Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Everything

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

The woman beside Javier was not a stranger.

That was the worst part.

Her name was Sofia.

I knew her.

Not well.

But enough.

She had attended company events with Javier. She had smiled at me. She had complimented my dress. She had once told me I was “lucky to have such a devoted husband.””

The memory made my stomach twist.

I called the number.

A woman answered after one ring.

“Clara?””

Her voice was quiet.

“Yes. Who is this?””

A pause.

“My name is Elena.””

I sat down slowly.

“Why did you send me that?””

“Because you needed to know.””

“Know what?””

Elena took a breath.

“That Javier has been lying to you for years.””

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to deny it.

I wanted to say she was wrong.

But a small part of me had already known.

“How long?””

“Almost three years.””

The room felt suddenly colder.

Three years.

Half of my marriage.

Half of my life with him.

“Elena, why are you telling me this now?””

“Because tonight was not the first time Javier hurt someone.””

Her words made me sit straighter.

“What do you mean?””

She explained.

Javier had a pattern.

He convinced people he was charming.

He borrowed money.

He made promises.

Then when someone questioned him, he became cruel.

The complaint mentioned at the restaurant was connected to a former business partner.

A man who claimed Javier had manipulated him into signing documents that caused financial damage.

I remembered all the times Javier came home angry.

All the times he blamed everyone else.

His boss.

His clients.

His friends.

Never himself.

“What does Mercedes know?”” I asked.

Elena went silent.

That silence answered before her words did.

“She knows everything.””

The next morning, I met Elena at a quiet café.

I almost didn’t recognize her.

The confident woman from company parties looked exhausted.

She placed a folder on the table.

“These are copies.””

I opened it.

Inside were bank records.

Messages.

Documents.

Proof.

Javier had been moving money between accounts.

Including accounts connected to our household.

I looked up.

“Why would he do this?””

Elena gave a sad smile.

“Because he believed nobody would stop him.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

I had spent years protecting him from consequences.

Every apology.

Every excuse.

Every time I told myself tomorrow would be different.

I had helped create a world where Javier believed he could do anything.

My phone rang.

It was Javier.

I looked at the screen.

Then answered.

“Clara,” he said immediately.

“We need to talk.””

“No.””

A pause.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand more than I did yesterday.””

His voice changed.

“Who have you been talking to?””

I looked at Elena.

Then back at the phone.

“That’s what you’re worried about?””

“Clara, listen to me.””

“No. You listen.””

For once, I interrupted him.

“You thought I would always forgive you.””

Silence.

Then his voice became colder.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I smiled sadly.

“No, Javier.””

I looked at the folder in front of me.

“For the first time, I’m correcting one.””

After I hung up, Elena looked toward the window.

Her expression suddenly changed.

“What is it?””

She pointed outside.

A black car had stopped across the street.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching us.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Javier.

*You should have never trusted her.*

May you like

And beneath it was another message.

*Because she is the reason I knew exactly where you would be today.*
