who?””

The woman whispered:

“Look behind you.””

Luca turned.

Everyone followed his gaze.

At first, nothing happened.

Then I noticed it.

A small red light.

Blinking.

Near the bookshelf.

A camera.

Not one of the security cameras.

Something smaller.

Hidden.

Someone had been recording us.

The guard rushed toward it.

Luca’s expression became ice.

“How long?””

The guard checked.

Then looked up.

“Sir…”

“How long has that camera been here?””

The guard swallowed.

“We don’t know.””

Luca stared.

His mother spoke through the phone.

“I told you.””

Her voice shook.

“Your father’s enemies never left.””

Then the line went silent.

Luca looked at the phone.

“Mom?””

No answer.

“Mom.””

Nothing.

The call had ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Luca looked at the hidden camera.

And something inside him changed.

The confusion was gone.

The grief was gone.

What remained was determination.

He turned to the security team.

“Find every hidden device in this house.””

“Yes, sir.””

“Lock down every entrance.””

“Yes, sir.””

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She looked smaller now.

Less powerful.

More human.

“Tell me everything.””

She swallowed.

“I can’t.””

Luca stared at her.

“You’re still protecting someone.””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

And for the first time, she looked completely defeated.

“My father.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Luca went still.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“He was involved too.””

The room fell silent.

“Your father and mine.””

She looked down.

“They were partners.””

A pause.

“Until mine betrayed him.””

Luca stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked up.

“Because I was afraid if you knew…”

She stopped.

“Then what?””

Her voice broke.

“You would hate me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the security guard returned.

His face was pale.

“Mr. Moretti.””

Luca turned.

“What?””

“We found something else.””

“What?””

The guard held out a small envelope.

Old.

Dusty.

Hidden behind the wall near the camera.

Luca took it.

His name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

By someone who had known him his entire life.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His mother’s.

Luca opened his mouth.

But before he could open the envelope, the mansion lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

And in the darkness, a woman’s voice came from the hallway.

“Luca.””

Everyone froze.

Because it wasn’t from the phone.

It wasn’t from a recording.

It was real.

Standing somewhere inside the mansion.

May you like

The voice whispered:

“I’m sorry I left you.””
