Chapter 16

After the trial, Mr. Harrison asked again to meet.

This time, I said yes.

Public place.

Alicia nearby.

He arrived with Caleb and Emma because I allowed it.

Emma ran to me.

I hugged her before I could stop myself.

Caleb stood back, older somehow.

I hugged him too.

Mr. Harrison waited.

Good.

When the children sat with Lucia at another table, he spoke.

“Maria, I am sorry.”

I looked at him.

“You said that.”

“I know. I need to say more.”

He took a breath.

“I treated you like a suspect before I treated you like a person. I let Vanessa’s story fit because it was easier than questioning my wife. Then I hit you. My children saw me do that. You should never have had to stand there and ask for cameras to prove your humanity.”

My eyes filled despite myself.

“That is true.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I cannot work for you again.”

“I know.”

“I do not forgive you yet.”

“I understand.”

“But I want to see the children sometimes.”

His face softened.

“They want that too.”

That was how we began again.

Not employer and maid.

Not family exactly.

May you like

Something careful.

Something with boundaries.
