The Night They Tore My Dress / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Man Behind Daniel’s Ambition

The man’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that didn’t come from confidence.

It came from knowing you already had the upper hand.

Daniel took a step backward.

For the first time all night, I saw him look genuinely afraid.

Not embarrassed.

Not exposed.

Afraid.

“Victor.””

The name left Daniel’s mouth like a confession.

The guests looked between them.

Nobody understood.

But I did.

Because Daniel’s reaction told me this man wasn’t a stranger.

He was the missing piece.

The one person who could explain how this entire nightmare started.

The man walked farther into the garden.

He wore a dark suit with no visible branding, no expensive watch, nothing that screamed wealth.

Yet every person around him moved aside.

Not because they knew him.

Because they sensed power.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Mr. Victor Hale.””

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face became pale.

“How?””

Victor smiled slightly.

“That’s the question you should be asking yourself.””

Daniel looked around.

At his family.

At Vanessa.

At me.

Then back at Victor.

“This is not the place.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“No.””

He glanced at the crowd.

“This is exactly the place.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Victor looked at me.

And unlike everyone else that night, he didn’t look at my torn dress.

He didn’t look at my family name.

He looked at me.

Like he understood something.

“Emma Carter.””

Hearing my full name from him felt strange.

“Yes?””

He nodded.

“Your father was right to be careful.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t involve her.””

Victor’s eyes moved to him.

That was enough.

The entire garden felt the shift.

“Don’t involve her?””

Victor repeated.

“Daniel, she has been involved since the day you decided to use her.””

The words landed like a slap.

I looked at Daniel.

“Use her?””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I want to hear this.””

Daniel looked desperate.

“Not from him.””

“Why?””

I stared at him.

“Because he might tell me the truth?””

Silence.

Victor looked toward Thomas.

“Do you have the files?””

Thomas nodded.

Victor reached into his briefcase and removed a thick folder.

“I believe these belong to Mrs. Carter.””

I stared at it.

“How many secrets are there?””

Nobody answered.

Victor placed the folder on the table.

“Enough.””

My fingers touched the cover.

But before I opened it, Victor spoke.

“Three years ago, Daniel Carter approached me.””

Daniel looked away.

Victor continued.

“He was looking for investors.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You told me your company was already successful.””

“It was.””

Victor laughed.

“No.””

The sound was cold.

“It was an idea with debt attached.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I built that company.””

“You built the image of that company.””

The guests watched silently.

Victor opened the folder.

“Daniel needed money.””

He placed several documents on the table.

“He needed investors willing to overlook his financial problems.””

I looked down.

There were agreements.

Transfers.

Emails.

And then I saw something familiar.

My name.

Not my signature.

Just my name.

My stomach dropped.

“What is this?””

Victor answered.

“The plan he presented to me.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Plan?””

Daniel whispered:

“Emma.””

Victor continued.

“Daniel told me he had found a solution.””

I looked at him.

“What solution?””

Victor looked directly at Daniel.

“Marriage.””

The word made me feel sick.

Not because it surprised me.

Because some part of me still hoped I had misunderstood.

I hadn’t.

Victor continued.

“He told me that marrying Emma Carter would completely change his position.””

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked broken.

But he still didn’t deny it.

“What exactly did he say?””

Victor hesitated.

Then:

“He said, ‘Once I become part of that family, everything changes.’”

The garden became silent.

My vision blurred.

Because I remembered the night Daniel proposed.

The rain.

The small restaurant.

The way he held my hand.

The way he cried.

He told me I was the only person who made him feel understood.

Was any of it real?

Victor continued.

“At the time, I believed he was simply ambitious.””

He looked at Daniel.

“I was wrong.””

Daniel suddenly snapped.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

His voice was louder than before.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

Victor didn’t react.

“I know enough.””

“No, you know business.””

“I know people.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You gave me money.””

“Yes.””

“You invested because you believed in me.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I invested because I believed your plan would work.””

That sentence destroyed Daniel.

Because it separated the person from the opportunity.

Victor continued.

“I thought you were building a company.””

He looked at me.

“I did not know you were building a trap.””

Daniel’s face turned red.

“You’re acting innocent?””

Victor looked at him.

“Am I?””

“No.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You knew I was marrying into a wealthy family.””

“I knew you wanted success.””

“You knew Emma’s background.””

“I knew your version of events.””

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“I did not know you were lying to her.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You told everyone a different story.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice was quiet.

“You told me you hated people who cared about money.””

He looked down.

“You told me you wanted a simple life.””

No response.

“You told me you chose me because I was different.””

His silence answered.

I looked away.

The pain was still there.

But it was changing.

Pain became something else.

Clarity.

Victor opened another document.

“There is one thing Mrs. Carter should see.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“No.””

Victor looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel said nothing.

Thomas moved closer.

“What is it?””

Victor handed him the paper.

Thomas read it.

Then his expression changed.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

“What?””

Thomas hesitated.

“This is a communication between Daniel and another person.””

“Who?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Someone inside your family.””

My heart stopped.

“Inside my family?””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Victor spoke.

“Yes.””

He looked toward Eleanor.

Everyone turned.

Eleanor’s face went pale.

I stared.

“No.””

Victor sighed.

“I’m sorry.””

My voice shook.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victor placed the document on the table.

At the top was a name.

A name I had never expected.

A name that made Eleanor cover her mouth.

A name that made Daniel look terrified.

My father’s name.

I froze.

“What?””

Victor looked at me.

“Emma, before you met Daniel…”

He paused.

“Someone from your own family was already communicating with him.””

The world stopped.

Because I had spent the entire night believing there was one enemy.

Daniel.

But now there was another question.

Who had opened the door for him?

Who had helped him get close to me?

Who had known the plan before I did?

I grabbed the document.

My eyes moved down the page.

And there it was.

A signature.

Not my father’s.

Not Daniel’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had hugged me.

Someone who had called me family.

My hand flew to my mouth.

“No…”

Daniel whispered:

“Emma.””

I looked up.

“What?””

His eyes were filled with fear.

“Don’t trust that document.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Because the answer came from Victor.

“Because the person who signed it…”

May you like

He looked toward the entrance.

“…is standing right behind you.””
