The Plate Beneath His Bed / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Letter My Wife Never Sent

The envelope was waiting exactly where Adrian had left it.

On my desk.

Under the soft glow of the lamp.

Almost perfectly placed.

Almost too carefully placed.

That was what frightened me.

My brother had not left it behind by accident.

He wanted me to find it.

He wanted me to open it after discovering everything else.

After questioning Elena.

After questioning Marcus.

After doubting everyone around me.

He had designed the moment.

My fingers hovered above the envelope.

My name was written across the front in a handwriting I knew better than my own.

*Victor.*

One word.

One familiar curve of the letters.

And suddenly, I was no longer standing in my office.

I was back in our old house.

Back before the mansion.

Back before the money.

Back before the secrets.

I could see Isabella sitting at the kitchen table late at night, writing notes while Luca slept upstairs.

She always wrote things down.

Appointments.

Memories.

Little moments she never wanted to forget.

The first time Luca said “Dad.””

The first time he rode a bicycle.

The first time he called her “Mommy.””

I remembered teasing her.

“You’re going to fill an entire room with journals someday.””

She had smiled.

“Maybe. But one day, someone might need to remember the things we forgot.””

At the time, I thought she meant birthdays.

Milestones.

Family memories.

I never imagined she meant this.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My hands started shaking.

*Victor,*

*If you are reading this, something happened that made me believe you finally needed to know the truth.*

I stopped.

My breathing became uneven.

Daniel stood nearby.

Marcus stayed by the door.

Neither of them spoke.

I continued.

*I don’t know when you will find this. I don’t know who will give it to you. But I need you to understand something.*

*Our family is not as safe as you believe.*

My eyes moved across the page.

*There are people around us who love the appearance of this family more than they love the people inside it.*

I looked up.

Elena’s words came back.

Stability.

Control.

The company.

The image.

I kept reading.

*Victor, you have always believed people show you who they are. I used to believe that too. But some people spend years becoming the person you need them to be.*

A chill moved through me.

Because that was exactly what Elena had done.

She had become everything I needed.

Kind.

Patient.

Understanding.

Until she wasn’t.

*I found documents I was never supposed to see.*

My heart stopped.

Documents.

Again.

*They involve Adrian.*

I looked at Daniel.

He stepped closer.

“Keep going.””

I did.

*I confronted him. He told me I misunderstood. He told me he was protecting the family.*

A bitter feeling filled my chest.

The same words.

The same excuse.

Protecting the family.

*But Victor, I know your brother. He does not protect things he loves. He protects things he owns.*

I stopped reading for a moment.

Because Isabella had known Adrian.

Not the version he showed at dinners.

Not the version who hugged Luca.

The real person underneath.

*There is something else. Something I need you to know about Luca.*

My eyes moved faster.

*If anything happens to me, do not let anyone convince you that our son is difficult, broken, or impossible to raise.*

My throat tightened.

Because that was exactly what happened.

**Luca feels deeply. He notices everything. He remembers every promise and every disappointment.

That is not weakness. That is who he is.**

I closed my eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

Because Isabella had described our son perfectly.

And I had spent months believing the opposite.

*Please promise me something.*

*Always believe Luca when he tells you he is hurting.*

I lowered the letter.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She knew something was wrong.””

I folded the letter carefully.

“She tried to warn me.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I should have found this.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“You weren’t the only one who failed.””

The words hurt.

But they were true.

I had failed too.

Not because I didn’t love my son.

Because I loved him and still ignored him.

I turned the page over.

There was something written on the back.

A name.

Not Adrian.

Not Elena.

A different name.

My heart stopped.

Because it was someone I never expected.

*Thomas Vale.*

Daniel immediately reacted.

“Where did you get that?””

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“He was one of Adrian’s business partners years ago.””

“Was?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Thomas disappeared after a major disagreement with Adrian.””

“Disappeared?””

“From the business world. He moved away.””

I stared at the name.

“Why would Isabella write his name?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“There’s something else.””

We looked at him.

He pointed toward the envelope.

“Look at the paper.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The watermark.””

I held it under the lamp.

A faint symbol appeared.

A small emblem.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

He took the letter.

“This paper came from the old Romano legal archive.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

“The archive was sealed after Isabella died.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who had access?””

Daniel went quiet.

“Only family members.””

I laughed softly.

“Of course.””

Everything always came back to family.

I left the office and walked upstairs.

I needed to see Luca.

Not as a father trying to fix a problem.

As a father trying to understand his son.

His bedroom door was slightly open.

I knocked.

“Come in.””

I entered.

Luca was sitting on his bed, holding an old photograph.

A picture of him and Isabella.

I sat beside him.

“You miss her?””

He nodded.

“Every day.””

I looked at the picture.

“Me too.””

He was quiet.

Then he asked:

“Is Elena leaving?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

That answer surprised him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

I took a breath.

“I spent a long time thinking I understood everything.””

He looked down.

“And you didn’t.””

“No.””

The honesty seemed to matter.

After a moment, he asked:

“Was Mom right about people?””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

He touched the photograph.

“She used to tell me that some people smile because they’re happy, and some people smile because they want you to trust them.””

My chest tightened.

“Did she tell you that?””

He nodded.

“When?””

“Before she got sick.””

I looked away.

Because once again, Isabella had noticed something I missed.

“Luca.””

“Yes?””

“Did Mom ever talk about Uncle Adrian?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“Sometimes.””

“What did she say?””

He hesitated.

“She said he wasn’t bad.””

I waited.

“But?””

Luca looked at me.

“She said I should never be alone with him when she wasn’t there.””

The room went cold.

“Why?””

He shrugged.

“I don’t know.””

“Did anything happen?””

“No.””

Then he paused.

“Not to me.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Luca looked toward the hallway.

“She just didn’t like how he looked at things.””

“How he looked at things?””

“He always talked about the house.””

I frowned.

“The house?””

“And the company.””

I felt a knot forming in my stomach.

“What did he say?””

Luca’s voice became quieter.

“He said everything belonged to the people who knew how to keep it.””

I stood.

Because suddenly, Isabella’s letter made sense.

The documents.

The inheritance.

The plan.

It had never been about Luca alone.

He was just the first obstacle.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered immediately.

“What happened?””

His breathing was heavy.

“Victor, you need to come downstairs.””

“Why?””

“We checked the deleted footage.””

“And?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found the person who helped Adrian enter your office.””

I looked at Luca.

Then at the door.

“Who?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Victor…”

“Who?””

His answer came slowly.

“It was Isabella.””

My blood turned cold.

“What?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

I grabbed the phone tighter.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus continued.

“The footage is from three years ago.””

I froze.

Three years.

The year before Isabella died.

“There’s more.””

My heartbeat accelerated.

“What?””

“The person who helped Adrian access the archive…”

Marcus stopped.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Was wearing Isabella’s wedding ring.””
