Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Smile
The first thing I did was look at Elena.
The second thing I did was leave the café.
Not because I believed Javier.
Because I understood him.
He wanted me afraid.
He wanted me questioning everyone around me.
That had always been his greatest weapon.
Confusion.
Doubt.
Isolation.
Outside, the cold Madrid air hit my face.
Elena followed.
“Clara, wait.””
I stopped.
“Is he telling the truth?””
Her expression broke.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too painfully.
She looked down.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I studied her face.
“Afraid of Javier?””
She nodded.
Then she said something I never expected.
“Afraid of Mercedes.””
That name changed everything.
Because until that moment, I had believed Mercedes was simply cruel.
A controlling mother.
A woman obsessed with status.
But Elena revealed something darker.
Mercedes had spent years protecting Javier.
Cleaning up his mistakes.
Pressuring people into silence.
Making problems disappear.
“She taught him that apologies were enough,” Elena said.
I thought about every time Javier hurt me.
Every time Mercedes defended him.
Every time she told me marriage required patience.
Suddenly, all those moments looked different.
“She wanted me gone,” I whispered.
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
The truth hurt.
But it also freed me.
That evening, I returned home and found the apartment door unlocked.
My heart raced.
I stepped inside carefully.
“Javier?””
No answer.
The living room was dark.
Then I saw him.
Standing beside the table.
Waiting.
“You’re becoming someone I don’t recognize,” he said.
I almost laughed.
“That’s interesting.””
He frowned.
“Because I feel the same way about you.””
I placed my handbag down.
“No. You miss the woman who tolerated everything.””
His face hardened.
“You think you’re powerful now?””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“I think I finally stopped being afraid.””
He walked closer.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
He smiled bitterly.
“You think those papers prove something?””
I froze slightly.
“What papers?””
His expression changed.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
He knew.
He knew about the documents.
“How did you know?””
He ignored the question.
“Give me your phone.””
“No.””
“Clara.””
“No.””
The silence between us became something physical.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his expression changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
He answered.
“Hello?””
He listened.
Then whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I watched him carefully.
After a few seconds, he ended the call.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
And for the first time, Javier Rivas looked defeated.
“They found the account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What account?””
He said nothing.
Then his phone buzzed again.
A message appeared.
I could see only a few words.
*Investigation confirmed. Financial records attached.*
Javier looked up.
And I knew.
The truth was finally catching up.
May you like
But I still didn’t know the biggest secret.
The one Mercedes had protected for years.
