Chapter 13

The trial began in Miami under heavy media attention.
The headline had become famous.
Maid Saves Baby, Mother Accused.
I hated every version.
Noah was not a headline.
Maria was not a role.
Vanessa was not simply “mother.”
She was the defendant.
The prosecutor opened with the stroller video.
The courtroom watched Maria run.
Jump.
Lift Noah.
Then Vanessa arrive and point.
“She did it!”
A few jurors looked visibly sick.
Good.
Then came the silver remote.
The cut camera wire.
The Elise messages.
The second phone.
The voice notes.
Brooke’s testimony.
Mr. Alvarez’s testimony.
Maria’s testimony.
Mine.
When I took the stand, the prosecutor asked, “What was the first thing the defendant said when she saw Noah alive?”
I answered, “She accused Maria.”
“Did she ask whether Noah was okay?”
“No.”

My voice cracked.
“No.”
