Chapter 9: The Plan That Started Before the Wedding

The photograph stayed on my screen.

Adrian.

Elena.

The clinic.

Six years earlier.

Before the wedding.

Before the promises.

Before Elena ever stood beside me and told me she wanted to build a family.

My mind struggled to process the timeline.

I had spent years believing Elena entered my life after tragedy.

After Isabella’s death.

After Luca needed someone.

But the truth was something else entirely.

She had been watching my family before I ever knew her name.

“Victor?””

Daniel’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

“What?””

“You need to think carefully.””

I stared at him.

“About what?””

“About who sent this message.””

I looked at the unknown number.

“You think it’s a trap?””

“I think everyone connected to this has been planning ahead.””

He was right.

Every discovery led to another door.

Every door revealed someone waiting behind it.

But one thing was becoming impossible to ignore.

Elena had not accidentally become part of my life.

She had entered it with information.

With a purpose.

With a plan.

I saved the photograph.

Then I turned to Dr. Hart.

“Doctor, I need everything you have.””

His face tightened.

“I cannot release private records.””

I placed the original DNA report on the desk.

“You already know what was done here.””

He looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

My voice softened slightly.

“But now you have a chance to correct them.””

He stayed silent.

Then he opened a locked cabinet.

He removed a small storage device.

“I kept copies.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Of what?””

“Everything related to Adrian’s requests.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Why?””

The doctor stared at the floor.

“Because after he left, I realized he wasn’t looking for the truth.””

He looked at me.

“He was looking for a weapon.””

The words stayed with me.

A weapon.

That was exactly what Luca had become.

Not a child to them.

Not a person.

A weakness they could use.

A reason to control me.

We returned to the estate after midnight.

The house was dark.

Quiet.

But it no longer felt peaceful.

It felt like a place where secrets waited in every room.

Marcus stayed downstairs reviewing security logs.

Daniel began organizing the documents.

I went upstairs.

Luca was asleep.

I stood in the doorway for a long time.

Watching him.

The same boy I had doubted.

The same boy I had failed.

My son.

A small person who had spent months carrying a burden created by adults.

I sat beside his bed.

His eyes opened slightly.

“Dad?””

“I’m here.””

He rubbed his face.

“Did you find out?””

I hesitated.

Children deserve honesty.

But they also deserve protection from things too heavy for them.

“I found out that you were right.””

His eyes opened wider.

“About Elena?””

I nodded.

He looked away.

Not happy.

Not relieved.

Just tired.

“I knew.””

The words hurt.

“What do you mean?””

“I knew nobody believed me.””

I reached for his hand.

“I believe you now.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“You do?””

He nodded.

“Because you’re scared too.””

The truth of that statement caught me off guard.

“Yes.””

He squeezed my hand.

“Mom used to say being scared doesn’t mean you’re weak.””

I smiled sadly.

“She was right.””

After he fell asleep again, I returned downstairs.

Marcus was waiting.

“You need to see this.””

He had a laptop open.

On the screen were security records.

“What is it?””

“I traced the messages.””

“From Elena?””

“No.””

He turned the computer.

“The anonymous sender.””

A location appeared.

My eyes narrowed.

“Where is that?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The old Romano guesthouse.””

I froze.

The guesthouse.

An abandoned property on the edge of the estate.

It had been closed for years.

No one used it.

“How?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Show me.””

We drove there immediately.

The building was dark and covered in dust.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

But when Marcus opened the door, we discovered something impossible.

Someone had been living there.

A small lamp was still warm.

A cup of coffee sat on the table.

Fresh.

Someone had left only minutes earlier.

I walked deeper inside.

On the wall were photographs.

Hundreds of them.

My family.

Luca.

Isabella.

Me.

Elena.

I stepped closer.

Most were ordinary pictures.

But some had notes written beside them.

Dates.

Locations.

Observations.

My stomach turned.

This wasn’t a collection.

It was surveillance.

Marcus whispered:

“Victor.””

I turned.

He pointed toward the desk.

A folder sat there.

My name was written on it.

Inside were documents.

Not financial documents.

Not legal documents.

Reports.

About me.

About Luca.

About Isabella.

The first page had a title:

*Romano Family Assessment.*

I read the first line.

*Subject: Victor Romano.*

*Weaknesses identified: grief, guilt, fear of losing his son.*

My hands tightened.

I turned the page.

*Subject: Luca Romano.*

*Primary emotional dependency: father approval.*

*Recommended strategy: create distrust between father and child.*

I felt sick.

They had studied my son.

They had analyzed him.

They had planned how to hurt him.

Marcus looked over my shoulder.

“This is criminal.””

I kept reading.

Then I found something that made me stop.

A section dated before Isabella died.

Before Elena entered my life.

The heading read:

*Phase One: Preparation.*

I turned the page.

There were names.

Adrian.

Elena.

And someone else.

Someone I had not expected.

I read it again.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

The third name belonged to Isabella.

No.

Impossible.

I dropped the folder.

Marcus picked it up.

“Victor…”

“She was framed.””

I said it immediately.

Because I knew my wife.

I knew her heart.

I knew the person she was.

But then I saw the evidence.

The documents.

The planning.

The dates.

My confidence wavered.

Marcus looked at me.

“There has to be another explanation.””

I nodded.

“There has to be.””

Then something moved upstairs.

We both froze.

Someone was inside.

Marcus immediately reached for his flashlight.

We moved silently.

The footsteps stopped.

A door creaked.

I stepped forward.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A woman’s voice.

“I knew you would find this eventually.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

Isabella.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

A person.

Alive.

Standing in front of me.

The light moved.

And there she was.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably Isabella.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

Marcus lowered his flashlight.

“Impossible.””

Isabella looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Victor.””

My entire world tilted.

“No.””

She took a step closer.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I tried to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You died.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked between us.

“Victor…”

But I couldn’t hear him.

Because the woman I buried years ago was standing in front of me.

And she was holding the same folder that had destroyed everything I believed.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Isabella cried.

“Because Adrian made sure everyone believed I was gone.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at the documents.

Then at me.

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

My blood ran cold.

She stepped closer.

“And Elena wasn’t the person who started this.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

“Then who was?””

Isabella looked toward the folder.

Toward the names.

Toward the years of lies.

Then she whispered:

“The person who planned all of this has been standing beside you from the beginning.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Who?””

Isabella looked directly at me.

May you like

And said the one name I was not prepared to hear.

“Your father.””
