Chapter 9

Harrison arrived within ten minutes.

He listened to everything I said.

Every word.

Every threat.

Every detail.

When I finished, he stood silent for a long time.

“The boathouse,” he said. “On the lake. That’s the property Richard listed as a ‘vacation retreat’ years ago. He never let anyone visit. Not even family.”

“He’s been hiding there the whole time,” I said. “Never left the country. Just faked the crash and went home.”

Harrison’s jaw tightened.

“Smart. Arrogant. He knew we’d look overseas. Never dreamed he’d be sitting twenty miles away.”

He turned to me, his voice urgent.

“Khloe, this is a trap. You don’t go there. We call the FBI. We surround the place. We take him alive.”

“And if he sees cars coming?” I said. “If he panics? If he has Vanessa… or worse?”

“Worse?”

“Vanessa is pregnant,” I said. “And she’s terrified of him. If we storm in, he might hurt her. Or himself. Or burn the evidence. We need him to believe I’m coming alone. That I’m scared. That I’m handing over everything.”

Harrison shook his head.

“No. Too dangerous. He won’t let you walk away.”

“Exactly,” I said. “Which is why you’ll be waiting. Hidden. Close enough to hear everything. Close enough to move in the second you see him. But not close enough to scare him before he tells us everything.”

Harrison stared at me.

Saw the resolve in my face.

Reluctantly, he nodded.

“Forty minutes before midnight. We get into position. You go in. You stall him. You make him talk. You make him believe he’s won. And when he shows his hand… we take him.”

That night, I drove to the lake alone.

The files sat on the passenger seat.

Copies.

Not originals.

I would never give Richard the originals.

Darkness covered the water.

The boathouse stood at the end of a narrow wooden pier.

Dim light glowed through cracks in the siding.

Someone was waiting.

I stepped out of the car.

Walked slowly toward the building.

My heart hammered.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

I reached the door.

Paused.

Pushed it open.

Richard stood inside.

Leaning against an old wooden desk.

Gun in hand.

Vanessa sat on a chair nearby.

Her face pale.

Her hands folded tightly in her lap.

Richard looked exactly the same.

Immaculate.

Confident.

As if nothing had changed.

As if he hadn’t faked his own death.

As if he hadn’t tried to kill me.

“Hello, Khloe,” he said, his voice smooth. “You’re late.”

I walked in slowly.

Set the files on the table.

“Here,” I said. “Everything. Just like you asked.”

Richard didn’t look at the files.

He looked at me.

His eyes traveled down to my belly.

“Eight months,” he said. “Almost there. A boy, I think. Strong. Like his father.”

“It’s a girl,” I said.

Richard smiled.

“Whatever she is… she’s mine. And so are you. And so is everything Harrison thinks he stole from me.”

He stepped closer.

The gun never wavered.

“You think you won,” he said. “You think Caroline’s little files destroyed me. But I know what I have. And I know what you’re afraid of.”

“Caroline wasn’t afraid of you,” I said. “That’s why you killed her.”

Richard’s smile faded.

“Caroline was greedy. Just like you. She forgot who owned everything. Who made everything possible.”

He gestured to Vanessa.

“Vanessa understands. She knows her place. She knows what she gets in return.”

Vanessa flinched.

Said nothing.

I looked at her.

Saw the fear in her eyes.

Saw the way she shrank away from him.

“She knows you’ll kill her too,” I said to Richard. “Just like you planned. Once her baby is born. Once she’s no longer useful.”

Richard laughed.

A cold, sharp sound.

“Is that what she told you? Or is that what you’re hoping?”

He turned to Vanessa.

“Tell her, Vanessa. Tell her we’re happy. Tell her everything is exactly as we planned.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

She looked at me.

Then at Richard.

And then she said, voice trembling, “He said… he said I’d be the only one. That you’d be gone. That Caroline never existed.”

Richard’s expression darkened.

“Vanessa…”

“He lied to you too,” I said. “He told Caroline the exact same things. He told me the exact same things. Until we became inconvenient.”

Richard raised the gun.

“Enough.”

He turned back to me.

“Sign the papers. Everything transfers back to me. You walk away. You keep the baby. Harrison stays out of my business. And I don’t have to hurt anyone.”

“And if I don’t sign?” I said.

Richard cocked the gun.

“Then Vanessa testifies against you. Claims you falsified everything. Claims Harrison forced you. Claims you’re unstable. And then… there’s another accident. Just like the courthouse. Just like Caroline’s boat. And everyone will say it was a tragedy. Just like before.”

He smiled.

“Sign, Khloe. Or you and your baby join Caroline.”

I stood perfectly still.

Hand inside my pocket.

Pressed the button on the emergency beacon Harrison had given me.

“Vanessa,” I said, not looking away from Richard. “He will kill you tonight. Right here. Right after I sign. He never intended to share anything. He needed you to deliver the message. And now you’re a witness. Just like Caroline.”

Richard’s eyes widened.

“Shut up.”

“Look at him, Vanessa,” I said. “Look at his face. He’s already decided. He’s holding the gun. He’s ready. You die with me. And he tells everyone we ran away together. That we were guilty. That we destroyed ourselves out of shame.”

Vanessa stood up.

“Richard… is that true?”

Richard ignored her.

He stepped toward me.

“Sign. Now.”

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Tell me it’s not true!” she screamed.

Richard shoved her aside.

Hard.

She hit the wall and slid to the floor.

“Get out of my way,” he snapped.

He turned back to me.

Raised the gun.

“I’m not going to ask again.”

The door burst open.

Harrison and three FBI agents rushed in.

“DROP THE WEAPON!”

Richard froze.

His eyes darted wildly.

Escape.

Fight.

Panic.

He turned the gun toward me.

I dove aside.

A shot rang out.

Not from Richard.

From the doorway.

Richard staggered back.

Clutched his shoulder.

The gun clattered to the floor.

Agents swarmed him.

Cuffed him.

Pulled him to his feet.

Richard screamed as they dragged him past me.

“This isn’t over! You haven’t won! I will destroy you!”

Harrison rushed to me.

Checked me over.

“You’re okay?”

“I’m okay,” I said, breathless.

We turned to Vanessa.

She sat on the floor, sobbing.

Covering her face.

Harrison helped her up.

“You’re safe now,” he said gently. “He’s in custody. He can’t hurt you.”

Vanessa looked up.

Her face streaked with tears.

“I helped him,” she whispered. “I helped him hurt you. I helped him hurt Caroline.”

“Then help us make it right,” Harrison said.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

She looked at me.

Humbled.

May you like

Broken.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “He told me so many lies. And I believed every single one.”
