Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Complaint

The name on the officer’s paper changed everything.

Not because Javier was suddenly afraid of the police.

Javier Rivas had spent his entire adult life believing rules were things that happened to other people.

But when the officer mentioned another complaint, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

The restaurant was still buzzing with whispers. Guests who had been pretending not to watch were now openly staring. Mercedes sat frozen in her chair, her expensive jewelry catching the golden restaurant lights as if nothing unusual was happening.

But everything had changed.

“Another complaint?”” Javier repeated.

The officer folded the paper.

“Yes. We need to ask you some questions.””

Javier laughed nervously.

“I think there must be some mistake.””

I watched him carefully.

That sentence.

Always that sentence.

There must be some mistake.

It was the phrase he used whenever reality stopped going his way.

The officer looked at me briefly.

“Mrs. Rivas, are you aware of any other incidents involving your husband?””

For a moment, I said nothing.

Because suddenly, memories I had buried began returning.

The late-night phone calls he refused to explain.

The secret meetings.

The missing money.

The women who looked away whenever I entered a room.

I had spent years convincing myself I was imagining things.

Maybe I was wrong.

Maybe I was too suspicious.

Maybe I was the problem.

But standing there, watching Javier panic, I realized something.

My instincts had been warning me for years.

I just refused to listen.

“I don’t know,” I finally answered.

Javier immediately turned toward me.

“Clara.””

The way he said my name was not loving.

It was a warning.

I ignored him.

The officer nodded.

“Alright. We’ll need your statement later.””

Javier stepped closer.

“Can we please talk like adults?””

I looked at him.

“Adults don’t throw drinks at their spouses.””

His jaw tightened.

Mercedes stood suddenly.

“This has gone far enough.””

The restaurant manager looked at her.

“Ma’am, your party needs to cooperate.””

She stared at him as if she could not believe someone had spoken to her that way.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Do you know who my family is?””

The manager’s expression remained unchanged.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And tonight, everyone knows what happened here.””

That was the first time I saw Mercedes lose control.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Panic.

Because Mercedes understood something Javier did not.

The world had witnessed their behavior.

They could not rewrite the story.

Not this time.

Later that night, after giving my statement, I sat alone in my apartment.

The dress I wore was hanging in the bathroom.

The red stain remained.

I could have thrown it away.

Instead, I left it there.

A reminder.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Javier.

*You ruined everything tonight.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*You have no idea what you’ve done.*

For years, those words would have frightened me.

That night, they only made me curious.

I typed one question.

*What exactly did I ruin, Javier?*

The reply came almost immediately.

But it wasn’t from him.

It was from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

My heart stopped.

It was Javier.

Standing outside a hotel.

With a woman I recognized.

May you like

And underneath the picture was one sentence.

*You deserve to know what your husband has been hiding.*
