Chapter 9: The Sister Who Forgot My Name
Nobody moved.
Richard Carter stood at the top of the staircase like he owned the darkness itself.
Maybe that was the thing about people like him.
They didn’t need to shout.
They didn’t need to threaten.
They believed the world already belonged to them.
But for the first time, I saw something behind Richard’s confidence.
Fear.
Because he wasn’t angry that we found the room.
He was afraid of what else we might find.
“You know where Sarah is,” I said.
Richard smiled.
“I know many things.””
“Where is she?””
William stepped forward.
“Richard, this ends tonight.””
Richard looked at him.
“No, William.””
His smile disappeared.
“It ended thirty years ago.””
Caleb moved beside me.
His voice was low.
“Why did you lie to everyone?””
Richard looked at him.
“My own nephew.””
The disappointment in his voice sounded fake.
“You have no idea what you’re asking.””
Caleb’s expression hardened.
“I spent my whole life believing my mother was protecting this family.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“She was.””
“From who?””
Richard looked at me.
“From her.””
The answer made my blood boil.
“From me?””
“Yes.””
I stepped forward.
“You tried to erase my family.””
Richard’s face remained calm.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“No.””
I held up my father’s letter.
“You’re right.””
My voice became stronger.
“I don’t understand how someone can destroy two children’s lives just to control land.””
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
A small crack.
A moment of anger.
Then it was gone.
“You think this is about land?””
“What else would it be?””
Richard looked around the hidden room.
“This ranch was never just dirt and fences.””
He pointed toward the documents.
“It was legacy.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at William.
“At my mother.””
Then at the photographs.
“At my sister.””
Then back at Richard.
“It was always about control.””
Richard stepped down one stair.
“You’re young.””
His voice became softer.
“You still believe people do things because they are evil.””
He paused.
“People do terrible things because they believe they are right.””
I almost hated that the sentence sounded like something my father would say.
But then I remembered what Richard had done.
“What did you do to Sarah?””
Silence.
A long one.
Then Richard answered.
“I protected her.””
Nobody spoke.
“What?””
“She was a child.””
He continued.
“She was scared. Confused. Everyone around her was fighting over money and power.””
“That’s a lie.””
Richard looked at me.
“You weren’t there.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“But my father was.””
Richard’s face tightened.
“He chose you.””
The words came out bitter.
“He chose your mother.””
I froze.
“What?””
Richard looked at the old photograph.
“Rebecca was supposed to secure the future of Carter Ranch.””
William’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t.””
But Richard continued.
“She was supposed to marry into the Carter family.””
The room went silent.
My mother.
A Carter.
An heir.
A woman everyone wanted to control.
“But she chose Daniel.””
Richard laughed softly.
“And that destroyed everything.””
My stomach twisted.
“So you punished them.””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I corrected a mistake.””
The anger inside me became impossible to hide.
“You kidnapped a child.””
Richard’s expression remained cold.
“I saved a child from a war she didn’t understand.””
“By taking her away from her family?””
“She was given a better life.””
I stared at him.
“You stole her.””
Richard didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
Caleb looked sick.
“My mother knew?””
Richard looked at him.
“She helped.””
The words shattered something in him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My mother?””
Richard nodded.
“She raised Sarah.””
Caleb took a step back.
The room suddenly felt too small.
“My mother knew my entire life…”
His voice cracked.
“She knew who I was?””
Richard said nothing.
Caleb looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was quiet.
Real.
And somehow, that hurt more.
Because Caleb had spent months making my life miserable.
But now I realized he had been raised inside a lie too.
I looked at Richard.
“Where is she?””
Richard stared at me.
“Who?””
“Sarah.””
His expression became unreadable.
Then he smiled.
“You really want to meet her?””
“Yes.””
“You think she’ll welcome you?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
Richard walked down another step.
“She doesn’t know she’s Sarah Hayes.””
My heart sank.
“What did you tell her?””
“The truth she needed.””
“You mean the lie you created.””
He ignored me.
“She believes her parents died when she was young.””
My throat tightened.
