Chapter 9: The Last Card Mercedes Played

Mercedes invited me to meet her three days later.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But something told me I needed to hear whatever she had to say.

We met in a quiet hotel lounge.

She looked different.

Older.

Less powerful.

For the first time, she wasn’t performing.

“Clara,” she said.

I sat across from her.

“What do you want?””

She looked down at her coffee.

“I owe you an explanation.””

I almost smiled.

“An explanation?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

Mercedes took a deep breath.

“I knew Javier had problems.””

I said nothing.

“I knew about the money.””

My hands tightened.

“But I never thought he would hurt you.””

I looked at her.

“He threw wine in my face.””

Her eyes lowered.

“I know.””

“Then you know exactly what he is capable of.””

She looked away.

The silence was an admission.

After a moment, she opened her handbag.

She removed an envelope.

“I found this last year.””

I took it.

Inside was a document.

A marriage agreement.

But not ours.

Another one.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then I stopped.

Javier’s name.

Another woman’s name.

A date.

Before our wedding.

“He was married before,” Mercedes whispered.

I looked up.

“What?””

“He hid it.””

My hands shook.

“How?””

“Money. Lawyers. Connections.””

I stared at the document.

Suddenly, every strange moment in our marriage made sense.

His fear of paperwork.

His obsession with controlling finances.

His anger whenever I asked questions.

Mercedes looked at me.

“I protected him because he was my son.””

I closed the envelope.

“And I protected him because I was his wife.””

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Mercedes and I shared something.

Not friendship.

Not forgiveness.

The same painful realization.

We had both loved a man who used that love against us.

When I left the hotel, my phone rang.

It was Elena.

“Clara, you need to come to the police station.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“They found something connected to Javier’s first marriage.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Her voice became quieter.

“A hidden file.””

I arrived twenty minutes later.

An officer placed the file on the table.

“Mrs. Morales, we need you to understand something.””

I opened it.

“What?””

The officer looked serious.

“Your husband’s previous marriage did not end normally.””

I turned the first page.

And saw a photograph.

The woman beside Javier looked terrified.

Underneath it was a report.

And one sentence highlighted in yellow.

*Victim reported repeated financial and emotional abuse.*

I looked at the officer.

“Why are you showing me this?””

He hesitated.

May you like

Then answered.

“Because there is evidence suggesting you were not his first victim.””
