Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in My Mother’s Name

The underground room felt like it had been holding its breath for thirty years.

And now that I was standing inside it…

Everything was finally ready to come out.

I stared at the documents spread across the old wooden desk.

My mother’s name.

My father’s name.

The Carter family crest stamped on papers that were supposed to have nothing to do with me.

My entire life had been built on a story that was missing pages.

And those missing pages were buried beneath a ranch in Texas.

Caleb stood beside me, frozen.

For the first time since I met him, he looked completely powerless.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Not cruel.

Just lost.

“My mother knew all of this?””

Nobody answered him.

Mason looked away.

William, who had followed us down moments later, stood at the bottom of the stairs.

His face told me he already knew what we had found.

“You knew,” I said.

It wasn’t a question.

William slowly walked into the room.

“I knew some of it.””

My anger returned immediately.

“Some of it?””

I picked up the marriage certificate.

“My mother was Rebecca Carter.””

William looked down.

“Yes.””

“My whole life I was Rebecca Hayes.””

He nodded.

“Because after everything happened, she and Daniel left.””

“Why?””

His eyes moved around the room.

Because this place held memories he didn’t want to touch.

“Because being a Carter became dangerous.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Dangerous enough that they changed their names?””

“Yes.””

“Dangerous enough that my father never told me?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents again.

“What exactly happened?””

William didn’t answer.

Then Mason spoke.

“Your mother was supposed to inherit everything.””

I turned.

“Everything?””

“The ranch.””

I looked around the room.

The hidden walls.

The old records.

The evidence everyone had fought to bury.

“But she gave it away.””

Mason nodded.

“She did.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t want power.””

His voice softened.

“She wanted a family.””

That sounded exactly like the mother I remembered.

Even though my memories were limited.

I remembered her hands.

Her voice.

The way she used to sing quietly while cooking.

She had never seemed like someone who wanted money.

She wanted peace.

“So why did Richard try to take it?””

William answered.

“Because he believed the ranch belonged to the Carter bloodline.””

I looked at Caleb.

His expression changed.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“My mother…”

He swallowed.

“She wasn’t the heir?””

“No.””

William shook his head.

“Your mother was not Rebecca’s child.””

Caleb stared.

“What?””

The silence was immediate.

“What are you saying?””

William looked at him.

“I’m saying Sarah was the rightful heir.””

My mind went back to the photograph.

My unknown sister.

The baby who disappeared.

Caleb’s face became pale.

“Sarah?””

I looked at him.

“You know that name?””

He nodded slowly.

“My mother used to say it.””

My heart started racing.

“What did she say?””

Caleb looked toward the floor.

“She said Sarah was the reason everything changed.””

The room went quiet.

“Why?””

He shook his head.

“She never explained.””

I picked up the photograph of Sarah.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody answered.

Then William spoke.

“She was taken.””

“By who?””

His silence returned.

But this time, I saw something.

Guilt.

“William.””

He closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“The night Sarah disappeared, everyone blamed Daniel.””

My hands tightened.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel was the last person seen with her.””

I stared at him.

“But he didn’t do it.””

“No.””

“How do you know?””

William looked at me.

“Because he spent the rest of his life trying to find her.””

The room became silent.

My father.

The man everyone accused.

The man who never talked about his past.

He wasn’t running away.

He was searching.

I looked at the hidden room.

At all the things he left behind.

Then I noticed something.

A small wooden box underneath the desk.

I reached for it.

William immediately reacted.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your father never wanted that opened unless…”

“Unless what?””

He looked at the box.

“Unless you knew the truth.””

My fingers froze.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Another one.

But this time, my father had written a date.

The day before he disappeared.

I unfolded it.

My Emily,

If you found this room, then William finally did what he promised.

He told you.

I stopped.

William looked away.

The letter continued.

I need you to know something.

I never abandoned you.

Not once.

My eyes burned.

I swallowed hard.

Your mother and I chose you.

We chose love over money.

But the Carters would never allow that.

I looked up.

The room suddenly felt colder.

The letter continued.

Sarah was taken because she was the first child.

You were hidden because you were the second.

They believed removing both of you would allow them to control everything.

My breath caught.

Both of us?

Sarah.

Me.

Someone had tried to erase both daughters.

I kept reading.

Emily, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

But I need you to find Sarah.

She is alive.

The paper shook in my hand.

Alive.

My sister was alive.

I looked up.

“She’s alive.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

I held up the letter.

“My father said Sarah is alive.””

William stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed it to him.

His eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then his expression changed.

“No…”

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“This date.””

“What about it?””

William looked at me.

“Daniel wrote this the day before he disappeared.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

William shook his head.

“But Sarah was reported dead years before that.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“That’s what everyone believed.””

I looked at the letter again.

My father knew.

He knew she was alive.

“Then where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Until Caleb spoke.

Quietly.

Almost afraid.

“I think I know.””

Everyone turned toward him.

His face was pale.

“My mother had an old photograph.””

“What photograph?””

He looked at me.

“Of a woman.””

“Who?””

Caleb swallowed.

“She always told me that woman was someone who saved our family.””

My heart pounded.

“What was her name?””

He looked toward the hidden room.

Then whispered:

“Sarah.””

The world stopped.

My sister had been here.

Near this family.

Near Caleb.

All these years.

I stepped closer.

“Where is the photograph?””

Caleb looked at me.

“I don’t have it.””

“Where is it?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“My mother kept it inside her old bedroom.””

I stared.

“Her bedroom?””

“Yes.””

“Here?””

Caleb nodded.

“In the Carter house.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

Because the truth wasn’t buried anymore.

It was still living with them.

I turned toward the stairs.

“We’re going there.””

William immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face was filled with fear.

“Because if that photograph still exists…”

He paused.

“And if Sarah really survived…”

I waited.

William’s voice dropped.

“Then the person who hid her all these years will know you found out.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Mason looked toward the staircase.

Because something outside had changed.

A sound.

Footsteps.

Someone above us.

Someone in the guest house.

We all froze.

Caleb whispered:

“We’re not alone.””

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from above.

A voice I recognized.

Richard Carter.

“Emily.””

My blood turned cold.

“How touching.””

A pause.

“You finally found your father’s little secret.””

William moved toward the stairs.

“Richard.””

Richard laughed.

“You really thought you could hide it forever?””

I looked up.

The man who had destroyed my family was standing above us.

And he said the words that made my entire body freeze.

“Your sister is alive, Emily.””

A pause.

“But she doesn’t remember you.””

May you like

The footsteps moved closer.

“And she’s been living under a different name for thirty years.””