“She has another family?””
“Yes.””
“Another name?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Richard looked toward the door.
“Why?””
I stared at him.
“Because she deserves to know she has a sister.””
Richard shook his head.
“She deserves peace.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“She deserves the truth.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Richard said:
“Fine.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Even William.
“What are you doing?”” William asked.
Richard smiled.
“Ending this.””
He reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a phone.
And pressed a button.
A video started playing.
At first, I heard only static.
Then a woman appeared.
Older.
Maybe around my age.
Standing in a garden.
Smiling.
My heart stopped.
Because even through the screen…
I saw it.
The eyes.
The same eyes as my mother.
The same eyes as mine.
“That’s…”
My voice disappeared.
Richard watched me.
“Your sister.””
I couldn’t look away.
Sarah.
Alive.
A real person.
Not a photograph.
Not a story.
Not a mystery.
My sister.
The woman in the video laughed at something someone off-camera said.
The sound hit me harder than I expected.
Because I realized something.
She had lived an entire life without me.
She had birthdays.
Memories.
Friends.
Maybe children.
And she never knew I existed.
The video ended.
Richard lowered the phone.
“She has no idea who you are.””
I looked at him.
“You’re going to tell her.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because she is happy.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Someone has to.””
Then he turned.
But before he reached the door, William spoke.
“You’re afraid.””
Richard stopped.
Everyone looked at him.
William continued.
“You’re not afraid Emily will find Sarah.””
A pause.
“You’re afraid Sarah will remember.””
Richard slowly turned.
And for the first time…
He looked genuinely afraid.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
William stared at Richard.
“Sarah didn’t lose her memories naturally.””
The room went silent.
My heart started racing.
“What are you saying?””
William’s voice became quiet.
“When Daniel found her years later…”
I held my breath.
“He discovered she had been told a different story.””
I looked at Richard.
“What story?””
William answered:
“That Daniel abandoned her.””
My eyes filled with anger.
“He made her hate my father?””
“Yes.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“Enough.””
But William continued.
“Daniel was close to bringing her home.””
I froze.
“When?””
“The night he disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
Richard stepped forward.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
William looked directly at him.
“I know Daniel called me that night.””
The room became silent.
“He said he found Sarah.””
I covered my mouth.
“And then?””
William looked at Richard.
“He said someone followed him.””
A pause.
“He said if anything happened…”
William looked at me.
“…the person responsible would be someone Sarah trusted.””
Richard’s face changed.
And suddenly, I understood.
The room.
The secrets.
The lies.
The missing sister.
Everything led back to one person.
Richard Carter.
But then Richard smiled.
And it scared me.
Because he didn’t look defeated.
He looked prepared.
“You still don’t understand.””
He pulled out another document.
“This is why Daniel lost.””
He handed it toward me.
I looked at the paper.
It was an official court record.
A name.
A signature.
A date.
My father’s name.
And beneath it…
A confession.
My hands started shaking.
Because the document claimed Daniel Hayes admitted to abandoning Sarah.
Richard leaned closer.
“Your father wasn’t the hero you think he was.””
I stared at the signature.
Something felt wrong.
Something familiar.
Then Caleb suddenly grabbed the paper.
His eyes widened.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He traced the signature with his finger.
“This isn’t my uncle’s proof.””
He looked at me.
“This is fake.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Caleb held up the document.
“My mother taught me handwriting analysis when I was young.””
He looked at Richard.
“She told me never to trust a signature without checking the pressure marks.””
Silence.
Caleb pointed.
“This was copied.””
Richard’s face finally lost control.
And for the first time…
Everyone saw the truth.
Richard Carter had not come to reveal a secret.
He had come to destroy the evidence.
Then Mason’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Emily…”
“What?””
His voice shook.
“They found Sarah.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Mason looked at me.
“At a hospital in Austin.””
A pause.
“But…”
I stepped closer.
“But what?””
Mason swallowed.
“She’s been asking about one thing for years.””
“What?””
May you like
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
“She’s been searching for the sister she was told never existed.””
