The Night They Tore My Dress / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Secret

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.

Not because I didn’t hear them.

Because my mind refused to accept them.

“Your husband has been meeting someone else for months.””

My father’s voice echoed in my ear.

Months.

Not days.

Not one mistake.

Months.

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at me.

And the expression on his face told me everything before he ever spoke.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Emma,” he said quietly.

I lowered the phone.

My father was still there.

Waiting.

But I couldn’t answer.

I couldn’t speak.

Because there was a strange moment when your heart breaks, and the pain is so sharp that your body protects you by becoming numb.

That was where I was.

Standing in a garden full of people.

Wearing a torn dress.

Holding proof of my husband’s betrayal.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Please.””

I raised my hand.

He stopped.

That single movement shocked him.

Because Daniel was used to me listening.

Used to me forgiving.

Used to me giving him another chance.

Not anymore.

“Who is she?””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

“Who is she?””

This time, my voice was louder.

Chloe suddenly looked uncomfortable.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

And I realized something that made my stomach turn.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Daniel ran his hand through his hair.

“Emma, it’s complicated.””

I almost smiled.

“Of course it is.””

The guests watched silently.

“Everything with you is complicated.””

“That’s not fair.””

I stared at him.

“Fair?””

I looked down at my torn dress.

At the documents in my hand.

At the ultrasound photo still lying near the fountain.

“Do you want to talk about fair?””

He had no answer.

My father’s voice came through the phone.

“Emma.””

I lifted it back to my ear.

“I’m here.””

“Do you want me to send the evidence?””

I closed my eyes.

A part of me wanted to say no.

A part of me wanted to protect the last pieces of my marriage.

But that part of me was exhausted.

“Yes.””

A few seconds passed.

Then my father said:

“It’s already on the way.””

Daniel heard.

His face changed.

“What evidence?””

I looked at him.

“The evidence you were hoping I would never see.””

His jaw tightened.

“Emma, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Tonight, everyone has asked me to listen.””

I looked at Chloe.

“Chloe asked me to prove I didn’t steal.””

I looked at Eleanor.

“Your mother asked me to accept being treated like I was less than everyone.””

Then I looked back at Daniel.

“And you asked me to trust you while you destroyed me.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked like he wanted to say something.

But there was nothing left to explain.

The truth had already arrived.

Then another set of footsteps approached.

A woman entered the garden.

She was young.

Beautiful.

Confident.

And immediately, Daniel went completely still.

My heart sank.

Because I recognized her.

Not personally.

But from somewhere else.

She had been in photos.

Company events.

Social media posts.

A woman always standing close to Daniel.

A woman everyone described as his “business partner.””

I looked at him.

“Her?””

He didn’t answer.

The woman stopped when she saw the crowd.

Her confidence disappeared.

“Daniel?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Ms. Vanessa Blake.””

She looked at him.

“Yes?””

“Thank you for coming.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t know this was…”

She stopped.

Because she finally saw me.

The torn dress.

The papers.

The room full of witnesses.

“Emma,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“How long?””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

“How long have you been seeing my husband?””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Emma, don’t do this here.””

I turned toward him.

“Where should I do it?””

My voice shook.

“In private?””

I laughed quietly.

“Like the private conversations you had with her?””

He looked down.

Vanessa’s face became pale.

“I didn’t know you were going to find out like this.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it meant there was something to find out.

I stared at her.

“You knew about me?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

The guests reacted immediately.

A wave of whispers moved through the garden.

“You knew he was married?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Did you know I was pregnant?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

That was the moment.

Not the ring.

Not the money.

Not the documents.

That was the moment that truly destroyed me.

Because she knew.

They both knew.

And they still chose this.

I looked at Daniel.

“You brought me here tonight.””

He didn’t respond.

“You brought me to this celebration knowing you were seeing another woman.””

“Emma…”

“You let your family accuse me.””

“I didn’t know Chloe would—”

“Stop.””

The word cut through the garden.

“Stop pretending you were powerless.””

Daniel went silent.

Because he knew.

He had made choices.

Every single day.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Emma, I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You’re sorry you got caught.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you stay?””

She looked down.

No answer.

Exactly.

Thomas received a message on his phone.

He checked it.

Then looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I turned.

“Your father sent the files.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

“No?””

Daniel realized what he had done.

Too late.

Thomas opened the file on his tablet.

“The first file contains photographs.””

He turned the screen.

A picture appeared.

Daniel and Vanessa.

At a restaurant.

Holding hands.

Another picture.

Daniel entering a hotel.

Another.

Vanessa leaving the same hotel the next morning.

The garden went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

Thomas continued.

“The photographs were taken over the past six months.””

Six months.

Half my pregnancy.

Half the time I had spent believing my husband was preparing for our child.

I touched my stomach.

My baby moved.

A small reminder that I was still here.

That I still had something real.

Daniel saw the movement.

His expression changed.

“Emma…”

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw him not as my husband.

But as a stranger.

“What?””

“I love you.””

The words almost made me angry.

Almost.

Because love was not a sentence.

Love was what you did when nobody was watching.

Love was standing beside someone when they were humiliated.

Love was protecting them when it was inconvenient.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His eyes filled.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

“Mistakes are saying the wrong thing.””

“This was a decision.””

He looked devastated.

Good.

Because I was finally letting him feel a fraction of what I felt.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s face changed instantly.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can’t keep lying.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What else?””

She looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

“He didn’t just hide the affair.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Her voice trembled.

“He planned everything.””

The garden became completely still.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“The marriage.””

I frowned.

“The marriage?””

She nodded.

“Daniel knew about your family before he met you.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But she continued.

“He knew exactly who your father was.””

My hands went cold.

Because that was impossible.

When I met Daniel, he told me he loved my ordinary life.

He told me my family didn’t matter.

He told me money changed people.

But now…

Vanessa whispered:

“He didn’t fall in love with Emma Carter.””

She looked at Daniel.

“He fell in love with what the Carter name could give him.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Daniel.

I stared at my husband.

The man who had promised forever.

The man who held my hand.

The man who kissed me goodnight.

And suddenly, I wondered something I had never allowed myself to wonder before.

When did the lie begin?

Before the wedding?

Before the engagement?

Or before I ever met him?

Thomas stepped beside me.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

He handed me another document.

“This is the original investigation report.””

I looked at the first page.

My blood ran cold.

Because the date at the top was from three years ago.

Before Daniel proposed.

Before we married.

Before he ever told me he loved me.

May you like

And underneath the date was a sentence that made my hands shake.
