Chapter 6: The Secret Behind My Mother’s Last Night
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
My mother.
Sarah.
Megan.
Three people connected by a night I had never known existed.
A night everyone else seemed determined to erase.
The image wasn’t blurry.
It wasn’t unclear.
There was no way to pretend I was seeing something wrong.
My mother stood outside the hotel entrance, her face serious.
Sarah stood beside her, holding something in her hand.
And several feet away, partially hidden behind a pillar…
was Megan.
Watching them.
I felt my throat tighten.
“Megan.””
I said her name quietly.
But everyone heard it.
She looked at me.
And for the first time all night, she didn’t try to defend herself.
She didn’t roll her eyes.
She didn’t accuse me of being dramatic.
She just looked afraid.
“How long?”” I asked.
Her lips parted.
“Emma…”
“How long have you known about this?””
She looked down.
That was all the answer I needed.
A wave of anger moved through me.
Not the explosive kind.
Something colder.
Something deeper.
“You knew about my mother.””
Megan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I laughed softly.
“You always say that.””
“What?””
“That you didn’t know everything.””
I held up my phone.
“But you always know enough to hurt me.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma, please.””
I turned toward him.
“No.””
My voice was sharp.
“Tonight, everyone keeps asking me to listen.””
I pointed at the photograph.
“But nobody has explained why I’m always the last person to know my own story.””
Daniel stopped.
Because he knew there was no answer.
Ryan looked at Megan.
“You knew about her mother?””
Megan didn’t respond.
His face changed.
“You knew something this serious, and you never told Emma?””
She looked at him.
“Ryan, you don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I understand exactly.””
He shook his head.
“I’ve spent years wondering why you always acted like you had some secret connection to Emma’s life.””
Megan looked away.
Ryan continued.
“You knew things about her that I didn’t even know.””
My eyes moved toward him.
“What things?””
Ryan hesitated.
Then he said:
“She knew about your mother’s old investigation.””
My body went still.
“Investigation?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Megan…”
I looked at him.
“You knew too?””
He didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
I stepped back.
“How many people knew?””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
I looked around at everyone standing there.
My husband.
My best friend.
Her husband.
Our friends.
All of them carrying pieces of my life that I had never been given.
I turned toward Megan.
“Tell me.””
She wiped her face.
“I was seventeen.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“When I first met your mother.””
The words shocked me.
“You met my mother before I met Daniel?””
Megan nodded.
“She helped me.””
I stared at her.
“My mother helped you?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Megan looked toward the street.
“I was in trouble.””
“What kind of trouble?””
She swallowed.
“I made a mistake.””
That answer immediately bothered me.
“What mistake?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I found out something about Sarah.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What?””
Megan took a breath.
“Sarah was trying to find out who was responsible for your mother’s accident.””
The street went silent.
“Accident?””
I looked at Daniel.
“You told me she died in a car accident.””
He looked away.
“I thought that’s what you were told.””
My face tightened.
“You thought?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know the entire truth.””
“But you knew there was more.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Because it came too late.
I looked back at Megan.
“What did Sarah find?””
Megan’s hands shook.
“She found evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
She didn’t answer.
“Megan.””
Her eyes met mine.
“She believed someone close to your mother was involved.””
The words made my stomach twist.
Someone close.
A friend.
A family member.
Someone trusted.
“Who?””
Megan looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice lowered.
“You have spent twelve years protecting someone.””
Megan’s expression changed.
For a second, I thought she might finally tell me.
Then she looked at Daniel.
And I understood.
She wasn’t protecting a stranger.
She was protecting someone in this circle.
“Who is it?””
Nobody answered.
Then David spoke through the phone.
“Emma.””
Everyone looked at the device.
“I think I should explain.””
I put the phone closer.
“Please.””
David sighed.
“Your mother hired me to take photographs.””
“Of what?””
“Documents.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was afraid someone was watching her.””
The cold feeling returned.
“Why would my mother think that?””
“Because she discovered financial records that didn’t make sense.””
Daniel looked down.
Megan closed her eyes.
David continued.
“She contacted Sarah because Sarah was helping her organize the information.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Your sister?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
“I knew Sarah was helping someone.””
“Not who?””
He hesitated.
“I knew it was your mother.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew my mother trusted your sister.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Sarah was investigating something.””
“Yes.””
“And you still never told me?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He whispered:
“Of losing you.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to call hiding my mother’s truth love.””
He looked away.
The words hurt him.
But they needed to.
Megan suddenly spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at her.
Ryan’s face hardened.
“Of course there is.””
She ignored him.
“Sarah didn’t just find evidence.””
I waited.
“She found a person.””
My heartbeat slowed.
“What person?””
Megan looked at me.
“The person your mother believed was responsible.””
The street felt impossibly quiet.
“Who?””
Megan’s eyes moved toward Daniel.
And my heart stopped.
“No.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I backed away.
Because I knew that look.
I knew what it meant.
“You’re saying Daniel was involved?””
“No,” Megan said quickly.
“Then why did you look at him?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Because Sarah came to me that night.””
“What night?””
“The night before our wedding.””
My hands went cold.
“She came to tell me what she discovered.””
“What did she discover?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“She believed someone was using my family’s company to hide money.””
I stared.
“And?””
“And she thought the person responsible might hurt your mother if the truth came out.””
I looked at Megan.
“Why didn’t my mother tell me?””
Daniel’s eyes lowered.
“Because she wanted to protect you.””
That sentence destroyed me.
Because it sounded exactly like what everyone had been saying.
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
Everyone had protected me from the truth.
Nobody had asked whether I wanted to know.
My phone buzzed.
A message from David.
This time, there was no photograph.
Only text.
*Emma, there is one thing you need to know before you confront the person responsible.*
My fingers trembled.
I read the next line.
*Your mother left a message for you the night she died.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Daniel’s face went white.
Megan whispered:
“She wasn’t supposed to find that.””
I stared at her.
“Find what?””
Megan didn’t answer.
Then David sent one final message.
A location.
A place I recognized immediately.
My childhood home.
May you like
And beneath it were seven words that made my entire body freeze.
*The message is still inside the wall.*
