Chapter 13

I testified on the second day.
The prosecutor asked about my work.
My duties.
My relationship with the children.
Vanessa’s treatment of me.
Then the slap.
My voice shook.
I let it.
“Why did you ask Mr. Harrison to check the cameras?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because I knew I did not steal.”
“Were you afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
I looked at Vanessa.
“Not only police. I was afraid nobody would believe me.”
The courtroom went quiet.
The defense tried to suggest I had financial stress.
I answered honestly.
“Yes. I send money to my mother. That is not theft.”
The defense asked if I had access to the office.
“Yes.”
“To the drawer?”
“No.”
“To the house?”
“Yes.”
“To the family?”
I paused.
Then said, “To the children. Not to the family.”
