Chapter 3: The Photograph That Was Never Meant to Be Seen

Megan stared at her phone like it had become something dangerous.

The confidence she had carried all night disappeared.

Her fingers hovered over the screen.

She didn’t answer.

She just watched it ring.

And somehow, that terrified me more than if she had picked up immediately.

Because Megan was never someone who hesitated.

She always had an answer.

A comeback.

A way to turn things around.

But now she looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.

The call stopped.

A few seconds later, her phone buzzed again.

This time, she looked at me.

Not Daniel.

Not Ryan.

Me.

Then she walked quickly toward the restaurant’s exit.

“Where is she going?”” Olivia asked from behind me.

I hadn’t even noticed she had come back outside.

I watched Megan disappear through the door.

“She knows something,” I whispered.

Ryan looked at me.

“She always does.””

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked uncomfortable.

Then he sighed.

“It means Megan has always been good at keeping things hidden.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, wait.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His expression was full of regret.

“I don’t want you finding out things from other people.””

I almost smiled.

“Daniel, I think that ship sailed about an hour ago.””

He lowered his head.

I hated seeing him hurt.

But I hated even more that I no longer knew if his pain was because he regretted hurting me or because he was afraid of losing me.

Those were two very different things.

A few minutes passed.

Nobody spoke.

The birthday dinner that had started with laughter had turned into something else entirely.

A room full of people pretending not to watch a disaster unfold.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Is this Emma Carter?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

There was a pause.

“I’m David Miller.””

My heart stopped.

The name was familiar.

Too familiar.

“David?””

“Yes. I was the photographer at your wedding.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“Why is he calling you?””

I ignored him.

“Why are you contacting me?””

David exhaled.

“I’m sorry to do this after all these years.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Do what?””

“I saw what happened tonight online.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“There are videos from the restaurant.””

My stomach tightened.

Of course.

Thirty people.

A public restaurant.

Phones everywhere.

But then David continued.

“And after seeing Megan again, I realized I couldn’t keep quiet anymore.””

The street suddenly felt colder.

“About what?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“The night before your wedding.””

My hand tightened around my phone.

“What about it?””

David lowered his voice.

“I don’t think Megan ever told you the truth.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me carefully.

“Truth about what?””

David took a breath.

“I found something while organizing old files.””

“What kind of something?””

“A photograph.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“A photograph from my wedding?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

His voice sounded troubled.

“Because the photograph wasn’t supposed to exist.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Before David could answer, the restaurant door opened.

Megan stepped outside.

Her face was different.

The fear was gone.

Replaced by anger.

“What are you doing?””

Everyone turned.

She looked directly at me.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

She knew.

She knew exactly who I was talking to.

I slowly lowered my phone.

“You know David?””

Her jaw tightened.

For a second, she said nothing.

Then she forced a laugh.

“Of course I know David. He photographed your wedding.””

“Then why do you look scared?””

“I don’t.””

“You do.””

Megan looked around.

At Daniel.

At Ryan.

At everyone watching.

Then she walked closer.

“Emma, you need to stop.””

The words were quiet.

But threatening.

I stared at her.

“Stop what?””

“Destroying everything because you misunderstood one situation.””

I laughed softly.

“One situation?””

She looked away.

“You’re spiraling.””

There it was again.

The same tactic.

Make me question myself.

Make me defend my reaction instead of questioning her behavior.

But this time, something had changed.

I wasn’t alone.

Everyone had seen it.

Everyone had heard it.

I looked at her.

“Tell me about the night before my wedding.””

Her face froze.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Ryan saw it too.

Daniel noticed.

“What happened that night?”” he asked.

Megan looked at him.

“You’re really going to ask that?””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She shook her head.

“Nothing.””

I stepped closer.

“David says there’s a photograph.””

Megan’s eyes flashed.

“He shouldn’t have called you.””

That answer was not a denial.

Nobody missed it.

Olivia covered her mouth.

Ryan stared at his wife.

“Megan…”

She turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But the way she said it made him stop.

I felt my pulse racing.

“What’s in the photograph?””

Megan looked at me.

And for the first time in twelve years, I saw something underneath her confidence.

Panic.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

“Then what is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Still nothing.

“Tell me why a wedding photographer from twelve years ago is calling me because of you.””

Megan’s expression hardened.

“Because he’s trying to cause problems.””

“Why?””

“He always had a weird obsession with drama.””

From behind me, David’s voice came through the phone.

I had forgotten I was still connected.

“Emma?””

Everyone looked at the phone.

Megan went pale.

“You’re still on the call?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

David spoke again.

“Emma, I can send you the photograph.””

Megan immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

The word came out too fast.

Too desperate.

The entire group went silent.

I felt something break inside me.

Because I had spent years believing Megan was my protector.

My sister by choice.

The person who would stand between me and anyone who tried to hurt me.

But now she was standing in front of me, trying to stop me from seeing the truth.

“What are you hiding?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t want to know.””

Those five words were worse than any confession.

Because they confirmed my fear.

There was something.

Something from the happiest day of my life that I didn’t know.

Daniel stepped beside me.

“Emma…”

I raised my hand.

Not because I didn’t want him there.

Because I couldn’t handle another person explaining something to me.

I needed the truth.

From the person who had been hiding it.

“Megan.””

She looked at me.

“After twelve years, after everything we’ve been through…”

My voice shook.

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, I saw the girl who had held my wedding dress.

The girl who cried with me.

The girl I trusted.

Then it disappeared.

And the woman standing in front of me said something I never expected.

“Because you got everything I wanted.””

The words hung in the air.

Nobody moved.

Ryan looked like he had been punched.

Daniel stared at her.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

Megan immediately looked away.

Like she regretted saying it.

But it was too late.

“You wanted my life?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She swallowed.

“I wanted what you had.””

“What did I have?””

Her eyes moved to Daniel.

And my blood ran cold.

“Someone who chose you.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Megan…”

She ignored him.

“You always had people choosing you.””

I stared at her.

“That’s what this is about?””

She laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea what it feels like to watch someone get everything handed to them.””

I shook my head.

“You think my marriage was handed to me?””

“You think you’re special because Daniel loves you?””

The anger in her voice surprised everyone.

Especially Ryan.

Because it wasn’t jealousy anymore.

It was resentment.

Years of it.

My phone buzzed.

David had sent something.

A file.

A photograph.

My finger hovered over the screen.

Megan saw it.

Her face changed.

“Emma, don’t.””

Everyone held their breath.

I opened the file.

The image loaded slowly.

At first, I saw a hotel room.

Then I saw the date.

The night before my wedding.

And then I saw the two people standing inside.

One of them was Megan.

The other person was someone I never expected.

Someone who made Daniel’s face turn completely white.

May you like

Because the second person in that photograph was wearing Daniel’s jacket.

And standing far too close to my best friend.
