Chapter 7: The Room Beneath Carter Ranch

Nobody spoke for almost a minute.

The kind of silence that wasn’t peaceful.

The kind that meant everyone was thinking about the same terrifying possibility.

There was something beneath Carter Ranch.

Something my father died trying to protect.

Something Caleb’s mother had spent years hiding.

I looked at William.

“You knew about the room?””

His face immediately answered before his words did.

“No.””

Too fast.

Too defensive.

I stepped closer.

“William.””

He sighed.

“I knew there were rumors.””

“Rumors?””

“Yes.””

He looked toward the floor.

“Old ranches have stories. Hidden tunnels. Storage rooms. Things built decades ago.””

“And you never checked?””

“No.””

“Why?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because Daniel told me never to.””

The answer stopped me.

“My father told you?””

William nodded.

“The last time I saw him.””

I felt my heart tighten.

“The last time?””

“Yes.””

The room became colder.

William walked toward the fireplace and stared into the flames.

“Thirty years ago, Daniel came to me in the middle of the night.””

His voice became quieter.

“He looked terrified.””

I listened.

“Not scared for himself.””

William swallowed.

“Scared for you.””

I looked down.

“Me?””

“You were just a child.””

The thought hurt.

My father had spent his entire life carrying fear for me.

And I never knew.

“What did he say?””

William closed his eyes.

“He said someone inside the Carter family had discovered the truth about the inheritance.””

My breathing slowed.

“The inheritance?””

“The one Richard mentioned.””

William nodded.

“Your mother was supposed to inherit the ranch.””

I looked at the old documents.

“But she gave it up.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would anyone care?””

“Because your mother didn’t just inherit land.””

William looked at me.

“She inherited control.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“The original trust stated that whoever carried your mother’s bloodline had the final authority over Carter Ranch.””

I stared.

“So…”

William nodded.

“You.””

The word felt impossible.

Me.

The girl who arrived with one suitcase.

The girl cleaning stalls.

The girl Caleb hit with a rope.

I was apparently connected to everything.

I laughed quietly.

“This is insane.””

Nobody disagreed.

Because it was.

A knock suddenly came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

It was almost midnight.

Nobody visited Carter Ranch at that hour.

William motioned for Caleb to stay back.

He opened the door slowly.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Wearing a dark jacket.

His face was familiar.

I had seen him before.

At the ranch.

One of the longtime workers.

Mason.

William looked surprised.

“Mason?””

Mason glanced behind him.

Then stepped inside.

“I need to talk to Emily.””

My guard immediately went up.

“Why?””

Mason looked nervous.

“Because your father saved my life.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“My father?””

He nodded.

“I was nineteen when I started working here.””

He looked at William.

“Back when Daniel was still here.””

William’s expression softened.

“Mason…”

“I should have told the truth years ago.””

He looked at me.

“But I was afraid.””

“Afraid of who?””

Mason didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

I was getting tired of patterns.

“Who?””

He looked toward the ceiling.

“Richard Carter.””

My stomach tightened.

Of course.

Always Richard.

“What did he do?””

Mason sat down slowly.

“Your father discovered Richard was moving money through fake ranch accounts.””

William’s jaw tightened.

“I knew he was stealing.””

Mason looked at him.

“You didn’t know everything.””

William became still.

“What are you talking about?””

Mason reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small key.

An old metal key.

“I found this the night Daniel disappeared.””

My eyes locked onto it.

“What is it?””

Mason looked at me.

“The room beneath the ranch.””

Nobody moved.

William stared at the key.

“Where did you get that?””

Mason looked ashamed.

“Daniel gave it to me.””

The room exploded with questions.

“Why?””

“What was inside?””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Mason raised his hand.

“Because Daniel made me promise.””

I felt frustration building.

“Everyone made promises.””

My voice cracked.

“And everyone stayed silent.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew.

Mason looked at me sadly.

“You’re right.””

He placed the key on the table.

“I was a coward.””

I picked it up.

It was heavier than it looked.

“Where is the room?””

Mason looked toward the hallway.

“Under the old guest house.””

William immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I turned.

“No?””

“It’s dangerous.””

I almost smiled.

“Dangerous?””

I held up the key.

“My father disappeared because of this room.””

William stepped closer.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I spent my whole life believing my father abandoned parts of himself because he wanted to.””

My voice became stronger.

“But now I know he was trying to leave me clues.””

I looked around the room.

“At some point, someone decided I didn’t deserve the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

“So I’m finding it.””

Caleb watched me carefully.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“I’ll go with you.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because if there is something under this ranch that my family hid…”

He paused.

“I need to know too.””

For once, Caleb wasn’t trying to control the situation.

He was trying to understand it.

We walked across the ranch twenty minutes later.

The moon was high.

The old guest house sat at the edge of the property.

Nobody used it anymore.

The windows were covered in dust.

The wooden door was barely attached.

Mason unlocked it.

The key turned with difficulty.

Inside was darkness.

The smell of old wood filled the air.

Caleb turned on his flashlight.

“There’s nothing here.””

Mason walked to the back wall.

“Yes, there is.””

He moved an old cabinet aside.

Behind it was a wooden panel.

My heart started racing.

A hidden door.

Exactly like the stories.

Caleb stared.

“My mother knew about this.””

Mason nodded.

“She did.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

His expression changed.

“Because she was there the night Daniel found it.””

The key entered the lock.

The door opened.

A narrow staircase disappeared into the darkness below.

Nobody moved.

Then Caleb whispered:

“My mother never wanted me to come down here.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He stared into the darkness.

“Because she told me what was inside would destroy the Carter family.””

I stepped onto the first stair.

The wood creaked.

Then another.

And another.

At the bottom was a small underground room.

A desk.

A shelf.

A locked metal cabinet.

And on the wall…

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

My heart stopped.

Because every photograph showed the same thing.

My father.

My mother.

Sarah.

And a fourth person.

A young woman I had never seen.

Caleb moved closer.

“Who is she?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

I had seen her face before.

In the old family portraits.

In pictures around the ranch.

The woman standing beside William’s family.

The woman everyone called a Carter.

I touched the photograph.

And read the handwritten note beneath it.

My fingers went cold.

Because the name written there was:

Rebecca Carter.

My mother.

Not Rebecca Hayes.

Rebecca Carter.

Then I saw another document sitting on the desk.

A birth record.

Not mine.

Sarah’s.

And beside it was another paper.

A marriage certificate.

My father’s name.

My mother’s name.

And one sentence written across the bottom:

*This marriage was hidden to prevent the Carter bloodline from taking control of the ranch.*

I looked up slowly.

Caleb was reading over my shoulder.

His face had lost all color.

Because he finally understood.

His voice came out as a whisper.

“My mother wasn’t protecting the ranch from your father.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“She was protecting the ranch from you.””
