Chapter 6: The Marriage That Was Never Real
The words blurred.
I read them once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
But they did not change.
*Subject: Daniel Carter’s initial plan to gain access to Emma Carter’s family assets.*
My fingers tightened around the document.
The paper shook.
Not because I was surprised.
Because somewhere deep inside, I had already known.
A woman always knows when something feels wrong.
She just spends years convincing herself she is imagining it.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me this isn’t real.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
That frightened him more than anger would have.
“Emma.””
“Tell me.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that was the final answer.
The garden erupted.
Guests started whispering louder.
Phones appeared.
People who had spent the last hour watching me fall apart were now watching Daniel fall.
Funny how quickly the world changes when the person everyone thought was powerful suddenly becomes the person everyone wants answers from.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Please, let me explain.””
I looked at him.
“Explain what?””
His face tightened.
“That it started differently.””
I stared.
“Started?””
The word hung between us.
“Daniel, you just admitted it had a start.””
He swallowed.
“I didn’t marry you because of money.””
“Then why did this document exist?””
No answer.
“Why did you investigate my family before we met?””
Silence.
“Why did you know my father’s name?””
His eyes dropped.
And that small movement destroyed whatever hope remained.
I turned away.
For three years, I had defended this man.
Against my friends.
Against my family.
Even against my own instincts.
I remembered the first time I told my father about Daniel.
My father had been quiet.
Too quiet.
“Do you trust him?”” he asked.
I laughed.
“Dad, why wouldn’t I?””
He looked at me for a long moment.
“Because sometimes the most dangerous people are the ones who know exactly what you want to hear.””
I got angry.
I told him he was judging someone he didn’t know.
I told him Daniel loved me.
My father didn’t argue.
He only said:
“I hope you’re right.””
Now I understood.
He wasn’t trying to control my life.
He was trying to protect it.
Thomas spoke softly.
“Mrs. Carter, the investigation began shortly after your first meeting with Mr. Carter.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Your father noticed unusual activity.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Your father was spying on me?””
The anger in his voice surprised me.
Not because he was angry.
Because he sounded offended.
As if he was the victim.
I looked at him.
“My father investigated you because he had a reason.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“He never trusted me.””
I laughed quietly.
“No, Daniel.””
Everyone looked at me.
“He trusted me.””
That hurt him.
I saw it.
Because it was true.
My father didn’t stop me.
He let me make my choice.
And Daniel knew that.
Thomas continued.
“Mr. Carter had accumulated significant debt before meeting you.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Stop.””
But Thomas continued.
“His company was close to bankruptcy.””
A few guests gasped.
Daniel’s coworkers looked shocked.
“You told everyone you built that company yourself,” I whispered.
“I did.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You built a company on a foundation you hid from everyone.””
He looked desperate.
“Emma, I was going to fix it.””
“When?””
He looked away.
Again.
That answer hurt.
Because every promise Daniel made had always existed somewhere in the future.
Tomorrow.
Next month.
After things settled down.
After work became easier.
After the baby arrived.
There was always a reason not to choose me today.
Vanessa stood near the entrance, crying silently.
I looked at her.
“You knew from the beginning?””
She wiped her face.
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“How did you meet him?””
She hesitated.
Daniel looked at her.
“Don’t.””
She ignored him.
“At a business event.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of event?””
“A networking dinner.””
“And?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“He asked about you.””
My heart sank.
“Me?””
She nodded.
“He knew your father’s company. He knew your background. He knew you were living quietly.””
The world felt colder.
“He researched me.””
“Yes.””
“And then what?””
Her voice became smaller.
“He said you were different from other wealthy women.””
I almost smiled.
A painful smile.
Of course.
That was the perfect line.
The one that made me feel special.
The one that made me believe I was loved for who I was.
“He told me,” Vanessa continued, “that you hated people who cared about money.””
I stared.
Because that was true.
I hated fake people.
I hated being treated differently because of my family.
Daniel had used the one thing I cared about most.
My desire to be seen as Emma.
Not as a last name.
Not as an inheritance.
Not as a fortune.
Just Emma.
Vanessa whispered:
“He said if he made you believe he loved the real you, you would never question him.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked broken.
But I no longer knew if the brokenness was guilt.
Or fear.
“Did you love me at all?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
For a second, his expression changed.
A real emotion appeared.
Pain.
“I did.””
I stared at him.
“I did love you.””
“Then when?””
He froze.
“When did you start loving me?””
He couldn’t answer immediately.
That was all I needed.
Because if someone truly loved you, they remembered.
They remembered the first moment.
The first smile.
The first conversation.
The first reason they knew.
Daniel looked down.
And my heart broke one final time.
Thomas quietly took the document from my hand.
“Mrs. Carter, there is something else you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
His expression was serious.
“The investigation was not completed three years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because your father wanted proof.””
I frowned.
“Proof?””
“He suspected Mr. Carter’s intentions but did not want to accuse him without certainty.””
I looked at my father’s behavior differently now.
The expensive gifts he refused to give me.
The business offers he never mentioned.
The private conversations he had with Daniel.
I thought he was interfering.
He was gathering evidence.
Thomas continued.
“The investigation remained active.””
“How long?””
“Until today.””
My heart stopped.
“Today?””
“Yes.””
“Why today?””
Thomas looked toward Chloe.
Then Eleanor.
Then Daniel.
“Because your father received information that there was a plan to remove you from control of your own assets.””
A chill moved through me.
“Remove me?””
Thomas nodded.
“After the baby’s birth.””
I touched my stomach.
“What were they planning?””
Nobody answered.
Then Eleanor spoke.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Daniel wanted temporary guardianship.””
I turned.
“What?””
Eleanor looked ashamed.
“He said it was only to protect the child.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
“Protect?””
He looked desperate.
“Emma, I never wanted to take your baby.””
“But you prepared documents.””
“I was scared.””
“You were scared of me?””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I was scared your father would take everything away from me.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not our child.
Not our family.
Himself.
Always himself.
Thomas checked his phone.
Then his expression changed.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Your father has requested that I bring you home immediately.””
I almost laughed.
Home.
That word felt strange.
Because the house I thought was mine wasn’t mine.
The marriage I thought was real wasn’t real.
The future I imagined had never existed.
Then Thomas added:
“He also asked me to tell you something personally.””
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He said…”
A pause.
“He is sorry he let you believe you had to face this alone.””
My eyes burned.
Because that was the first apology I had heard all night.
And it came from the one person I had pushed away.
Then the garden doors opened again.
A group of people entered.
Lawyers.
Security.
And behind them was a woman carrying a small folder.
Thomas looked at her.
“She has the final piece of evidence.””
I stared.
“Final piece?””
The woman walked toward me.
“Emma Carter?””
“Yes.””
She handed me the folder.
“I was your mother’s attorney.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
Nobody had mentioned my mother.
Not tonight.
Not ever.
The woman opened the folder.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Yellowed.
Handwritten.
My mother’s handwriting.
My breath caught.
Because my mother had died when I was young.
And I had never received another letter from her.
The attorney looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“She left this for you.””
I held the letter with trembling hands.
“Why now?””
The woman’s eyes turned cold.
“Because your mother discovered the truth about men like Daniel long before your father did.””
I opened the letter.

The first sentence made my entire body freeze.
*My dearest Emma, if you are reading this, then someone has finally tried to take what was never theirs.*
