Chapter 13

Thirty-seven weeks.

Full term.

Ready.

Harrison had converted the entire second floor of the house into a sanctuary.

Nursery.

Bedroom.

Everything ready.

Doctors on call.

Security everywhere.

I walked through the house one afternoon.

Touching things.

Feeling calm.

For the first time in years.

Harrison found me standing by the window.

“Nervous?” he said gently.

“Excited,” I said. “And… relieved. It’s finally happening.”

He stood beside me.

“She’s going to be extraordinary. Just like her mother.”

I looked at him.

“Thank you, Harry. For everything. If you hadn’t been there…”

He put an arm around me.

“We’re family. That’s what family does. We don’t let monsters win. We protect our own. And we rebuild.”

That night, the contractions began.

Slow.

Gentle.

Steady.

Harrison drove me to the hospital.

Quiet entrance.

Private suite.

Trusted medical team.

Twelve hours later…

She arrived.

Early morning.

Sun just rising.

Strong.

Healthy.

Perfect.

My daughter.

I held her in my arms.

Warm.

Soft.

Breathing.

Harrison stood beside the bed.

His eyes wet.

“Beautiful,” he whispered.

I looked at her face.

Her eyes.

So much like mine.

So much like Caroline’s.

“Elara,” I said. “Her name is Elara.”

Harrison smiled.

“Elara. Light. Bright. Perfect.”

He touched her tiny hand.

“She has no idea what she was saved from. But she will know what she was saved for. Love. Safety. Family.”

Three days later, we brought Elara home.

Harrison carried her in.

Laid her in the crib.

Stood there watching her for a long time.

Then he turned to me.

“Rest. Both of you. I’ll handle everything else. The world can wait.”

For weeks, I did nothing but hold her.

Watch her sleep.

Count her fingers.

Memorize every sound she made.

She was my miracle.

My reward.

My justice.

Richard was in prison.

Caroline was laid to rest properly.

Vanessa was building a new life.

And I…

I was free.

One afternoon, Harrison brought me a thick envelope.

From the district attorney’s office.

“Final report,” he said. “Everything closed. All charges filed. All assets recovered. All accounts unfrozen. Every penny Richard stole… is yours again.”

I opened it.

Saw the numbers.

Saw the signatures.

Saw the words: CASE CLOSED.

I handed it back to him.

“Keep it,” I said. “Put it somewhere safe. Elara will need it one day. Along with Caroline’s letter. And the video. And everything else.”

Harrison nodded.

“I will lock it all away. And when she is old enough… you will decide what to tell her. And when.”

I looked at Elara sleeping peacefully in her bassinet.

“I will tell her about Caroline,” I said. “About her courage. About what she tried to do. And I will tell her about you. About family. And about never giving up.”

“And him?” Harrison said quietly.

I looked at the window.

At the blue sky.

At the light filling the room.

“I will tell her that her father made choices,” I said. “Terrible, tragic choices. And that he paid for them. But I will also tell her… that in the end… he chose to disappear. So she could be free.”

Harrison put his hand on my shoulder.

May you like

“That is generous of you.”

“That is the truth,” I said. “And Elara deserves the truth. All of it. In time.”
