The Night They Tore My Dress / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Person Who Knew Everything

The doors opened slowly.

Everyone turned.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The person standing there looked completely out of place.

Not because they were unfamiliar.

Because they were familiar.

Too familiar.

My breath caught.

“Mom?””

The woman standing at the entrance lowered her eyes.

Eleanor Bennett.

Daniel’s mother.

The same woman who had stepped on my dress.

The same woman who had watched me get humiliated without lifting a finger.

The same woman who had spent three years reminding me I didn’t belong.

But now she wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t confident.

She looked terrified.

The garden erupted into whispers.

“Eleanor knew?””

“She was involved?””

“What is happening?””

Daniel immediately walked toward her.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

And for the first time all night, I saw something different between them.

Not love.

Not family loyalty.

Fear.

“What are you doing here?”” Daniel asked.

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Her eyes moved to Thomas.

Then to me.

Then to the papers in my hand.

“Emma…”

I almost couldn’t believe she said my name.

For years, she had called me sweetheart.

But it was never affectionate.

It was always a reminder that she was above me.

Now she sounded small.

I held the document tighter.

“Did you know?””

Her lips parted.

No words came.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

Daniel stepped in.

“Emma, don’t do this.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t do what?””

His face was pale.

“Don’t turn this into something it isn’t.””

I stared at him.

“You signed papers about my child.””

His jaw tightened.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

“Your family?””

I looked around.

“At what point did I stop being your family?””

Silence.

That question hurt more than any confession.

Because Daniel had no answer.

Eleanor finally spoke.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

I turned toward her.

“Like what?””

She looked down.

“The truth coming out.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

She admitted it.

“You knew.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed whatever small piece of trust I had left.

The guests watched as years of carefully hidden secrets started falling apart.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

I almost laughed.

“Try me.””

Her eyes flashed with the same pride I had seen countless times before.

“You always thought Daniel chose you because he loved you.””

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“He did.””

She looked away.

“Did he?””

The question hit harder because of how calmly she said it.

Daniel immediately turned.

“Mom.””

But Eleanor continued.

“You never asked why he married you.””

My stomach twisted.

“Because we loved each other.””

She gave a sad smile.

“That’s what you believed.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

And suddenly, memories I had ignored began returning.

The rushed proposal.

The way Daniel’s family accepted me too quickly after years of barely acknowledging me.

The way Eleanor suddenly became kind after our engagement.

The way Daniel always avoided certain questions.

I whispered:

“What are you saying?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“Mrs. Bennett has information regarding the original arrangement.””

I looked at him.

“Arrangement?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stop.””

His voice cracked.

“Please stop.””

Nobody moved.

Thomas continued.

“Three years ago, when Mr. Carter married you, his company was facing serious financial pressure.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

Thomas looked at the guests.

“Several investors were prepared to withdraw after discovering the company’s debt.””

I stared at Daniel.

“You told me everything was fine.””

“I was fixing it.””

“You told me we were building something together.””

“We were.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were building something.””

The difference mattered.

Because I had thought I was his partner.

But maybe I was just his solution.

Eleanor spoke softly.

“Your father’s approval mattered.””

I looked at her.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Your family’s reputation.””

Everything became still.

Because suddenly I understood.

They hadn’t hated me because I was poor.

They hated me because they underestimated me.

They thought I was a quiet woman who happened to have money.

They thought they could control me.

Use me.

And then throw me away.

Chloe stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She laughed nervously.

“Are we really letting her pretend she’s some victim?””

I looked at her.

After everything.

She still couldn’t admit what she had done.

“You tore my dress.””

Her face changed.

“You grabbed me.””

“You accused me of stealing.””

“Because the ring—”

“Was never missing.””

The words silenced her.

Thomas looked toward his assistant.

“Play the footage.””

The assistant tapped the tablet.

A large screen near the garden wall turned on.

The guests gathered.

The video showed the reception area from earlier.

The angle was clear.

Everyone watched.

Including Chloe.

The ring box sat on a table.

Chloe walked toward it.

She looked around.

Then she picked up the ring.

The garden went silent.

On the screen, Chloe slipped the ring into her own purse.

Then she walked away.

Nobody breathed.

Chloe’s face lost all color.

“That’s edited.””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Daniel.

“Daniel, tell them.””

But Daniel wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at me.

And I hated that part of me still hoped.

Still wanted him to say something.

Anything.

He didn’t.

Thomas turned off the screen.

“The theft accusation was staged.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Chloe…”

Chloe spun toward her.

“Don’t act innocent.””

That sentence shocked everyone.

Because Chloe’s anger wasn’t toward me.

It was toward Eleanor.

“You told me this would work.””

The garden froze.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What did she just say?””

Chloe realized too late.

She covered her mouth.

But the damage was done.

I stared at Eleanor.

“You planned this?””

Eleanor’s face crumbled.

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“Not exactly.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

“I told you not to involve Chloe.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Mom.””

The word came out like a warning.

Thomas quietly said:

“Mrs. Bennett, perhaps you should explain everything now.””

Eleanor looked exhausted.

For the first time, she looked like an old woman.

Not the powerful mother who controlled every room.

Not the woman who made everyone feel small.

Just someone who knew she had lost.

She looked at me.

“Your father warned me.””

I frowned.

“About what?””

“That if Daniel ever hurt you…”

She swallowed.

“He would know.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

My father.

He had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Eleanor continued.

“I thought I could fix it before he found out.””

“Fix what?””

She looked at Daniel.

And her eyes filled with disappointment.

“Your son.””

Daniel flinched.

“Mom.””

“You were supposed to love her.””

His face changed.

“I do.””

Nobody believed him.

Not even him.

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“You loved what she could give you.””

Daniel looked away.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because Eleanor defended me.

Because I realized even she knew the truth.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, there is one final piece of information.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He handed me another document.

“This was found in Mr. Carter’s office yesterday.””

I stared at the paper.

“What is it?””

Thomas’s voice became quieter.

“A custody agreement.””

My fingers froze.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

He didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

The document shook in my hand.

Thomas continued.

“The agreement states that if your marriage ended before the birth of your child, Mr. Carter would seek full custody.””

My vision blurred.

“He wanted my baby.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, listen to me.””

I backed away.

“You planned a life without me.””

“No.””

“You made arrangements to take my child.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

His voice broke.

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at him.

And finally understood.

The man I loved wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing access to what I had.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed one name.

Dad.

I answered.

“Emma?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Are you still at the venue?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then he asked:

“Is Daniel Carter there?””

I looked at my husband.

“Yes.””

My father exhaled slowly.

“Good.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

His answer came immediately.

“Because I just received proof that Daniel wasn’t only planning to take your child.””

The garden went silent.

My father continued.

“He was planning to make sure you never found out you were pregnant with your second secret.””

I froze.

“What?””

Everyone stared at me.

Even Daniel.

Then my father said the words that changed the entire night.

May you like

“Emma…”

“Your husband has been meeting someone else for months.””
