Chapter 10

Richard was taken to the federal detention center.
Charges were filed within hours.
Fraud.
Embezzlement.
Conspiracy.
Tampering with evidence.
Faking his own death.
And pending further investigation… Caroline’s murder.
Vanessa agreed to cooperate fully.
She turned over everything.
Messages.
Emails.
Recorded conversations.
Financial ledgers.
Everything.
She testified before a grand jury.
She told them about the threats.
The planning.
The way Richard had manipulated her from the very beginning.
“He told me Khloe was dangerous,” she told Harrison later, in a safe room. “That she was unstable. That she was going to hurt the baby. I believed him. I wanted to believe him. Because the alternative was… realizing I was helping a monster.”
Harrison looked at her carefully.
“Did he tell you what happened to Caroline?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“He said she had an accident. But… once, I walked in while he was on the phone. He didn’t know I was there. He said… ‘She’s at the bottom of the lake. No one will ever find her.’”
My blood ran cold.
“Here?” I said. “At this lake?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He said he’d buried her where no one would ever look. Beneath the boathouse foundation. ‘Bury the truth deep enough… and it stays buried forever.’ Those were his exact words.”
Harrison stood up immediately.
He called the FBI dive team.
He called forensic investigators.
By sunrise, the boathouse was surrounded.
Cameras rolled.
Evidence markers went up.
And by mid-afternoon…
Divers and excavation crews found something.
Buried beneath concrete and stone, deep beneath the floor.
Human remains.
And a wedding ring.
Engraved inside.
Caroline — Forever Yours.
They found her.
After three years.
Richard had buried her where he brought his next victims.
Where he thought nothing would ever be found.
I stood on the pier as they carried her out.
Harrison stood beside me.
His arm around my shoulders.
“She can rest now,” he said quietly. “And so can you.”
The discovery changed everything.
Richard was charged with first-degree murder.
No bail.
No possibility of release.
He would spend the rest of his life in a cell.
Or face lethal injection.
Vanessa was given immunity in exchange for her testimony.
She entered a witness protection program.
Left everything behind.
Her name.
Her life.
Her past.
She came to see me once before she disappeared.
Sat across from me in the safe house.
Her hands resting on her own stomach.
“I’m having a girl,” she said quietly. “I only just found out.”
I said nothing.
“I’m going to name her Caroline,” she said. “To remember. To never forget what happens when you let someone else tell you what the truth is.”
She stood up.
“I’ll never forgive myself,” she said. “But I will spend the rest of my life trying to make up for it.”
May you like
She walked out.
And I never saw her again.
