The Plate Beneath His Bed / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Message Hidden in Plain Sight

I looked at Marcus.

Then at Elena’s phone.

Then back at Marcus.

The room felt like it had stopped breathing.

For years, I had trusted Marcus with my family’s safety.

I had given him access to every door, every camera, every security protocol in the Romano estate.

I had believed there was no one in the world who would protect Luca more than he would.

Now Elena was standing in front of me, accusing him of helping destroy my son’s life.

And Marcus wasn’t denying it.

That was the part that hurt most.

“Victor,” Marcus said quietly.

I raised my hand.

“No.””

His mouth closed.

I couldn’t hear another explanation.

Not yet.

Because every time someone spoke in this house, I discovered another lie hiding underneath.

I picked up Elena’s phone.

The message thread filled the screen.

Marcus’s name appeared at the top.

The first message was from eight months earlier.

*Marcus: We need to discuss the boy.*

The response came from Elena.

*Elena: I told you. Victor will never believe anything negative about Luca.*

I scrolled.

My heart became heavier with every line.

*Marcus: That’s why we need patience.*

*Elena: Patience won’t matter if he keeps choosing the child.*

My fingers stopped.

The child.

Not Luca.

The child.

As if my son was an obstacle.

A problem.

Something standing between them and what they wanted.

I kept reading.

*Marcus: I can create doubts.*

*Elena: How?*

*Marcus: Records. Behavior reports. Incidents. Anything that makes Victor question his judgment.*

The room went silent.

I looked up.

Marcus’s face had lost all color.

“Is this real?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

His eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Elena crossed her arms.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“I understand that you both lied.””

Her expression tightened.

“That’s unfair.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.

“Unfair?””

I held up the phone.

“You fabricated messages. You isolated my son. You made me believe he was unstable.””

“I never hurt him.””

The speed of her answer made me turn.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I disciplined him.””

“By throwing away his dinner?””

“He was behaving badly.””

“He was nine.””

“He needed boundaries.””

I stared at her.

There it was.

The thing she had always hidden behind.

A word that made cruelty sound reasonable.

Discipline.

Boundaries.

Responsibility.

She had wrapped everything in the language of being a good parent.

But good parents did not make children afraid to speak.

Good parents did not make children wonder if they belonged in their own home.

I turned to Marcus.

“Why?””

He looked away.

“Because Adrian convinced me.””

I laughed quietly.

“Again.””

“No, Victor.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“This time you need to listen.””

I almost walked away.

Then he said something that stopped me.

“Because Adrian told me Isabella left a letter.””

My entire body froze.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“A letter.””

My voice dropped.

“What letter?””

“The one she wrote before she died.””

The room changed.

Isabella.

Even after all these years, her name still carried a weight nothing else could.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Isabella never wrote a letter.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She did.””

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

“She gave it to Adrian.””

My brother.

Again.

I took a step back.

“Why would he have it?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe my brother kept something from me for years?””

Marcus looked at Elena.

Then back at me.

“Yes.””

The answer was terrifying.

Because deep down, I already knew Adrian was capable of hiding things.

But not this.

Not something from Isabella.

Not something that involved Luca.

“What was in the letter?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Adrian said Isabella was worried about Luca.””

My chest tightened.

“About what?””

“That you were too protective.””

The words felt like an insult.

My wife.

The woman who loved our son more than anything.

Would she really write that?

Would she really say I was failing him?

“I don’t believe you.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to say you understand.””

My voice cracked.

“You used my grief against me.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“I was wrong.””

“You were more than wrong.””

I looked at the message thread.

“You helped them build a case against my son.””

He whispered:

“Yes.””

A heavy silence followed.

Then Elena spoke.

“Victor, you’re ignoring the bigger issue.””

I turned toward her.

“What could possibly be bigger?””

She looked calm again.

Too calm.

“The company.””

I stared.

“What?””

She sighed.

“This isn’t just about Luca.””

That sentence made my stomach turn.

Because it confirmed everything.

She was not defending herself.

She was changing the subject.

“This was never about my son to you.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

She stepped closer.

“You think Adrian and I wanted Luca gone because we hated him.””

“Didn’t you?””

“No.””

Her eyes hardened.

“We wanted stability.””

I almost laughed.

“You wanted control.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Daniel, who had been silent through the confrontation, finally spoke.

“Victor.””

I looked at him.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

He glanced toward the window.

“Because if they know we found this much, they may move faster.””

Elena smiled faintly.

“You’re already too late.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She picked up her phone.

“You really think Adrian would wait around after knowing you changed your mind about Luca?””

My heart dropped.

“What did he do?””

She didn’t answer.

“Where is Adrian?””

No response.

“Where is my brother?””

Elena smiled.

“I think you should ask your security team.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

Daniel stepped toward the desk.

“Check the cameras.””

Marcus immediately moved.

His hands flew across the keyboard.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I walked closer.

“What happened?””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“The east gate camera.””

“What about it?””

“It was disabled.””

“When?””

He looked at the timestamp.

“Ten minutes ago.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Who entered?””

Marcus checked.

His face changed.

“No one.””

“That’s impossible.””

He looked again.

Then opened another screen.

“Victor…”

“What?””

“The gate wasn’t disabled.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Then what?””

He turned the monitor toward me.

“The footage was deleted.””

A silence followed.

Someone had accessed the security system.

Someone had removed evidence.

Someone who knew exactly how the estate worked.

Marcus whispered:

“Only someone with administrator access could do this.””

I looked at him.

Then at Elena.

Then at the screen.

There were only two people who had that level of access.

Marcus.

And me.

But Marcus had just been standing in front of me.

Which meant someone else had stolen his credentials.

Or someone had been using them.

“Find out what was deleted,” I ordered.

Marcus nodded and began typing.

Seconds passed.

Then minutes.

Finally, a file appeared.

A single video.

Recorded from a hidden camera near the private office.

The timestamp was from earlier that night.

I pressed play.

The footage showed Adrian entering my office.

Alone.

He opened my desk drawer.

Removed a folder.

Then looked directly toward the camera.

Like he knew it was there.

Like he knew someone would eventually see it.

Then he smiled.

My blood went cold.

Because Adrian wasn’t surprised.

He wasn’t nervous.

He looked completely confident.

Then he placed something on my desk before leaving.

The camera zoomed in.

A small envelope.

With my name written across the front.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Victor…”

I stared.

The envelope had been hidden in my office for hours.

Waiting for me to find it.

I reached for the door.

“I’m going there.””

Marcus stood.

“Victor, wait.””

But I was already moving.

Because after everything I had learned tonight, one question remained.

May you like

Why would my brother leave me a message?

And why did the envelope contain a single sentence written in Isabella’s handwriting?
