Chapter 6: The Night My Father Disappeared
I didn’t sleep.
Not after William’s last sentence.
The person who raised you wasn’t the only one who knew the truth.
Those words followed me everywhere.
Through the dark hallway.
Through the quiet ranch house.
Through every memory I had of my childhood.
Because suddenly, every memory felt like it had another meaning.
My father teaching me to ride.
My father refusing to talk about his past.
My father looking over his shoulder whenever we moved to a new town.
I had always thought he was just a private man.
A broken man.
A man trying to protect me from losing another parent.
Now I wondered if he had spent his entire life running.
I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the old photograph.
My mother.
My father.
The baby who was supposed to be my sister.
And me.
A family that existed before I even knew it.
A family someone destroyed.
A knock came at my door.
I didn’t answer.
The door opened anyway.
Caleb stood there.
For once, he looked unsure.
“I know you don’t want to see me.””
I looked away.
“That’s correct.””
He nodded.
Fair enough.
“I came to apologize.””
I almost laughed.
“Again?””
He stepped inside.
“The first apology wasn’t enough.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Because you only apologized after your father found out who my father was.””
That hit him.
Because it was true.
Caleb looked down.
“I was cruel to you.””
“You were.””
“I thought…”
He stopped.
“What?””
He sighed.
“I thought you were just another person trying to get close to my family.””
I stared at him.
“Why would you think that?””
“Because everyone wants something from the Carters.””
The bitterness in his voice surprised me.
“You sound like you hate your own family.””
He didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
I stood.
“My father’s life was destroyed because of yours.””
His eyes lifted.
“I know.””
“You knew?””
“Not everything.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“My mother told me stories.””
“About Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of stories?””
Caleb hesitated.
The same hesitation everyone had.
The same fear.
I stepped closer.
“Everyone keeps protecting the past.””
My voice became sharper.
“But nobody protected my father.””
Caleb looked at the floor.
“My mother said Daniel Hayes was dangerous.””
I froze.
“Dangerous?””
“She said he took something from our family.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She never told me.””
I studied his face.
For the first time, I believed him.
Because Caleb looked just as lost as I felt.
“Where is your mother?””
His expression changed.
“She died when I was sixteen.””
I softened slightly.
“I’m sorry.””
He nodded.
“She spent her last years telling me Carter Ranch was everything.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
He looked outside.
“Her whole identity was tied to this place.””
I thought about Margaret saying my mother gave it all up.
Someone had to be lying.
Maybe everyone was.
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A crash downstairs.
We both turned.
Then another sound.
A door opening.
Caleb moved first.
“Stay here.””
I almost smiled.
“Are you serious?””
He stopped.
“You really don’t know how to listen, do you?””
“Apparently not.””
For a second, the old Caleb appeared.
Then it disappeared.
He actually smiled.
Barely.
Then we walked downstairs together.
The living room lights were on.
William stood near the fireplace.
And in front of him was an old wooden box.
The same kind people used to store important documents.
His face was tense.
“What happened?””
I asked.
William looked at us.
“I found something.””
He opened the box.
Inside were papers.
Photographs.
Old records.
And a small cassette tape.
I stared.
“A tape?””
William nodded.
“Daniel left this.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you show me before?””
“Because I wasn’t sure it was safe.””
I looked at him.
“Safe?””
He looked toward the windows.
“Someone broke into my office tonight.””
Caleb immediately became serious.
“What?””
“They searched through everything.””
“Did they take anything?””
William looked at the box.
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because they were looking for this.””
The room became quiet.
I looked at the tape.
“My father recorded something?””
“Yes.””
William picked it up.
“But before I play it, you need to understand something.””
I crossed my arms.
“What?””
“Your father trusted very few people.””
He looked at me.
“And after tonight, I understand why.””
He placed the tape into an old player.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then…
A voice.
My father’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“William, if you’re hearing this, then I’m already gone.””
My breath caught.
Caleb looked at the floor.
The recording continued.
“I don’t know if Emily is with you.””
A pause.
“But if she is, I need you to tell her the truth.””
My eyes filled.
I had spent years wishing I could hear his voice again.
Now I was hearing it from a machine.
And every word hurt.
“Emily, if you’re listening…”
I covered my mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
A tear fell before I could stop it.
“I wanted to tell you everything.””
Static.
“But your safety mattered more than my honesty.””
William looked at me.
The recording continued.
“The Carter family was never the real danger.””
Everyone froze.
My father’s voice became quieter.
“The danger was someone who had access to you every day.””
My stomach tightened.
Someone close.
Someone who knew me.
Someone who raised me.
The tape crackled.
“I found proof that the person who took Emily’s identity also planned to erase her completely.””
I stopped breathing.
“Someone changed the records.””
William looked shocked.
Caleb looked at me.
“Identity?””
The recording continued.
“I tried to expose them.””
A pause.
“They found out.””
The room felt colder.
“On the night I disappeared, I was supposed to meet William at the old barn.””
William closed his eyes.
“I waited for him.””
The pain in his voice was obvious.
“But Daniel never arrived.””
The tape continued.
“Because someone followed me.””
I leaned closer.
“Someone who knew exactly where I would be.””
Static.
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
“It was someone who called me family.””
The tape stopped.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Caleb whispered:
“My mother…”
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“My mother knew Daniel.””
William looked at him.
“Caleb.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“She knew more than she told me.””
I stared at him.
“You think your mother did this?””
“I don’t know.””
His voice cracked.
“But there’s something I never understood.””
“What?””
Caleb looked at the old wooden box.
“When my mother died…”
He swallowed.
“She left me a letter.””
William stood still.
“What letter?””
Caleb looked at us.
“She told me if Daniel Hayes’ daughter ever came back…”
My heart started racing.
“What did she say?””
Caleb’s face went pale.
“She said…”
He stopped.
Like saying the words would make them real.
Then he whispered:
“Do not let her find the room beneath the ranch house.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked toward the floor.
The ranch house.
A hidden room.
Another secret.
Another piece of my father’s past.
William slowly turned toward the old staircase.
Because he already knew.
“There is no room beneath this house.””
Caleb looked at him.
“Yes, there is.””
William’s face changed.
“Caleb.””
“My mother showed me when I was a kid.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Caleb looked at me.
“Because she made me promise.””
I stared at him.
“Promise what?””
His eyes moved toward the floor.
“That I would never let Daniel Hayes’ daughter find what was hidden down there.””
A chill ran through me.
Because suddenly I knew.
May you like
Whatever was beneath Carter Ranch…
Was the reason my father disappeared.
