Chapter 1

She shoved me backward with both hands.

Hard.

I stumbled, lost my balance, and tumbled down the courthouse steps.

Thirty marble stairs.

Sharp edges.

Cold stone.

My body rolled, twisting and landing hard again and again.

One hand stayed clamped over my swollen belly the whole way down.

I was eight months pregnant.

And I was terrified.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa Kensington stood perfectly still.

Her hands were still raised from the shove.

Her face showed no regret.

No fear.

Only satisfaction.

At the bottom, I lay crumpled against the stone.

Pain exploded through my body.

Warm blood seeped from beneath me, staining the white marble dark.

I tried to breathe.

Couldn't.

Then someone dropped beside me so hard his palms scraped raw against the stone.

Harrison Cole.

My older brother.

My attorney.

The man feared more than any prosecutor or judge across the entire state.

“Khloe…”

His voice broke.

I’d never heard him sound afraid before.

“Look at me. Stay with me. Don’t close your eyes.”

I forced myself to focus on his face.

My trembling fingers clutched his suit jacket, leaving bloody prints across the expensive fabric.

“Harry…” I whispered.

“The baby…”

A sharp, tearing pain tore through me.

“Please… save my baby.”

My hand slipped from his jacket.

Everything started going dark.

Through the haze, I saw him slowly lift his head.

His gaze traveled upward to the top of the steps.

Vanessa had turned ghostly pale.

Beside her stood Richard.

My husband.

The man who had sworn before God to love and protect me.

He stared down at me.

And he did not move a single step.

Harrison did not blink.

His eyes locked onto both of them.

His expression was terrifyingly calm.

That was the moment Vanessa realized prison might not be the worst thing waiting for her.

Because Harrison Cole did not lose control.

He dismantled people.

Carefully.

Methodically.

Completely.

And once he began…

He never stopped.

Six years ago, I walked down the aisle believing I was marrying the love of my life.

Richard Harrington looked like the perfect husband.

Handsome.

Confident.

Wealthy.

CEO of Harrington Commercial Group.

He carried himself like a man who had always gotten exactly what he wanted.

And for a while, I thought I was his greatest prize.

On our honeymoon, he pulled me close and whispered.

“I want a little girl with your eyes.”

I built my whole world around that promise.

Three exhausting IVF cycles.

Two devastating miscarriages.

Countless injections.

Nights spent crying alone on the bathroom floor.

In the beginning, Richard held me.

Later, he watched silently from the doorway.

Eventually, he stopped coming home on appointment days altogether.

Then, at thirty-six, the impossible happened.

Two pink lines appeared on an ordinary drugstore test.

No procedures.

No specialists.

Just a miracle.

I bought a tiny gift box.

Inside, I placed the pregnancy test and a pair of cream-colored baby booties.

I waited excitedly in the kitchen until Richard came home.

When he opened the box…

He did not smile.

He did not hold me.

He just stared at the test like it was a problem he hadn’t planned for.

“That’s… great, Khloe.”

The words sounded rehearsed.

Cold.

Before I could say anything, his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

“I have to take this. It’s Boston.”

And he walked away.

Something shifted after that night.

His phone had a new passcode.

Business trips appeared constantly.

Boston. Miami. New York.

A sharp, floral perfume clung to his clothes.

One I had never worn.

I had worked as an architectural draftsman before we married.

I knew how to spot cracks beneath polished surfaces.

The truth revealed itself on an ordinary Tuesday.

Richard had forgotten to sign out of a cloud account on the family iPad.

Five months pregnant, I sat eating soup when a message popped up.

From: V

“I still can’t stop thinking about last night. Once you get rid of the dead weight, the penthouse nursery will be perfect. Our baby deserves your last name, Ricky.”

My heart stopped.

Trembling, I opened the conversation.

What I found was not just an affair.

It was an entire second life.

Vanessa Kensington.

Thirty years old.

Interior designer for his company.

Together for nearly two years.

Hotel reservations.

Private villa photos.

Cruel jokes about my pregnancy weight.

Mockery of my miscarriages.

And then I found the financial records.

Millions drained from our accounts.

Transferred through shell companies to offshore accounts.

His plan was perfect.

Divorce me before the baby came.

Leave me with the mortgaged mansion and nothing else.

For a long time, I just stared at the screen.

I couldn’t cry.

I couldn’t breathe.

Then I made the smartest decision of my life.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t confront him.

I called one man.

My brother.

“Harrison Cole.”

I tried to speak.

Only a broken sob came out.

“Khloe? Where are you?”

“Home.”

“Did he hurt you?”

I whispered, voice trembling.

“Not yet.”

Two hours later, I sat in Harrison’s Manhattan office.

I showed him everything.

Messages.

Transfers.

Photos.

He said nothing until I finished.

Then he placed the tablet down.

His face was terrifyingly still.

“You are not going back to that house to beg,” he said.

I wrapped my arms around my belly.

“What do I do?”

Harrison looked at me, his eyes hard as steel.

“We take everything from him. Every dollar. Every reputation. Every freedom he thinks he owns. Richard Harrington and that woman have declared war. And I never lose a war.”

Pain flared in my stomach again.

Darkness closed in.

Through the haze, I heard sirens approaching.

Harrison pressed his jacket against my side to stop the bleeding.

“Stay with me, Khloe. Help is coming. I promise you—they will pay for this.”

I looked up one last time.

Richard was still standing there.

Watching.

And I knew.

I had loved a monster.

But his mistake was destroying the sister of Harrison Cole.

And Harrison Cole was about to destroy him.
