Chapter 6

Vanessa was arrested that afternoon.
Child endangerment.
Attempted harm.
False accusation.
Evidence tampering.
Assault for hitting me while I held Noah.
Conspiracy investigation pending.
When Detective Lewis told me, I sat down slowly.
I expected relief.
Instead, I felt hollow.
Noah slept in the hospital crib, one fist open against his cheek.
His mother had tried to turn his near-death into a performance.
How do you carry that without breaking?
James answered that later.
“You don’t carry all of it today.”
“Then when?”
“One day at a time. Like evidence.”
That was his courthouse brain.
Annoying.
Useful.
Maria’s nephew came to pick her up after she was discharged.
Before leaving, she came to me with tears in her eyes.
“Sir, I am sorry this happened.”
I stared at her.
“Maria. You saved his life.”
“She will say I did bad things.”
“She can say whatever she wants. The video says different.”
Maria nodded, but fear stayed on her face.
I understood.
Vanessa was wealthy.
White.
Polished.
My wife.
Maria was an immigrant worker with bandaged hands and a wet uniform.
The lie had been built on the assumption that people would believe Vanessa first.
That made me furious in a way I had no language for.
So I called my lawyer.
Karen Holt.
“Protect Maria,” I said before she even greeted me.
Karen paused.
“Good afternoon to you too.”
“Vanessa is going to blame her.”
“Then we protect her with documentation.”
“And Noah.”
“And Noah.”
“And me.”
May you like
“Yes, Ryan. And you.”
I had almost forgotten that part.
