The Plate Beneath His Bed / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Person I Let Inside

The signature stared back at me from the document.

A few black lines of ink.

A few seconds of silence.

And suddenly, years of memories began rearranging themselves into something darker.

The person listed as my emergency successor was not Adrian.

Not Elena.

Not even someone from my legal team.

It was Marcus Hale.

My head of security.

My friend.

The man who had protected my family.

Or at least, the man I believed had.

I looked at him across the office.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

“Marcus.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

He closed his eyes.

“Victor.””

“No.””

I held up the document.

“Explain this.””

Daniel quietly stepped away, giving us space.

Marcus looked older suddenly.

Not because of his age.

Because the truth had finally caught up with him.

“I can explain.””

“Good.””

I placed the paper on the desk.

“Because right now, I don’t understand how the man I trusted to protect my son was preparing to control everything I own.””

Marcus looked toward the floor.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

Those words made something inside me snap.

“Like what?””

He looked up.

“Like you finding out this way.””

I stared at him.

“You still don’t understand, do you?””

His expression tightened.

“You betrayed me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus said the words I never expected to hear.

“I was trying to save you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pointed at the document.

“You were trying to replace me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then tell me why your name is here.””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Victor, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel tapped the document.

“This authorization was prepared before the updated estate plan.””

“So?””

“So someone wanted this ready before your new protections were added.””

My eyes moved back to Marcus.

“When?””

Daniel checked the paperwork.

“Eight months ago.””

Eight months.

Before the garden party.

Before the hidden plate.

Before Luca started withdrawing into himself.

The betrayal wasn’t a sudden decision.

It had been building.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Inside my own home.

I turned to Marcus.

“Why?””

He looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

Marcus wasn’t afraid of being caught.

He was afraid of admitting why.

“Tell me.””

His shoulders dropped.

“Adrian approached me.””

The room became still.

My brother’s name hung between us.

“What did he say?””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“He said you were making mistakes.””

I laughed once.

“Mistakes?””

“He said the company was too much pressure. That you were distracted. That after Isabella died, you weren’t thinking clearly.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you believed him?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I believed some of it.””

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I saw you struggling.””

The words landed harder because there was truth hidden inside them.

I had struggled.

After Isabella’s death, I had spent months barely sleeping.

I missed meetings.

I forgot important dates.

I cried alone in my office because I didn’t want Luca to see me falling apart.

But struggling did not mean I was weak.

And it certainly did not mean someone else had the right to take control.

Marcus continued.

“Adrian told me he was worried about you.””

“Of course he did.””

“He said if something happened to you, the company and your assets would become vulnerable.””

“And you thought the solution was to put yourself in charge?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then what?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I thought I was creating a safety net.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“A safety net that gave you legal authority over his finances.””

Marcus said nothing.

The silence was enough.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the courtyard looked peaceful.

The same courtyard where my son had been humiliated.

The same courtyard where people laughed while he stood alone.

I wondered how many times I had looked at that place and seen only what I wanted to see.

“Did Elena know?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“How long?””

“A few months.””

“So the two of them were working together.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not at first.””

I turned.

“Explain.””

He hesitated.

“Adrian was the first person who convinced me there was a problem. Elena became involved later.””

“How?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“She asked questions.””

“What kind of questions?””

“About Luca.””

My stomach tightened.

“What questions?””

“She asked whether Luca would inherit everything.””

I felt a chill.

“She was worried about my son inheriting his own family’s money?””

Marcus looked down.

“She said Luca was too young. That he needed guidance.””

I walked back toward the desk.

“And you listened.””

“I thought she was being protective.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“She was planning.””

Marcus didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

The evidence was already everywhere.

Daniel opened another file.

“There’s something else you need to see.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He placed several printed pages on the desk.

“Financial records.””

I scanned the first page.

Transfers.

Large amounts.

Repeated payments.

“Where did these come from?””

“An account connected to Elena.””

I looked closer.

The transfers weren’t random.

They were monthly.

Consistent.

“Who sent this money?””

Daniel paused.

“Adrian.””

My brother.

Again.

“How much?””

Daniel gave me a number.

I stared.

Enough money to buy loyalty.

Enough money to silence questions.

Enough money to make people forget what was right.

Marcus looked at the records.

“I didn’t know about that.””

I looked at him.

“Didn’t you?””

He flinched.

That reaction told me more than words.

“You suspected.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

“I saw unusual activity.””

“And?””

“I didn’t investigate.””

The disappointment I felt was almost unbearable.

Because Marcus wasn’t a stranger.

Strangers betray you because they don’t care.

People like Marcus betray you because they know exactly where to hurt you.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

A message appeared.

From Elena.

*Where are you?*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message came.

*Luca told me you were upset. We need to talk.*

Daniel looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

I ignored him.

A third message arrived.

*Victor, please. Don’t let him manipulate you.*

My blood ran cold.

She was still doing it.

Even now.

She was still making Luca the problem.

I typed slowly.

*Come to my office.*

Marcus looked surprised.

“Victor.””

“I need her here.””

“Why?””

I looked at the hidden plate sitting on the desk.

“Because I want to hear her lie to my face.””

Twenty minutes later, Elena entered the office.

She looked calm.

Perfect.

Not a single strand of hair out of place.

She smiled when she saw me.

Then she noticed Daniel.

Then Marcus.

The smile disappeared.

“What is this?””

I didn’t answer.

I placed the security footage on the screen.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You watched the recording.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was a realization.

I stood.

“You knew about the cameras.””

Elena said nothing.

“You knew there was a chance someone would see.””

She folded her arms.

“Victor, you’re misunderstanding what happened.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She stepped forward.

“Luca has been struggling. You know that.””

I stared at her.

“You’re still blaming him.””

“I’m explaining.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You’re protecting yourself.””

Her expression shifted.

For the first time, the mask slipped.

“You need to calm down.””

There it was.

The same tone.

The same gentle voice.

The same way she had made me doubt myself for years.

But this time, I saw it clearly.

“You and Adrian.””

Her face went still.

“What about Adrian?””

I watched her carefully.

“You’ve been working together.””

A second passed.

Two.

Then she smiled.

Not a warm smile.

A careful one.

The kind someone gives when they realize they still have a move left.

“Victor,” she whispered.

“You have no idea what you’re accusing me of.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain the documents.””

Her eyes moved to Marcus.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

She wasn’t surprised by the documents.

She was surprised Marcus had shown them.

And then she said something that made the entire room freeze.

“You should ask Marcus why Adrian paid him.””

Marcus went pale.

I turned.

“What?””

Elena smiled faintly.

“You think he was helping you?””

She looked directly at me.

“He wasn’t.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What are you talking about?””

Elena reached into her purse.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And pulled out her phone.

She unlocked it.

Then placed it on the desk.

A message thread was open.

At the top was Marcus’s name.

My eyes moved down.

And I saw a conversation between them.

A conversation dated months earlier.

A conversation that proved Marcus had not simply been watching the plan.

He had been part of it.

Then Elena pointed at the screen.

“Ask him why he told me your son needed to be removed from the estate.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

May you like

And for the first time since I had known him…

He looked afraid.
