Chapter 3

Mr. Harrison called the police with shaking hands.

Vanessa tried to stop him.

“Ryan, we can handle this as a family.”

He looked at her.

“You accused an innocent woman and let me hit her.”

“You chose to hit her.”

The room went silent again.

She had said it quickly.

Coldly.

Like she had been waiting to throw the guilt back at him.

Mr. Harrison’s face went white.

For the first time since he slapped me, he looked at my cheek.

Really looked.

The shame came slowly.

Then all at once.

“Maria,” he whispered.

I stepped back.

“No.”

He stopped.

Good.

I did not want his hand near me.

Not after what he had done.

Caleb stood in front of me again.

He was only nine years old.

Too young to be a shield.

But he did it anyway.

The police arrived fifteen minutes later.

Officer Grant and Officer Lewis.

They took statements separately.

Mr. Harrison showed them the video.

Caleb showed them the saved copy.

Then he showed them something else.

A second clip.

Vanessa standing in the hallway with Derek.

Her voice was low but clear.

“She cleaned the office this morning. Ryan will believe it.”

Derek asked, “What about the cameras?”

Vanessa said, “I’ll delete it.”

Derek laughed.

“Kids know the tablet password?”

Vanessa replied, “They’re upstairs.”

But Caleb had not been upstairs.

He had been hiding in the hall because he wanted to ask his father about a school project.

He saw everything.

He heard enough.

Then he ran to Emma.

Together, they copied the footage to Emma’s tablet before Vanessa could erase it.

My knees felt weak.

Those children had saved me.

Not from losing my job only.

From being branded a thief.

From police handcuffs.

From shame.

From a lie that would follow me everywhere.

Officer Grant turned to Vanessa.

“Ma’am, where is Derek now?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I don’t know.”

Her phone buzzed.

Everyone heard it.

Mr. Harrison looked down.

A message preview appeared on her screen.

Derek:

Did she take the blame yet?

Vanessa reached for the phone.

Officer Lewis moved faster.

May you like

“Do not touch it.”

Vanessa’s face drained of color.
