Chapter 5: The Name Everyone Tried to Bury

“Who is Sarah?””

The question left my mouth quietly.

Almost too quietly.

But the reaction it created was anything but quiet.

Daniel froze.

Megan stopped breathing for a second.

Ryan looked between them, confused.

And that was when I knew.

Sarah wasn’t just a random name.

Sarah was a secret.

A secret everyone in front of me seemed to know except me.

I looked at Daniel.

“Answer me.””

He swallowed.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m done with people saying my name like it’s supposed to calm me down.””

The restaurant behind us had gone almost completely silent.

People weren’t pretending anymore.

They were watching.

Listening.

Waiting.

And honestly?

I didn’t care.

For years, I had protected everyone’s feelings.

I had chosen peace over confrontation.

I had swallowed questions because I trusted the people around me.

But tonight had shown me something.

Silence didn’t protect relationships.

Sometimes silence protected the people hurting you.

“Who is Sarah?”” I asked again.

Daniel looked at Megan.

That was enough.

I laughed bitterly.

“You still need permission from her?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

“Then talk.””

Daniel stepped back.

“I don’t know where to start.””

“The truth usually works.””

He looked down.

“Sarah was someone I knew before you.””

I waited.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

The word came out slowly.

“She was important to me.””

My stomach tightened.

“How important?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that pause felt like a knife.

Megan suddenly spoke.

“She was his sister.””

Everything stopped.

I blinked.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Megan.

“Why would you say that?””

“Because she deserves to know.””

Her voice was different.

Not defensive.

Not mocking.

Almost angry.

Angry at him.

I looked at Daniel.

“Your sister?””

He nodded.

“My half-sister.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did David tell me to ask about her?””

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew.

Because there was something else.

“What happened to Sarah?””

Nobody answered.

My heart started beating faster.

“Daniel.””

His eyes became glassy.

“She died.””

The words hit me.

I wasn’t expecting that.

I had prepared myself for betrayal.

For cheating.

For some terrible secret.

But not that.

“When?””

He looked at the ground.

“Two years before I met you.””

I took a slow breath.

“And what does that have to do with my wedding?””

Daniel’s silence returned.

That silence was becoming the most painful answer.

Megan crossed her arms.

“Tell her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Megan laughed.

“After tonight? After everything you let happen?””

Ryan stepped closer.

“Someone please explain what’s going on.””

Nobody listened.

Because the three people who mattered were trapped in a conversation that had been waiting twelve years.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Sarah was supposed to be at our wedding.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“She wanted to come.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she wasn’t alive.””

I stared at him.

“I don’t understand.””

He rubbed his eyes.

“Emma, before I met you, Sarah and I were close. She was the only family member I had who really understood me.””

His voice softened.

“She was the person who pushed me to be better.””

I swallowed.

“And?””

“And after she died, I changed.””

That part I understood.

Loss changed people.

But I still didn’t understand why everyone looked terrified.

Then Megan spoke.

“Because Sarah knew something.””

Daniel immediately turned.

“Stop.””

“What did she know?”” I asked.

Megan looked at him.

“You never told her, did you?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Emma…”

I felt my hands shaking.

“Tell me.””

Daniel stayed silent.

Megan answered for him.

“Sarah knew about your mother.””

The world seemed to tilt.

My mother.

Again.

Why was my mother connected to everything?

“My mother died six years ago.””

“I know,” Megan said softly.

“Then why are you saying her name like she’s part of this?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, there are things about our families that you don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“Apparently there are a lot of things I don’t know.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

I looked at Megan.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew something about my mother?””

Her silence was enough.

A strange calm came over me.

Not peace.

Something else.

The kind of calm you feel when you stop hoping someone will tell the truth voluntarily.

“Tell me everything.””

Megan looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slightly.

But this time, I saw something.

Fear.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of what I would discover.

Megan took a deep breath.

“Your mother and Sarah were connected.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

“Your mother helped Sarah before she died.””

I frowned.

“Helped her with what?””

No answer.

“Stop doing that.””

My voice rose.

“Stop giving me pieces and expecting me to be grateful.””

The restaurant door opened.

David’s voice came through my phone.

“Emma?””

Everyone looked at the device.

I had forgotten he was still there.

“David,” I said.

“You know about Sarah?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because I photographed her.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Megan whispered:

“No.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Photographed her doing what?””

David sighed.

“The night before your wedding.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

“There were two photographs.””

My eyes moved to the phone.

“One of Megan and Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“And the second?””

David hesitated.

“The second one showed why Sarah wanted to speak with your mother.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

David continued.

“Emma, I didn’t contact you because of Megan sitting on Daniel’s lap tonight.””

The street went silent.

“I contacted you because seeing Megan again reminded me of something I should have told you years ago.””

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“Your wedding wasn’t almost ruined because of an affair.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because the night before you got married, Sarah discovered something.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

David took a breath.

“She discovered that someone had been hiding the truth about your family.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Megan.

“What truth?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“Emma…”

I turned toward him.

“What?””

His face was full of regret.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

My stomach dropped.

“Find out what?””

He looked at me.

And then he said the words that made my entire past feel like a lie.

“Your mother didn’t die naturally.””

I couldn’t move.

The streetlights blurred.

The sounds around me disappeared.

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No, you don’t get to say sorry.””

My voice shook.

“You knew something about my mother?””

“Yes.””

“For twelve years?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“And you married me anyway?””

He looked broken.

“I loved you.””

I laughed.

A painful, empty sound.

“People keep saying that like love excuses everything.””

Megan looked away.

Ryan stared at his wife like he was seeing a stranger.

Olivia whispered:

“Emma…”

But I couldn’t hear anyone anymore.

My entire life had just shifted.

The wedding.

The friendship.

The marriage.

The memories.

Everything I thought I understood suddenly had another version.

A hidden version.

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you know about my mother’s death?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

And that was when my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

From David.

A photograph attachment.

The final image from that night.

I opened it.

And this time, I didn’t see Megan.

I didn’t see Daniel.

I saw my mother.

Standing outside the same hotel.

Talking to Sarah.

And in the background…

standing behind them…

was someone I recognized immediately.

May you like

Someone who had spent twelve years telling me she was my best friend.

Megan.
