Chapter 4: The Night Before I Said “I Do”

For a moment, nobody moved.

The photograph sat on my phone screen like a crack in reality.

I stared at it, waiting for my eyes to make sense of what they were seeing.

But they didn’t.

Because there was no misunderstanding.

No innocent explanation.

No angle that could make the image look different.

The date was clear.

The location was clear.

The night before my wedding.

And standing inside that hotel room was Megan.

Beside her was Daniel.

My husband.

The man I was supposed to marry less than twenty-four hours later.

My fingers went numb.

I looked at Daniel.

He wasn’t looking at the photograph anymore.

He was looking at the ground.

That was when my heart sank.

Because shock would have been easier to understand.

Confusion.

Anger.

Even disbelief.

But guilt?

Guilt meant he remembered.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

The silence was louder than anything anyone could have said.

Ryan stepped closer.

“What is going on?””

Nobody responded.

His eyes moved between Megan and Daniel.

Then he looked at the phone in my hand.

“Is that…”

His voice cracked.

“Is that my wife?””

Megan immediately stepped forward.

“Ryan, it’s not what you think.””

The sentence came out automatically.

Almost rehearsed.

Ryan laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You know what’s funny?””

Nobody spoke.

“You’ve used that sentence every time.””

Megan’s face tightened.

“Don’t do this here.””

“Here?””

Ryan looked around.

“In front of everyone?””

He pointed toward the restaurant.

“You’re worried about where this happens?””

His voice rose.

“I’ve spent years wondering if I was imagining things.””

Megan looked away.

“And now I’m standing here looking at proof.””

I looked back at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“Do not say my name like that.””

His face fell.

I held up the phone.

“Tell me what happened.””

Daniel looked at Megan.

That tiny movement destroyed something inside me.

Because even then, after everything, he was still protecting her.

Or maybe protecting himself.

“I’m waiting.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“It wasn’t what it looks like.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Of course.””

I looked at Megan.

“Did you teach him that line?””

She looked angry.

“I didn’t do anything wrong.””

I stared at her.

“You’re standing in a hotel room with my fiancé the night before my wedding.””

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because there was no way to make that sound normal.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, please listen.””

“Were you there?””

“Yes.””

“Were you alone with her?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell me?””

His silence answered.

I nodded slowly.

“Right.””

Daniel looked devastated.

But I couldn’t tell if it was because he had hurt me or because the truth was finally exposed.

“Why?””

The question came out quieter.

That made it worse.

“Why were you there?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I stared at him.

“A mistake is forgetting to pick up groceries.””

My voice shook.

“A mistake is missing an appointment.””

I looked at the photograph.

“This is a choice.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“She called me.””

Megan immediately turned.

“Daniel.””

But he continued.

“She said she needed to talk.””

I looked at Megan.

“About what?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“She said she was worried about you.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s what she told you?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed her?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew how weak that sounded.

I had spent years defending Daniel’s kindness.

His ability to see the good in people.

But sometimes kindness without boundaries becomes a way to hurt the person closest to you.

“What happened in that room?””

Daniel looked at the ground.

“Nothing.””

Nobody believed him.

Not even him.

I shook my head.

“Then why was she wearing your jacket?””

His eyes widened slightly.

He didn’t answer.

Ryan looked at Megan.

“Your jacket?””

Megan’s face turned pale.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Answer the question.””

She looked around.

For once, she had no audience she could charm.

No joke to hide behind.

No excuse that sounded believable.

“She was cold,” Daniel said.

I turned toward him.

“You gave her your jacket?””

“She was upset.””

“And you thought the appropriate thing was to go to a hotel room with her?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt more than an excuse.

Because it meant there was no explanation.

Only a decision.

Megan suddenly grabbed her phone.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“You’re all acting like I committed some crime.””

Ryan stared at her.

“You don’t see it?””

“See what?””

“That you’re the only person here who doesn’t understand why this looks wrong.””

Megan’s expression hardened.

“I was there for Emma.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t.””

She turned toward me.

“I was trying to help you.””

“By going to a hotel with my fiancé?””

Her lips pressed together.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked away.

Again.

Always away.

Always almost confessing.

Never enough.

My phone buzzed.

Another message from David.

This time, there was a short note attached.

*There’s another photo. The one before this explains why I called.*

My stomach tightened.

I opened the next image.

The second photograph loaded.

And this one was worse.

Because it wasn’t taken from across the room.

It was a close-up.

Megan was holding Daniel’s face.

Her hand was on his cheek.

And his hand was around her waist.

My breath caught.

Ryan covered his mouth.

Olivia whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Daniel immediately spoke.

“That’s not what happened.””

I looked at him.

“Then what happened?””

He had no answer.

The photograph said enough.

Megan stepped forward.

“Emma, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“You have five seconds.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You have five seconds to tell me the truth before I decide you never cared about me.””

She stared at me.

The confident Megan disappeared.

The woman in front of me looked almost afraid.

“I…”

She stopped.

Five seconds passed.

Nothing.

I nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

I turned away.

“Emma, wait.””

I kept walking.

“Please.””

I stopped.

But I didn’t turn around.

Because some part of me still wanted her to say something.

Anything.

Something that could save twelve years of friendship.

Then Megan said quietly:

“You don’t understand what happened after that picture was taken.””

I slowly turned.

“What happened?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And for the first time, I couldn’t tell if they were real.

“Daniel left.””

I looked at him.

“He left?””

Megan nodded.

“And I hated him for it.””

The words confused me.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

“You promised you would talk to her.””

Daniel’s face changed.

My heart started racing.

“Talk to who?””

Nobody answered.

“Megan.””

She looked at me.

And then she said something that changed the entire story.

“Your mother.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

My mother had died six years before.

She had nothing to do with this.

Nothing.

“What does my mother have to do with anything?””

Megan wiped her eyes.

“Everything.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Stop.””

I turned toward him.

“Why did you say that?””

He didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I realized something.

The photograph wasn’t the whole secret.

It was only the beginning.

Megan took a step closer.

“Emma…”

I backed away.

“No.””

Because I already knew.

Whatever happened that night wasn’t just about betrayal.

It was about something everyone had decided to hide from me.

For twelve years.

My phone buzzed again.

A new message.

This time from David.

Only four words appeared on the screen.

*Ask Daniel about Sarah.*

I looked up.

“Who is Sarah?””

Daniel’s face went completely white.

And Megan whispered:

May you like

“Oh no.””

Because apparently, Sarah was a name they both hoped I would never hear.
