Chapter 5: The Daughter My Father Tried to Hide

The paper shook in my hand.

Not because of the wind.

Because of what I was seeing.

My name.

My birthday.

My mother’s name.

Everything looked familiar.

Except one detail.

The name written beneath mine.

The name I had never heard before.

Emily Carter.

I stared at it.

Then at Richard.

Then back at the document.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Richard smiled slightly.

“That’s what Daniel wanted you to believe.””

I looked at William.

“Is this real?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

My chest tightened.

“William.””

He looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Where did you get that?””

Richard laughed.

“Still avoiding the truth after all these years?””

William’s expression hardened.

“You have no right to talk about truth.””

“Neither did Daniel.””

The anger between them was so old that it filled the space around us.

Like they had been waiting decades for this moment.

I looked at Caleb.

He stood several feet away.

Watching.

Confused.

For once, he wasn’t acting like he owned the world.

He looked like someone watching his family collapse.

I turned back to Richard.

“What does this mean?””

Richard folded his arms.

“It means your father took you.””

My stomach dropped.

“Took me from who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That bothered me.

Because people who told the truth didn’t need to prepare themselves.

They just said it.

Finally, he said:

“From the Carter family.””

The silence that followed felt impossible.

I looked at William.

“That’s not true.””

William stepped forward.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“You’re still protecting him?””

“I’m protecting her.””

Richard laughed.

“You always were weak when it came to Daniel.””

William’s face tightened.

“Leave this ranch.””

“No.””

Richard looked around.

“This ranch belonged to my family before Daniel ever stepped foot on this land.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“It’s exactly what happened.””

I looked between them.

Two men.

Two versions of my past.

And I was trapped in the middle.

I held up the document.

“Someone explain this.””

Nobody spoke.

I raised my voice.

“Now.””

William took a breath.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I have spent my entire life hearing half-truths.””

My voice cracked.

“My father died without telling me anything.””

The words surprised me.

Because I hadn’t realized how much that still hurt.

“He taught me to trust people.””

I looked at the three men standing in front of me.

“And everyone here has been lying to me.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

William finally spoke.

“When you were born, your mother was sick.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“She was dying.””

I swallowed.

“My mother died when I was five.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you talking like you knew her?””

William closed his eyes.

“Because I did.””

The answer felt like another secret opening.

“Your mother’s name was Rebecca.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“She was my sister’s closest friend.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Richard interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

William ignored him.

“Rebecca worked at the ranch years ago.””

I stared.

“My mother worked here?””

“Yes.””

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“My father told me she met him at a horse show.””

William looked away.

“That was only part of the story.””

I felt sick.

My entire childhood was becoming a stranger.

“So what am I?””

Nobody answered.

Richard stepped forward.

“You’re the last person who should own anything connected to Carter Ranch.””

William’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful.””

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because she deserves to know.””

He pointed at the document.

“Emily, your mother was not just an employee here.””

My heartbeat increased.

“She was the legal heir to this ranch.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Before William took control, before this place became a business empire, your grandfather left everything through a family trust.””

William’s face became tense.

“Richard.””

“No more secrets.””

Richard looked at me.

“The trust named Rebecca’s first child as the rightful successor.””

I looked down at the document.

My hands went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

Richard smiled.

“Your father didn’t steal you.””

A pause.

“He stole your inheritance.””

The accusation hit harder than I expected.

Because suddenly everything had a different meaning.

My father leaving.

The secrecy.

The fear.

The warnings.

I wanted to believe Richard was lying.

I wanted to believe my father was innocent.

But I couldn’t ignore the fear in William’s eyes.

A sound came from behind us.

Margaret.

She had been standing near the ranch house.

Listening.

And she looked furious.

“Richard.””

He turned.

“Margaret.””

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

He smiled.

“I’m simply telling the girl what Daniel refused to.””

Margaret walked toward me.

“Emily, don’t listen to him.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he’s leaving out the part where he destroyed your family.””

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

Margaret’s voice became stronger.

“For thirty years, you controlled this story.””

She looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

I looked between them.

“Then tell me.””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Your mother did inherit the ranch.””

My heart sank.

“Then Richard is right?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Because your mother never wanted it.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She wanted a simple life.””

Margaret looked at William.

“She loved Daniel.””

William nodded.

“She chose him.””

I felt tears building.

Because that sounded like my mother.

I barely remembered her.

But I remembered her kindness.

Her patience.

Her belief that people mattered more than money.

“She gave up the ranch?””

“Yes.””

Margaret looked at the document.

“But Richard couldn’t accept that.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“You forged documents.””

The air became still.

Richard laughed.

“Careful.””

“You tried to take control of the trust.””

“You have no proof.””

William looked at him.

“Actually, I do.””

Richard’s smile faded.

William reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

Richard’s face changed.

“What is that?””

“Something Daniel left behind.””

I stared at the flash drive.

My father.

Again.

Even after all these years.

Still leaving pieces of the truth behind.

William looked at me.

“Your father knew one day this would happen.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

For the first time, William looked fearless.

“You took everything from him.””

He held the flash drive tightly.

“You won’t take this too.””

Richard’s expression became dangerous.

“This isn’t over.””

He turned toward me.

“You think William Carter is your protector?””

He smiled coldly.

“Ask him why your father died alone.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Richard walked back to his SUV.

“Ask him what happened the night Daniel disappeared.””

The engine started.

Nobody moved.

Until the vehicle disappeared down the driveway.

I turned slowly.

Toward William.

“Why did my father die alone?””

William looked away.

And that was when I knew.

There was one more secret.

One bigger than all the others.

“William.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Because the night Daniel disappeared…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Your father wasn’t running away.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what was he doing?””

William looked at the road where Richard had left.

“He was coming back for you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Coming back?””

William nodded.

“But someone made sure he never reached you.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

William’s face went pale.

May you like

Then he said:

“The person who raised you wasn’t the only one who knew the truth.””
