Chapter 8: The Friend Who Buried the Truth
The room went completely silent.
For a second, I thought I had misunderstood her.
Maybe my mind was too exhausted.
Maybe after everything that happened tonight, I was searching for betrayal everywhere.
But then Megan repeated it.
“I was the one who hid it.””
The letter in my hand suddenly felt heavier.
I stared at her.
“You hid my mother’s letter?””
Megan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer was so simple.
So direct.
And somehow that made it worse.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked shocked.
Not surprised.
Shocked.
“You knew she hid it?””
Megan looked at him.
“No.””
“Then what did you know?””
Her expression changed.
And I saw something I had never seen from her before.
Shame.
“I knew she wrote it.””
I stepped closer.
“How?””
Megan looked around the house.
At the walls.
At the memories.
“I was here that night.””
My heart dropped.
“What night?””
“The night your mother died.””
The room tilted.
Daniel whispered:
“Megan…”
But she kept going.
“I was here when she wrote it.””
I felt my hands shaking.
“You were at my house?””
She nodded.
“Your mother called me.””
The words didn’t make sense.
“My mother called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Megan looked down.
“Because she trusted me.””
That sentence hurt.
Because my mother had trusted her.
And so had I.
I swallowed.
“What did she know?””
Megan walked slowly into the room.
She looked smaller somehow.
Not innocent.
Just smaller.
Like the confidence she always carried had finally disappeared.
“Your mother knew someone was taking money from the family accounts.””
I stared.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Megan.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your uncle.””
The words shocked me.
“My uncle?””
I barely knew what to say.
“My mother’s brother?””
Megan nodded.
“He had access to the finances. He was supposed to help your grandfather manage everything after he got sick.””
I shook my head.
“But why would my mother hide that from me?””
“Because she didn’t want you involved.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I held up the letter.
“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody ever asked if I wanted to be protected.””
Megan looked like she wanted to cry.
“You were young.””
“I was twenty-four.””
“You were about to get married.””
“And I deserved the truth.””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
For once, she wasn’t fighting.
She wasn’t twisting the story.
She was admitting it.
I looked at the letter.
“Why did you hide this?””
Megan didn’t answer.
I waited.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because Sarah asked me to.””
Daniel immediately looked at her.
“What?””
Megan turned toward him.
“Sarah knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That your mother wanted to leave the evidence with Emma.””
I frowned.
“Then why hide it?””
Megan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because your mother died before she could finish everything.””
The room became quiet.
“She gave me the letter,” Megan continued.
“She told me to keep it safe until Emma was ready.””
My heart tightened.
“Ready?””
“Yes.””
“Ready for what?””
Megan looked at me.
“For the truth.””
I looked down at the letter.
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the question.
The only question.
And everyone knew it.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Megan.””
She looked at him.
“You need to tell her.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“You need to tell her why.””
Megan stared at him.
“You’re really doing this?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“For once, yes.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Megan laughed quietly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“I don’t.””
She wiped her face.
“Because you never saw what happened after your mother died.””
“What happened?””
Megan looked at the letter.
“Everyone blamed themselves.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
“Your mother’s brother disappeared.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He left the country.””
“Why?””
“Because Sarah found proof against him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Your sister.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
Megan continued.
“But before Sarah could hand everything over, she died.””
My stomach twisted.
“Her death was an accident?””
Nobody answered.
That silence terrified me.
“Megan.””
She whispered:
“Sarah’s death was investigated.””
“And?””
“And the investigation was closed.””
“Why?””
She looked at Daniel.
And he looked away.
That was enough.
“Because someone interfered.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at Daniel.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He took a deep breath.
“Sarah wasn’t just investigating your uncle.””
“Then who?””
His voice dropped.
“She was investigating everyone connected to the money.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
“Your family too?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“And you?””
His face changed.
“I wasn’t involved.””
“But she investigated you.””
“Yes.””
The answer stunned me.
“Why?””
“Because my family’s company had business connections with yours.””
I sat down.
Everything was becoming too much.
The cheating.
The secrets.
My mother.
Sarah.
The letter.
It felt like my entire life had been built on information everyone else had.
Megan sat across from me.
“Emma.””
I looked at her.
“I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
“The photograph David sent you…”
I waited.
“It wasn’t the most important thing from that night.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
She looked toward Daniel.
“He wasn’t with me because I wanted him.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
I stared.
“Then why?””
“Because Sarah asked him to come.””
My mind froze.
“What?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Sarah needed someone she trusted.””
“Why you?””
“Because I was her brother.””
“And why was Megan there?””
Megan looked down.
“Because your mother trusted me.””
I shook my head.
“I still don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Sarah had found the person who was moving the money.””
“Who?””
His jaw tightened.
“She found evidence that pointed to someone close to your mother.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
David.
I answered immediately.
“David?””
His voice sounded urgent.
“Emma, are you with Megan?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“You need to leave that house.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
“Because I just found the original copy of the photograph.””
I frowned.
“What original?””
“The one from the hotel.””
I looked at Megan.
“What are you talking about?””
David’s voice lowered.
“Emma, the photograph you saw was edited.””
The room went still.
“What?””
“The person standing behind Megan wasn’t just watching.””
I felt cold.
“What do you mean?””
“The original image shows someone else.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
David didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Someone who was supposed to be dead.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What?””
“Emma, listen to me carefully.””
His voice became urgent.
“The person in that photograph…”
A pause.
“The person who was with your mother and Sarah that night…”
My breathing stopped.
“Was your father.””
I froze.
My father had died when I was eight.
A memory.
A funeral.
A closed chapter.
Impossible.
I looked at Megan.
She looked terrified.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
David continued.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
I couldn’t speak.
“But Emma…”
His voice dropped.
“Your father wasn’t dead when that photograph was taken.””
The letter slipped from my hand.
And then Megan said the one thing that made everything worse.
“I knew.””
I looked at her.
“You knew my father was alive?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because her silence was a confession.
And suddenly, the secret my mother had buried wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about betrayal.
May you like
It was about a man I had mourned for most of my life…
who might have been alive all along.
