Chapter 15

Five years later.

Sunlight filled the garden.

Elara ran ahead of me.

Chasing butterflies.

Laughing.

Harrison sat on the porch, watching her.

Grayer now.

Slower.

But still strong.

Still protective.

I walked over and sat beside him.

Handing him a glass of lemonade.

“Thinking?” I said.

“About how far we’ve come,” he said. “About how much we survived.”

Elara ran back.

Her little face flushed.

Her hair wild.

“Grandpa! Come play with me!”

Harrison laughed.

Stood up.

“On my way, little one.”

He took her hand.

Together they ran toward the oak tree at the far end of the yard.

I watched them.

My heart full.

Beyond words.

Caroline had been buried here.

In this garden.

Under a stone bench.

Her name carved into it.

Beloved.

Remembered.

Honored.

Richard’s ashes had arrived three years earlier.

In a small, plain box.

I had taken them to the highest cliff overlooking the ocean.

Scattered them where the wind would carry them away.

No stone.

No name.

No memorial.

Just… gone.

Just as he had asked.

But Elara…

Elara had everything.

Love.

Safety.

Family.

Legacy.

She would never know the fear I knew.

Never know the betrayal.

Never know what it felt like to look at the person you loved most and realize they wanted to destroy you.

She would know only light.

And strength.

And the truth.

When she was old enough…

I would tell her everything.

About Caroline.

About courage.

About choosing family over everything.

And about how even the darkest night ends.

Elara ran back to me.

Threw her arms around my legs.

“Mommy! We’re going to pick flowers!”

I knelt down.

Brushed the hair from her face.

Smiled.

“Be careful, my love. And stay close to Grandpa.”

She nodded.

Ran back to Harrison.

I stood up.

Looked out over the garden.

At the sun.

At the blue sky.

At the life I had built from the ruins.

I had lost so much.

My first love.

My home.

My innocence.

But I had gained so much more.

Myself.

My freedom.

My daughter.

My family.

And peace.

True peace.

I closed my eyes.

Whispered two names.

Caroline.

And Elara.

One gone too soon.

One just beginning.

I opened my eyes.

Harrison and Elara sat beneath the oak tree.

Laughing.

Happy.

Whole.

I walked toward them.

Home.

Finally.

May you like

Truly.

Home.
