Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Door

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The phone remained pressed against my ear.

But I heard nothing.

Not Marcus.

Not the faint hum of the house.

Not even my own breathing.

Only one thought repeated in my mind.

*Isabella.*

My wife.

The woman I had loved.

The woman who had warned me about trusting people.

The woman whose handwriting was on the letter sitting in my office.

How could she be connected to the very thing we were trying to uncover?

“Victor?”” Marcus said.

I forced myself to answer.

“Play it.””

A pause.

“What?””

“The footage.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

“Play it.””

I ended the call and looked at Luca.

He was watching me.

He knew.

Children always know when something changes.

“What happened?””

I walked toward him.

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

The words felt terrible coming out.

Because I had spent years saying things like that.

Nothing to worry about.

Everything is fine.

Don’t think about it.

And every time, something was wrong.

So I corrected myself.

“I don’t know what happened yet.””

Luca studied me.

“Is it about Mom?””

My silence answered.

His face changed.

“Dad?””

I sat beside him.

“I need to check something.””

“Is she in trouble?””

The question broke my heart.

Because even after everything, Luca’s first instinct was not fear for himself.

It was fear for her.

“No.””

I placed my hand over his.

“Your mom isn’t in trouble.””

Technically, it was true.

Isabella had been gone for years.

But the secrets she left behind were alive.

And they were finally speaking.

I went downstairs.

Marcus was waiting in the security room.

The moment I entered, he turned the monitor toward me.

“I isolated the footage.””

The screen showed an old recording.

The date appeared in the corner.

Three years earlier.

Before Isabella died.

Before Elena entered our lives.

Before any of this began.

The footage showed the east archive hallway.

A place I barely remembered.

The old family records room.

The room where we stored legal documents, financial histories, and personal files.

Then a figure appeared.

A woman.

She wore a dark coat.

Her hair was tied back.

She walked slowly toward the archive door.

My heart started racing before I even saw her face.

Because I knew the way she moved.

I knew the way she carried herself.

The way she tilted her head slightly when she was thinking.

The camera angle changed.

Her face appeared.

Isabella.

I stepped closer.

“No.””

Marcus watched me carefully.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

The footage continued.

Isabella unlocked the archive door.

She looked around.

Then someone else entered.

My brother.

Adrian.

I felt sick.

They weren’t arguing.

They weren’t fighting.

They were talking calmly.

Like this was planned.

Marcus paused the footage.

“Victor.””

“Play it.””

“There’s no audio.””

“Play it.””

He pressed the button.

The silent video moved again.

Isabella handed Adrian a folder.

Then she pointed toward the documents inside.

Adrian looked surprised.

Then angry.

He said something.

Isabella responded.

She shook her head.

Then Adrian left.

Isabella stayed behind.

She watched him walk away.

And the expression on her face was something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

I stepped back.

“She wasn’t helping him.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What?””

“She was afraid of him.””

We watched the footage again.

This time, I wasn’t looking for betrayal.

I was looking for the truth.

And there it was.

In the smallest details.

The way Isabella kept distance between them.

The way she never turned her back completely.

The way she held the folder tightly after Adrian left.

She wasn’t giving him something.

She was trying to take something back.

“Zoom in on the folder.””

Marcus enlarged the image.

The quality was poor.

But enough remained visible.

A label.

A word.

*Inheritance.*

My stomach tightened.

“Find that folder.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Victor—”

“Find it.””

He nodded.

He searched the archive database.

After a minute, his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked confused.

“It doesn’t exist.””

“What do you mean?””

“There is no record of it.””

“Impossible.””

“Not if someone removed it.””

I stared at the screen.

Someone had erased records.

Someone had hidden documents.

Someone had been cleaning up evidence for years.

Daniel entered the room.

“You found something?””

I turned.

“Isabella was investigating Adrian.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

I showed him the footage.

He watched silently.

When it ended, he looked troubled.

“I need to tell you something.””

I already hated those words.

“What?””

Daniel took a breath.

“After Isabella died, Adrian asked me to handle some of her personal documents.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“He said she had unfinished paperwork.””

“And did she?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I never saw anything unfinished.””

The room became quiet.

“What did he give you?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“A box.””

“What was inside?””

“Letters. Notes. Financial records.””

My voice became sharper.

“Where is it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“Adrian took it back.””

“When?””

“Two weeks after Isabella’s funeral.””

My hands tightened.

“And you let him?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought it belonged to the family.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“It belonged to my wife.””

Daniel nodded.

“You’re right.””

Marcus looked between us.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He pulled up another file.

“This footage was hidden.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Someone buried it in the system under a false label.””

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“Find out.””

He nodded.

A few seconds later, he opened the access history.

The screen displayed names.

Dates.

Actions.

Then one name appeared.

My breath caught.

*Elena Romano.*

I stared.

“She accessed this?””

Marcus nodded.

“Six months ago.””

Six months.

The same time she began questioning Luca’s inheritance.

The same time she started pushing me to update documents.

The same time Marcus began creating doubts about my son.

Everything connected.

Elena had known.

She had found Isabella’s investigation.

She had followed the trail.

And instead of exposing the truth…

She continued it.

“She knew about Isabella.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I looked at the footage again.

“Then why hide it?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

The truth threatened everything.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

An older woman.

Shaking.

“Victor?””

I froze.

Because I recognized the voice.

Not from recently.

From years ago.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a breath.

“It’s Margaret.””

My mind went blank.

Margaret had been Isabella’s personal assistant.

The person who worked with her every day before she died.

The person who disappeared shortly afterward.

“Where have you been?””

“I couldn’t contact you.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because Adrian told me if I spoke, my family would suffer.””

The room went silent.

Marcus and Daniel watched my face.

“Margaret,” I said carefully.

“What do you know?””

Her voice trembled.

“Everything.””

I gripped the phone.

“Tell me.””

“I know why Isabella was investigating him.””

“Why?””

“Because she discovered Adrian wasn’t trying to take your company.””

I frowned.

“Then what was he trying to take?””

Margaret whispered:

“Your son.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She found documents proving Adrian had been planning to remove Luca from the inheritance.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Margaret said the words that changed everything.

“Because Luca was never supposed to inherit the Romano estate.””

I felt cold.

“What are you talking about?””

“Victor…”

Her voice cracked.

“Your son’s birth records were altered.””

The room went completely silent.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What did you say?””

Margaret whispered:

“Luca’s real father is not who you think.””

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

And before I could ask another question, the call ended.

A second later, a message appeared.

One sentence.

May you like

From Margaret.

*“Do not trust the DNA test Adrian gave you.””*
